Analysts Skeptical Of iPod Mini Pricing,
Overall Success
01/07/2004 06:15 PM
Industry watchers are somewhat skeptical that Apple's newly announced iPod Mini will be as successful at its first generation portable music players because its US$249 price tag is not low enough to compete with other players and is too close in price to its 15GB model to warrant the US$50 difference. 3 tales of how a bit of success has made
Apple evil--you be the judge

3 tales of how a bit of success has made
Apple evil--you be the judge
03/17/2005 03:43 AM
First off, PC Mag writer, Lance Ulanoff, digs up some old news and rehashes the old iPod battery controversy in The Truth About iPod Batteries. Yes, the batteries run down--all do. Yes, Apple has a replacement program that may result in the whole iPod being replaced with a repaired or refurbished iPod--that is no secret and stated in the terms of the replacement program. Even Ulanoff realizes this when he concludes, "The iPod's a good player. Apple's not trying to pull a fast one, and some of you need to learn a little more about rechargeable battery care."

Secondly, there's CNET News' Ina Fried's article on how Apple seeks 'tax' on iPod accessories. This is in regards to the "Made for iPod" program that Apple launched at Macworld earlier this year. The article refers to, but neglect to link to the AppleInsider article which states that the "Made for iPod" logo implies a certification that "that iPod accessory manufactures can display to differentiate their Apple-authorized accessories from those that have not been approved by the iPod maker." Does Apple have the right to charge for such a stamp of approval?

And lastly, we have Apple steals iTunes customers' paid-for rights to stream, a Boing Boing piece posted by Cory Doctorow that points out a double-cross Apple has played on those who have purchased iTunes music earlier than about a month ago--you no longer have the ability to stream it to anyone on your local network as you were assured at the time of purchase. iTunes now limits the number of people you can stream your music to in a 24 hour period.

Wi-Fi's Success is HomePlug Success 09/17/2004 12:24 PM
Leaders of the power line networking space say that Wi-Fi's success in the home helps the power line networking industry: A spokesman for Intellon, which makes power line networking chips, says that the dead spots that result from many Wi-Fi networks in homes create an opportunity for power line networking, which can be used for network access in the dead zones. HomePlug, the alliance of power line networking companies, is also hoping to get ahead of its networking competition with a new standard it is working on that will be fast enough to support high-definition TV....

No 60 gb iPod according to Apple 07/20/2004 05:43 PM

My 30 gig iPod is full to the rim, and since I have been collecting an average of 300 megs of legal non copyright infringing unknown artist music a week, I need some more room. My wife wants the 30 I have now, so I am hoping that Engadget is correct and think Apple is bluffing. I can hold her off a couple of months but I am hoping that they do have a 60 gig model in works as I will be buying one if they do. The wife says she doesn't want a mini she wants the real deal. You fellows out their understand what the means. [Engadget]
