Safire Takes A Shot At Us

Safire Takes A Shot At Us 01/07/2004 02:11 PM
William Safire has managed, by his current lexicographical persona, to obscure the memory that he once sat on the right hand of Richard Nixon. He reminded me of that earlier, less avuncular, Safire this morning. He has an op-ed in today's New York Times that is astonishingly smug and nasty, even for him. In it, he gloats over his perception of a deepening division between the centrist, Clinton-esque wing of Democratic party and what he describes as "The Dean-Internet Party, its Bush-despising base so energized as to be frenetic, its leader happy to be the apostle of anger, its bandwidth bandwagon gaining momentum with each pulse of its cursing cursor." There's more to be said about the political depths of this remark, but it's Christmas eve, and I'm in a charitable mood. Besides, the television vs. Internet, Industrial vs. Virtual, corporate vs. individual nature of this election, is a subject that demands more thorough discussion than I have time for this morning. The most grimly entertaining part of his screed comes at its end. Safire proposes a scenario in which Dean will falter, and, after the Democratic party has been recaptured by the Republicrats, he will leave the party in a sulk, creating conditions for a Bush landslide. Safire worries that a huge Bush mandate, as opposed to his mere reelection, might be bad for the country. Right. We can't afford to lose this one, folks. If we do, we'll have to set our watches back 60 years. If they even let us have watches in the camps, that is....

The former high-flying bible of the Internet economy crashed and burned during the dot-com debacle. IDG, which was the Standard's majority owner during the glory days, bought the rights to the magazine's name after it filed for bankruptcy in 2001.

DRM Ownership Token

DRM Ownership Token 01/29/2004 02:49 AM

There is a big rant exchange going on over music encoding schemes (WMA, AAC, MP3), DRM, and degree of choice.  It all started with Robert Scoble and then bounced all across the board touching off iPod fanatics, Microsoft hater, and copyright guerillas.

As for me, I don't think music encoding scheme will matter in the future.  I think market competition, consumer activism, and hackers together will eventually force online music services to provide a token of ownership for each music one buys, a token that can used to get same music encoded in a different format.

Anything else will be as attractive as going to a underground disco without fire escapes.

Checking Code Ownership

Checking Code Ownership 10/29/2003 12:10 AM
SCO claims that hundreds of lines of their Unix SVR4 code have somehow been mixed with the millions of lines of the Linux kernel, and that SCO should therefore receive a billion dollars from IBM. (Or something like that. Novell says that SCO doesn't own SVR4, SCO says they do own SVRx, Eric Raymond says that SVR4 contains misattributed BSD Unix code, and Darl McBride of SCO says something different every week.) I'll let you in on a dirty little secret: Many large software systems contain stolen or misattributed code. This is true of both in-house software and shrinkwrap software.

Home Ownership Should Not be Roulette

Home Ownership Should Not be Roulette 05/12/2004 12:48 PM
Risk is the elixir that made Silicon Valley great. But when people treat housing like a late-1990s technology stock investment, common sense has run off the rails. Mortgage lenders are putting home buyers into so-called ``nothing-down'' and ``interest-only'' loans, the Mercury News' Sue McAllister reported last weekend. The lenders pushing such deals are irresponsible because they're encouraging a dangerous kind of debt.

PC ownership to 'double by 2010'  (BBC News)

The number of personal computers worldwide is expected to double by 2010 to 1.3 billion machines, say analysts. The growth will be driven by emerging markets such as China, Russia and India, the report predicted. My question is, what operating system will these new markets use on their PC's? China has already endorsed their Red Linux. Will Linux finally get it's chance, or will these new markets continue to use pirated Windows versions?
