Apple's jackboots step on PlayFair in
India.
04/18/2004 12:23 AM

Sarovar, an open source project site in India has received a legal threat from an Indian solicitor in the pay of Apple Computer. PlayFair had been moved there after Sourceforge removed it in response to Apple's DMCA threat to them. The letter demanded that Sarovar remove the PlayFair project from its site. Apparently feeling it had no choice, Sarovar has complied.

Apple takes Playfair bullying to India

Apple takes Playfair bullying to India 04/16/2004 11:50 AM
Playfair is the program that removes the use-restriction wrapper from your iTunes Music Store tracks. It used to be hosted on SourceForge, but they chickened out when Apple sent them a bullying note demanding takedown under the ludicrous and loathesome DMCA. Playfair moved to a host in India, which apparently has no such law, but now Apple has nastygrammed the Indian hosts too, resulting in another takedown while the Indians get some legal advice. Gee, Apple, you really can't buy publicity like this. Well, you can. But why would you want to? Link (via /.)

Whoa. People I know are in the Apple Music store. I can pay to download last year's Fray Cafe and the 2001 Fray too (I can buy Lance Arthur and Mena Trott for 99 cents!). The Brad Sucks album is there too (psst: you can download it from his site for free, and it's unencrypted or buy the CD direct from him like I did). I even see a search for "Scott Andrew" is turning a song up from the Fray CD, with hopefully more to come.

Playfair is back! 05/11/2004 03:34 AM
Playfair is the iTuens music player that removed the restrictions from the music you bought from Apple. It was hounded off Sourceforge by Apple's lawyers, and then it relocated to a server in India, only to be removed again at Apple's behest. Now it's back a third time, still hosted in India, with a new name: "hymn" (Hear Your Music aNywhere).
playfair has been renamed to hymn (hear your music anywhere) and is back online with the legal backing of FSF India. It has been updated with the latest FairPlay code from VideoLAN.

Audible Hits the Black

"The latest issue of Publishers Weekly reports that digital spoken word e-tailer Audible Inc. has recorded its first profitable quarter. Their revenue increased by 68% for the first quarter of 2004. Librarians pay attention! We need to be thinking of ways to provide our users with downloadable spoken word audio. The market indicates that this will be more popular than the failed attempts to garner interest in e-books." [LISNews.com]

This is GREAT news because Audible is a library-friendly company. Proof: we just closed the second enrollment period for ListenIllinois, our collaborative Audible group purchase with the ListenOhio folks, and we added eight more libraries (which gives us a total of 20)! So a formal welcome to the following:

Edwardsville Public Library
Glen Ellyn Public Library

Harvard Diggins Library
Highland Community College Library
North Suburban Library District
Morton College Library

Roxana Public Library District
Wilmington Public Library District

In addition, several of the existing participants are adding players and licenses, so I'm officially declaring this project a success. :-)  Hopefully I can spend some time this summer gathering statistics to back up this claim.

We'll open enrollment again in September, so Illinois libraries should plan their budgets accordingly. Contact me for details if you're interested!

Tivo Sucks Like Audible.com 04/22/2004 01:29 PM
A while back I ranted about Audible.com making account cancellation difficult. Well, our friends over at Tivo are no better. After browsing around their "customer service" site it became apparent that they were more than willing to take more of my money on-line, but heaven forbid they let me cancel service. Instead I found a page that explains that I must call Tivo to arrange for that. Nowhere on the page do they provide justification for this inconvenience, of course....

Is Audible Magic Vaporware?

Is Audible Magic Vaporware? 06/02/2004 06:24 PM
The RIAA has been doing its best to talk up the wonders of Audible Magic's system for filtering out copyrighted files from file sharing networks, but some are beginning to wonder if it's all just vaporware. They've been talking about this silver bullet solution and have apparently been showing demos to politicians (not known for having the most critical eyes when seeing demos), but have yet to show anything publicly. Recently, RIAA chief Mitch Bainwol stated he "would be delighted" to show the technology to the various file sharing network companies. So, the file sharing companies took him up on the offer, and sent him a note saying that, sure, they'd like to see the technology. Bainwol has suddenly gone quiet and doesn't seem quite so interested in having them actually see it. It seems unlikely that the product is really vaporware - but it also seems quite unlikely that it really works all that well. Even if it does work, I imagine that it will take less than a day for people to figure out workarounds.

Previously, the only available Mac-ready mobile options compatible with Audible's proprietary file format were Apple's iPod and the company's own Otis portable player. An Audible representative told MacCentral that the plug-in is part of the firmware upgrade that you receive when you download the AudiblePlayer for Palm application as part of the Audible service set-up. The plug-in was declared "gold" on Monday and should now be part of the firmware upgrade.
