Cross browser SVG

Cross browser SVG 06/05/2005 11:19 PM
Firefox 1.0+ builds now have SVG enabled by default. To test it out I changed an SVG animation I created 2 years ago. It is a 3D animation of a cube morphing into an icosahedron. It works in Firefox 1.0+ and in Internet Explorer with the Adobe SVG Plugin. Sadly Opera 8, which has some SVG support, shows nothing at all.

Stations Of The Cross

Stations Of The Cross 06/22/2005 02:58 AM
Stations Of The Cross, a piece on "faith-based" news outlets from the May/June Columbia Journalism Review: "In recent months, evangelical broadcasters have dedicated program after program to bemoaning 'judicial tyranny,' and urging audiences to agitate for the 'nuclear option' — changing Senate rules so Democrats can no longer filibuster and thereby block nominees they oppose....All the while, the dizzying blend of God, news, and politics that he [Pat Robertson] has crafted and honed was bouncing off satellites, winding through thousands of cable systems, rippling over the airwaves, and glowing on television screens across America." When Does Heckling Cross the Line?

When Does Heckling Cross the Line? 09/16/2004 01:19 PM
Heckling? Good Natured Fun or Verbal Abuse
The recent assault of a fan by Texas Rangers' reliever Frank Francisco with a folding chair is inexcusable, there's no doubt about that. But what about the fans who literally spend every moment at the park needling, heckling and verbally abusing the players?
There's a difference between ribbing the opposing team and calling an athlete a fat f***. Where does the line get drawn and why is any heckling permitted anymore?

Another tool capable of doing the same job is a program called CMake, the cross-platform, open-source make system. If you have not done so already, read the Autotools vs. CMake article in which Andy Cedilnik answers a few questions I put to him.

Give to the Red Cross via Amazon 12/29/2004 08:38 PM
While I'm no Jim Winstead I used the Amazon Honor System yesterday to give to the Red Cross. "1-click donation". Very easy. Go do it already. Vani found a PDF or some such at the redcross.org site detailing how they are spending the money - most importantly they don't spend an unreasonable amount on paper pushing. When I gave 18,000 people had given a total of $900,000 via the Amazon system. Now it's at close to $3,000,000 from 50,000 people....

American Red Cross Needs your Support

American Red Cross Needs your Support 09/26/2004 01:41 AM

My 14 year old is going thru her 4th Hurricane of her life. She experienced Typhoons when we lived in Guam and I know they scared her to death. As a worried dad I will have to wait some more anxious days before I get the call from her or her mother letting me she is ok and the damage incurred.

I have always championed the American Red Cross as they helped me in my time of need when I was surviving 37 days without electricity/water after Typhoon Omar some years ago. Please get out your credit cards and make a donation.

Here is the challenge donate $50.00 or more to the American Red Cross send me a personal note saying you did and I will mention your weblog here on Geek News Central in a upcoming post. This is on the honor system.

The Cross Site Scripting FAQ

The Cross Site Scripting FAQ 06/06/2002 06:01 AM
Websites today are more complex than ever, containing a lot of dynamic content making the experience for the user more enjoyable. Dynamic content is achieved through the use of web applications which can deliver different output to a user depending on their settings and needs.

Dynamic websites have a threat that static websites don't, called "Cross Site Scripting" (or XSS dubbed by other security professionals). Currently small informational tidbits about Cross Site Scripting holes exist but none really explain them to an average person or administrator. This FAQ was written to provide a better understanding of this emerging threat, and to give guidance on detection and prevention.

Remoting -- sharing data between server and client processes -- is powerful, but writing your own protocols is tedious and difficult. XML-RPC is too simple and SOAP and CORBA are too complex. Isn't there something in the middle, something easier to set up and use? Michael W. Collins introduces mod_perlservice, an Apache httpd module that provides remote services to C, Perl, or Flash clients.
