AP - Everyone knew the marathon was going to be tough, but having to dodge a would-be tackler in a kilt, green beret and matching knee-high socks wasn't an expected obstacle. It was definitely a bizarre way to end the Olympics. Even the highly unusual fact that an American won a silver medal paled in comparison.

Open maps of London event: April 14,
London
04/04/2005 06:24 AM
Cory Doctorow: The Open Knowledge Forums are a series of lectures and panel discussions about the ways that "open knowledge" can benefit the public interest. The next one is a week away, in London, and it's about a plan to produce a set of public domain maps of London (London's maps were produced at tax-payer expense, but can't be freely used; rather, you have to pay the ordinance survey thousands of pounds for the privilege; by contrast, US government maps are free and plentiful, and form the basis for thousands and thousand of competing mapping efforts, from Michelin guides to Google Maps).

There are a number of interesting proposals for this, including deploying an army of GPS-wielding geohackers, and buying up Russian satellite photos of London. Check out this squib from last January's NTK:

London's geowanking fraternity have come up with an intriguing proposition. With a grand's worth of Russian 1-meter resolution satellite pics, they believe they can stitch together an entirely free, redistributable vector database of the capital, freed from the shackles of the Ordnance Survey's restrictive copyrights, and thus open to all manner of GPL-style repurposing.
Here are the details:
* When: Thurs April 14th 2005, 7-9pm

* Where: Stanhope Centre, Marble Arch, London. [WWW]Directions

* Who can attend: public. Registration is optional but useful so please notify us if you can via okforums-info@okfn.org.

DotGeek.org is proud to announce the second PHP Programming Marathon to be held on the 24 April 2004. Quick announcement:

Anne had lots of Marathon stuff written up (we compose everything offline in Textedit) and the fucking computer locked up. Like a bonehead, I'd forgotten to save it (along with some other important stuff) so it was lost.

I tried cashing in all my computer geek points to resurrect it, but it was DC 45, and all I got was a modified 8.

So that's been set back at least a few days. We both know how many of you guys who supported us and Kris are looking forward to the story wrapping up, but I hope you'll bear with us a little bit longer while our Real Lives take up most of our attention.

Marathon Strikes 10

Marathon Strikes 10 12/27/2004 01:22 AM
Marathon, a classic Mac FPS which was said to have rivaled the Doom series, reached its tenth anniversary this week. The official game has been long dead since Microsoft purchased Bungie, but a thriving community has enhanced the popular title and kept it up-to-date. This year, celebrate Marathon's tenth anniversary by playing Marathon: Aleph One. If you don't currently own a copy of the original game, don't forget to download the demo files as well (available on the Aleph One page).

I finished the NYRR Holiday Four Mile Run (38:31) this morning and with it completed nine qualifying NYRR races, which means: I've got guaranteed entry into the 2005 NYC Marathon. Yay! As I said to my friend Adriana this morning after the race, "Obviously something's wrong with us if we're waking up to run in 32° weather every weekend for the purpose of gaining entry into a marathon!" Of course, I mean "wrong" in the good sense! I've already got two marathons and one half-marathon scheduled for 2005. Now let's hope my hip injury heals in time.

Marathon training principles

Marathon training principles 06/17/2004 08:31 AM
From Runner's World, common sense 10 Principles of Marathon Training: A marathon training program can survive any challenge -- as long as your determination remains strong. Here are 10 principles to carry you through your training. From my four and seven-year-old cousins when I told them I was going to run the NYC Marathon: Cousins: How far is a marathon? Meg: How far do you think it is? C: Ten miles? M: Guess again. C: 20 miles? M: More than that, keep guessing. C: 300 miles?! M: Oh no, not 300. Only 26 miles. But still, that's like four hours of running non-stop! C (McKenna): Oh, that's not so bad. That's only sixty minutes. Plus sixty minutes. Plus sixty minutes. Plus sixty minutes. And she's right. I know I can run sixty minutes. Now I'll just do it four times in a row.

The very long half-marathon

The very long half-marathon 03/22/2005 03:36 PM
Saturday morning I ran the Brooklyn Half-Marathon, a supposed final "tune-up" before the Paris Marathon which looms before me on April 10th. Since I've been skiing a lot more than I should be, and running a lot less (with the slim hope that all the skiing will be close enough to running to "count"), I'd lowered my goal for Paris from Sub 4:30 Marathon to Just Finish and Have Fun. Judging by my performance on Saturday, Just Finish will be a challenge, and Have Fun will be unachievable. Guh! Who would have thought 13.1 miles could be sooooo looooong? Perhaps it was because I skied for nearly seven straight days, then headed to San Diego where I barely got any rest and conferenced up a storm, then flew the red-eye back to NY and two nights before the race had only 4 hours sleep? Perhaps it's because I just haven't done the work. Either way, my legs felt like lead, and I had to coax them through the flats of Brooklyn and then plead with them through the rolling hills of Prospect Park. Final result? 2:18:52. I'm really beginning to dread Paris.

Paris Marathon training plan

Paris Marathon training plan 02/01/2005 09:14 PM
I've begun my training for the Paris Marathon though I haven't really been running much yet. I've been doing some swimming, a lot of downhill skiing, ice skating/hockey, and some snowshoeing. I guess you'd call that cross-training, wouldn't you? When I trained last year for the New York City Marathon, I followed this Marathon Training for Beginners program from Runner's World. It worked great and I felt 100% prepared when I got to the start. But when I looked at their Intermediate Program, it seemed awful long for someone who was already in marathon shape, especially since I was hoping to give my body a little time to recover from NYC. After talking with some more experienced marathoners (including a sub three hour runner), I gravitated towards a shorter program that encourages less running per week but stresses higher mileage. I'm using Hal Higdon's Senior Marathon Training Program. It has three major benefits for me right now: 1. It's only eight weeks long, meaning I don't have to really start running regularly until the week of February 13th. That gives me a little more recovery time for my achy hip and lets me do more fun outdoor activities. Otherwise I'd be using up nearly all my energy running, and that wouldn't be much fun! 2. It (hopefully) gives New Hampshire some time to warm up! It's been brutally cold here, around -10° F (-23° C) at my usual morning running time. I don't mind running in the cold, but -10° is a little too cold. 3. With only three days of running, I have time for cross-training. For the two Stretch & Strengthen (S & S) days, I'm going to a Masters swim team program (no racing, just good organized swim workouts) and doing weights when I get home. Will the less is more approach work? A big test will be the NYRR Brooklyn Half-Marathon on March 19th. My goal for Paris is 4:30, which means I need to do 2:15 or better in Brooklyn. That's less than two months from now, so I guess I'll find out soon enough!
