New York Times article about brightly
colored, toy-like, packaged dinners for kids.
"The new products are a mix of adult-pleasing convenience and
child-pleasing shock value ... a hamburger meal with a patty shaped
like a house and cookies that look like bricks... a line of jellies
for dinner rolls in flavors like watermelon, sour apple and banana...
hot pink and electric blue margarine... neon-colored salad dressings
with names like Purple Pizzazzz and Outrageous Orange.... blue fries,
which can be dipped in the purple, orange, pink and teal ketchups..."

Getting Kids To Program Old School Video
Games
04/06/2005 06:48 AMIt seems that every recent story about Atari has been about their
attempts (in their modern form -- quite different from the original
Atari) to
make
a killing on the nostalgia market, offering up classic games from
years back to today's adults -- either on computers or (increasingly)
on mobile phones. However, it appears that many feel the basic
concepts of old Atari videogames are still valuable for game designers
to learn -- resulting in a
competition to design new games for the Atari 2600. Of
course, there's one twist: the games needed to be created in 24 hours.
While the story is amusing to read, what it really does is remind
people that, despite all the amazing graphics found in today's game, a
game is still about
gameplay at its core -- which many of
today's game designers seem to forget.

Home Is Where The WiFi Is (And In Some
Fast Food Restaurants)
01/07/2004 06:35 PMA new study shows that
more
and more homes are likely to get WiFi connections. This seems
like one of the more obvious predictions around, but it's still
interesting to look at the numbers. The study points out that there
are currently about 100 million broadband connections to the home
worldwide - and only 5 million home users have WiFi. However, with
the technology getting cheaper every day, and the clear benefit of
having a wireless network in the home, it's likely to grow pretty
rapidly (and, of course, that 100 million number isn't static either).
This leads to two thoughts: (1) we still need to make setting up a
WiFi network easier. Early adopters will mess around with finicky
access points, but most users won't. It really needs to be plug and
play. (2) Once more homes get WiFi, expect the unexpected in how
they're used. Just like businesses are discovering - once that
wireless network is there, there's no reason not to use it for other
purposes as well. More devices are going to come with WiFi, and if
they can just hop on an existing network, people are going to come up
with all sorts of creative uses. Meanwhile, McDonald's continues
their "we'll test a different location every few months" rollout of
WiFi, as they've agreed to
WiFi up over 500 restaurants
in the UK. It looks like they're just teaming up with BT to be a
part of BT's Openzone WiFi offering. That doesn't seem like the best
choice, since already there are (reasonable) complaints that
Openzone's pricing is way too high for what people get. In early
tests in the US McDonald's was using a very smart pricing plan (buy a
meal, get an hour of free service). It's unclear why they're not
going with a similar plan in the UK. By offering up service with a
meal, the internet access becomes a promotion to get more people into
the restaurant. By charging insanely high fees for it, it doesn't
bring in too many extra people, and certainly won't bring in much
money.

Do home-schooled kids have better
manners?
Do home-schooled kids have better
manners?
06/15/2004 06:19 PMOn Sunday I attended a block party hosted by a friend up in
Newburyport. He had hired an English circus family to
perform and afterwards I served some food and drink to the
13-year-old and 16-year-old members of this family. Unlike the
typical sullen American teenager they had exquisite manners. It
turned out that they had never been to school. They'd lived
their whole lives traveling around with their parents and siblings,
oftentimes in a smallish RV (they started calling themselves "the
Sardine Family" because of these cramped quarters). All of their
education came from their parents and from older siblings.
Could it be that going into a community of thousands of teenagers
(i.e., school) is bad for a kid's manners? And that spending time with
a high percentage of adults (i.e., home school) is good for a kid's
manners?

Spying On Your Kids Is In For 2004
Spying On Your Kids Is In For 2004
12/22/2003 04:27 AMIt's no secret that most new mobile phones come with location-based
technology included - whether using GPS or some triangulation method
around the nearest cell towers. While some were afraid that this
would mean annoying text message spam or that the police would be able
to spy on your whereabouts thanks to the E-911 problem - instead, it
looks like people are just going to be spying on each other, with
special emphasis being paid to
the ability for parents to spy on their kids.
Now, I can certainly understand the desire to keep tabs on your kids,
but constantly spying on them seems counter productive. It certainly
doesn't give them much confidence in their own ability to make
decisions without having their parents looking over their shoulders
all the time. Treating your kids like prisoners with location
ankle-bracelets seems likely to, well, make them act more like
prisoners, rather than kids. Now, clearly, this technology wasn't
around when I was growing up, but I still appreciated the fact that my
parents trusted me to do the right thing when I was away from home.
It made me feel more comfortable since I knew that
they felt
comfortable enough with my decision making ability.
