Speculation Abounds over
Microsoft-Google Rumors
11/03/2003 07:21 PM
According to published reports, Microsoft has made overtures to Google for a possible acquisition -- overtures that Google apparently declined after some discussions. Neither company would confirm the rumor, leaving industry insiders to speculate on whether it is true, and if so, what it means to the online advertising industry.

Google Typo Leads To Speculation About 1
Terabyte Of Gmail Storage

Google Typo Leads To Speculation About 1
Terabyte Of Gmail Storage
05/19/2004 02:57 AM
Someone submitted a note to Techdirt Tuesday afternoon noting that their Gmail account usage bar at the bottom of the page showed the limit to be 1000000 MB (approximately 1 terabyte) rather than the advertised 1 gigabyte (though, actually that reminds me of an annoying aside: Google keeps claiming 1 gigabyte of storage, but 1 gigabyte is actually 1024 MB and not the 1000 MB they show, which even Google will tell you). I checked my own Gmail account, and indeed, it showed the approaching terabyte level of storage. A quick note to a friend at Google confirmed the obvious: it was a mistake. However, that hasn't stopped rampant speculation to run around the internet - to the point that even News.com(.com) has written an article about it. Also, one juicy rumor about the fix: before they fix this error, they're making sure that no one actually has gone over the gigabyte storage level.

Speculation On iTunes 4.7

Speculation On iTunes 4.7 06/10/2004 08:49 PM
I am "almost certained" that Apple will introduce the ability of streaming music to mulitple AirPort Express. Just some minor modification in iTunes, and add in some sync code between different AirPort Express, and, viola, Apple customers have another reason to buy more AirPort Express.
Of course, I am not the Apple engineer to add in all these codes, so I probably made this a little simplier than it is. Well, maybe iTunes 4.8 then?

McDonald's and iTunes speculation

McDonald's and iTunes speculation 11/07/2003 11:07 AM
The mystery surrounding a possible McDonald's - iTunes Music Store deal continues to deepen. The statement released yesterday by McDonald's stating that "there are no agreements to announce, so anything else is pure speculation," is the type of statement corporations make when they are in negotiations and don't want to to fuel the rumor mill. Since the reported number of one billion songs does seem astonishingly high, it is possible that the fast-food giant and Apple are...

Spymac speculation: the 5GB iPod

Spymac speculation: the 5GB iPod 12/02/2003 03:04 AM
When a company is leading a saturated market by several percentage points with a $299 low-end model, most would say there’s little room for improvement. With accolades galore, a corporation enjoying such a position could indeed rest until the gap closes, only to scramble once the competition catches on. Indeed… but those other companies don’t have Steve Jobs as a CEO.

Speculation: Magnesium iMacs?

Speculation: Magnesium iMacs? 12/10/2003 11:37 AM
Digitimes is reporting that Apple will launch a "New New iMac" in early 2004. Taiwanese IT sources claim that Apple is adopting less expensive materials and a simplified manufacturing process in order to offer a more competitive cost. New iMac sales have been lackluster, with the unique model selling only half as well as the original iMac Apple launched in 1998. The first "New New iMac" is reported to feature an aluminum-alloy case and a 20-inch LCD display, and is...

Politically Motivated Domain Name
Speculation
06/21/2004 12:39 PM
Combine the return of high prices for domains from speculators with the latest election season, and it should be no surprise that people everywhere are trying to pick up domain names for the Presidential candidates. Some, obviously, are designed to be parodies of real campaign websites, while others are just up for sale. While the article makes it sound surprising that campaigns haven't snapped up some of the more "obvious" domain names, you have to wonder who is actually convinced by a satirical website about their election day choices? The big bets on the Democratic side of the domain speculation aisle is coming up with potential domain names that include the name of the unknown VP candidate in the hopes that the campaign will shell out big bucks after the announcement is made. Of course, with so many people speculating, it should drive those prices down, since the campaign will have their choice of domain names to play off each other.

In the wake of my past two Macworld San Francisco speculation articles, rumors have been swirling surrounding both iPod and iLife updates. That, coupled with the usual surprises and last-minute decisions, adds up to a very exciting Macworld (and well into January, no doubt). Last year’s Macworld was a whirlwind of releases and new technologies, which saw updated PowerBooks, Airport Extreme and iLife. As I’ve said before, this year also looks to see another iLife demonstration, with...

Spymac speculation: MWSF hardware 12/14/2003 12:24 PM
With Macworld just three weeks away, the rumor mill has been virtually silent, leading to increased conjecture about the event: will Steve Jobs recognize the Mac’s 20th anniversary with a special edition machine? Will he continue San Francisco’s streak of stunning releases by popping a G5 into the iMac and redesigning it to match the new aluminum feel of Apple’s pro products? Will his turtleneck be red?
