Naming Difficulties For Gaming Device

Naming Difficulties For Gaming Device

Naming Difficulties For Gaming Device 04/16/2004 01:11 PM

Well, this is just bizarre. Tiger Telematics has been working on a handheld gaming device called the Gametrac for a while now. While it hasn't received as much publicity as things like Sony's upcoming gaming handheld, Nokia's N-Gage or even Tapwave's Zodiac, it certainly hasn't been unknown. However, it looks like there was some legal skirmish over the name "Gametrac" and t hey've changed it to... Gizmondo. Um... Wait a second... Gizmondo sounds an awful lot like Gizmodo, the gadget website. If they thought they had naming problems with Gametrac, you would think they'd look around at similar names for their new device also. Though, come to think of it, Gizmodo's competitor Engadget sounds sort of like "N-Gage." Maybe it's a trend: having gaming devices and gadget blogs named after each other. Now, where are the lawsuits?

Nintendo Working On Different Gaming
Device

Nintendo has been in trouble for a while. They've been losing out to Sony and Microsoft in the game console world, and are suddenly facing increased competition in the handheld gaming world (which Sony will soon enter as well). Many people were pretty much writing them off, but now they've said they're getting ready to launch a completely new device, that is not an update on either their console GameCube or their handheld Game Boy Advance. What it is... they won't say. In fact, they're being so secretive, that they apparently haven't even mentioned this to Nintendo's US executives, keeping it entirely in Japan. People are guessing, and the idea that seems to make the most sense is something that jumps on the online gaming bandwagon, but we'll have to wait until May of next year to find out for sure.

Mobile Gaming Device Subsidized With

Mobile Gaming Device Subsidized With

09/08/2004 05:26 AM
Remember back in the bubble days when everything you could ever possibly want (including cars and computers) were available for free if you just agreed to advertising? Apparently we're coming back to bubble thinking. Tiger Telematics made something of an odd splash a few months ago when they announced that the portable gaming device they were working on was going to be called Gizmondo, which didn't endear them to the folks at gadget website Gizmodo. However, some more details have come out about the device -- including their back-to-the-bubble ideas concerning business models. In order to compete with all the competition from Nintendo, Sony, Nokia, Tapwave and others, they've decided to make the device as cheap as possible, while subsidizing it with downloadable video ads. Yes, that's right. You'll be able to get your cheapo device, but you'll have to agree to watch 3 video ads per day. The ads are intended to be targeted, and will have some sort of actionable component to them (the example given is a movie trailer with the ability to click through and buy tickets on the fly). Of course, with prices already pretty low on many of these devices (often subsidized by game revenue) it may be tough to really compete unless they can somehow get the price down somewhere near free. At the same time, despite the GPS location tracking component of the device, these video ads don't seem to really do anything to take advantage of your mobility (other than to suggest the local theater). We've said it before, but simply forcing ads on people in a mobile environment isn't going to get anyone very far. Someone who's mobile has far too many distractions. What will happen to the Gizmondo when advertisers realize no one is paying attention to the ads and they refuse to buy any more?

Today was the big day that Coca-Cola was expected to be yet another brand to launch yet another online music download store - but it appears the site wasn't designed particularly well, as it failed as soon as the doors opened. You would think that a company as large as Coca-Cola would do a bit more testing before opening the doors. They also are claiming that they're the "the first consumer branded, legitimate downloadable music site", which Apple might take issue with.

CSS Naming Conventions

CSS Naming Conventions 05/30/2004 07:03 PM

Here's a discussion about core naming conventions for CSS (via Anil Dash).

Naming for Performance

Naming for Performance 01/16/2004 01:02 PM

One of the not often discussed cause of slow performance is careless naming.

When you are naming a method that does more than get or set some value, try to avoid a name that might mislead the caller into calling it multiple times instead of saving it to a local variable.  For example, if a method is named GetTopicName, the caller is not going to expect it to search for the value and instantiate many objects in the course of doing so.  Instead use a name that implies and warns the caller about the cost of the method, like FindTopicName or CalcPrime.

When using a language that supports properties like C#, try not to turn heavy methods into properties.  Property getters and setters should be light operations.  If you have to, then try to precalculate the value and update on change via event handlers.  Failing that, try to warn the developer using documentation so the developer can use the property accordingly.

One caveat: Guidelines are not meant to be straightjackets.  Don't do it if you can't do it.

Naming and shaming Apple UK...

Naming and shaming Apple UK... 07/11/2004 08:38 AM

Random consumer-action week on plasticbag.org continues today with a shout-out to my colleague Matt Webb, who has been having considerable trouble with his no-longer quite so new Powerbook 12". More specifically he's having considerable trouble with Apple's replacement and repair policies. He received the machine on Apil 30th, it went wrong on the 12th of May and he's been trying to get it fixed pretty much ever since. That's a full two months of effort during which he's gone through Apple's diagnostic tests, not had his computer picked up, had the machine kept by Apple for 28 days and then had it returned to him with precisely the same problem he started off with.

No. I've had people not call me back, an official complaint ignored, kept in the dark about time estimates, my machine sitting in a repair center for a month and not even picked up for 2 weeks. I'm not going through that again.

Customer services open at 9am Monday morning. I've talked with them before, they obey The System. They can't do anything. In fact there's no-one who can. If I don't do what The System says, there's nothing they can do. Enough. I've dealt with a broken product, tried to be a good Apple user and done what they asked. Enough. I've been writing down the time and length of phone calls to Apple, and what they've said, for the last month and a half. I've got the names of the people who haven't called me back.

Enough with official channels.

I want a new computer, one that works, and I want it not in a month, but now, as it should have been to begin with. I want an apology. If it were possible, I'd want the days I've spent on this back, because the time this has cost me, on the phone to Apple, doing tests, moving things around,is now worth more than the machine itself.

Both Matt and I are tremendous fans of Apple computers, Apple UI and the innovation that comes out of Cupertino. But this has been happening now for months. Just from watching it happen, I've found myself turning from a rabid Mac evangelist to someone who wouldn't want to risk inflicting this kind of insane process on anyone. My mother has been thinking of getting a new laptop - and I've been trying to move them to a Mac. But I can't put them through this kind of thing? Do the right thing, Apple! Bloody sort yourselves out!

PodShanking: A Revolution in Naming 03/19/2005 02:45 AM

podshank.jpgFor moment, I was excited to hear about 'PodShanking,' the idea and term coined in this article on The Mod Gods (which takes itself pretty seriously, but they'll get learn how to hack a girl to give it up soon enough). The whole shtick is that they are doing iPod-to-iPod direct transfers, except they are really just using voice recorders with line-in to make low(er)-fi versions of analog audio, which means the picture they made showing a single 1/8th-inch plug is fairly disingenuous. Anyway, I have no point, really, except I'd like for someone to finally explain to me why it's been 3 years and nobody has hacked together a way to do a direct transfer of digital files via the bottom port with a crossover cable. Don't tell me it's too hard, just do it. I'll be over here making a sandwich.

Also, that 'Joel Johnson' in the comments isn't me. I don't know what the hell he's talking about.

Americans are naming their babies after
brands
11/14/2003 02:27 AM
Increasingly, American parents are naming their children after major corporate brands, particularily car-model names. A psych prof who's been studying social security rolls to gather info on child-naming for 25 years says that the 2000 data indicates a sharp uptick in brand-based naming, which he describes as the 21st-century aspirational equivalents of the Victorians who named their daughters Opal and Ruby.
He has found that car models are a popular source of inspiration; 22 girls are registered as having the name Infiniti while 55 boys answer to Chevy and five girls to Celica.

Seven boys were found to have the name Del Monte - after the food company - and no less than 49 boys were called Canon, after the camera.

Designer firms and types of clothing were also well represented, with almost 300 girls recorded with the name Armani, six boys called Timberland and seven boys called Denim.

In some cases it seems something else was on some parents' minds - six boys were named after Courvoisier cognac.

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. (KB825116)

DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.
