Ecto for Windows launches, BoingBoing
now a 100% Ecto bl0g!
04/14/2004 12:49 AM
The popular blogging-aid software Ecto -- once only offered for Mac -- is now available for Windows users. With today's launch of Ecto for Windows, BoingBoing officially becomes an all-ecto blog! My BoingBoing co-editors all use it to make blogging with Movable Type more friendly and efficient. I'm the only PC-afflicted blogger in the bunch. TypePad, MovableType, Nucleus, and Blogger users: rejoice. Ecto co-creator Adriaan Tijsseling says:
Joi and me are very happy to announce the release of a beta of a Windows port of ecto, thanks to a unique collaboration with Alex Hung. It is our hope that with this collaboration the ease of use and features of ecto will now be available to the Windows users. The beta trial will last one month, during which we hope to find bugs and improve on the product with the help of user feedback. Any information about this beta will be on the ecto for Windows webpage as Alex will be the main responsible person for this Windows version.

Ecto

Ecto 02/10/2004 02:53 AM
So, I finally bit the bullet and paid for Ecto, the most excellent upgrade to Adriaan Tijsseling's Kung Log. No longer donationware (which I expect most people donated--I admit, alas, that I didn't) but payware with a two-week trial period. And I have to say... this is darned sweet. Being able to manage multiple blogs at once (with the odd blip here and there--drafts don't store which account they were associated with so far as I can see) is really nice, especially now that we're looking at using Movable Type as an in-house project support tool. Using MT certainly beats...

Is ecto available for the PC? 08/27/2004 01:47 PM

Great news - but I believe it's irrelevant for me and 98% of the world:

Roland Tanglao congratulates Adriaan Tijsseling (I do too!)

Go Adriaan go! In 2004, I don't know why this is so difficult, I mean how old is Dreamweaver? Anyways, I am glad ecto is raising the bar finally in blog writing software.

From ecto blog: Can you spell 'WYSIWYAG'?:

QUOTE

This is a draft in Rich Text editing mode. One can switch from Rich to HTML and back indefinitely. In the Rich Text mode, a series of buttons will appear to easily allow setting the various font and paragraph peculiarities (alignment, indentation, cursive, bold, underline, strike-through, font-color, background color, font face). The buttons are modelled after Panther's neat Font panel, which obviously also has effect here. Don't mind the gray background color, that's fully customizable. By default background is white and foreground is black.

Note the highlighted square in the corner of the attached image. It's the resize knob to give users basic control over the size of the image. To control more options, double-clicking the attachment will reveal the attachment settings sheet.

There's not really much to it, I guess, but it should make writing blog entries a bit more easier, especially for those who don't care or know much about HTML.

Ecto, the OS X blogging client by Adriaan (disclosure: Adriaan works for me) is out for beta testing. Check it out.

Ecto 2 beta

Ecto 2 beta 09/09/2004 08:59 AM
Cory Doctorow: All four Boing Boing editors use Ecto, a blogging sool, to post and manage our material here. Today, a public beta of Ecto 2 launches, a major update that I'm excited as hell to get my hands on.
The basic idea behind ecto's WYSIAWYG is to offer users the ability to compose entries without having to bother with HTML tags. Since most blog entries are not complete web sites, composition of entries only allows font and paragraph changes, indentation (read "blockquote"), and obviously images (video and audio should follow shortly). Regarding image authoring I had two ways of implementing support for it. I tried the extreme version involving containers and layouts but that produced quite a bit of headache and would slow down typesetting too much. Considering that Tiger's WebKit will allow editing, I chose the easier route. Images can still be positioned and resized in place, but text flow is not what you will see. That's one reason for the 'A' in WYSIAWYG... 'almost' (If your entry fails to post, read "Got" instead of "Get"...).

Giving Ecto a try

Giving Ecto a try 02/10/2004 02:44 AM

Just downloaded Ado's update to Kung-Log, called Ecto. Seems to have a nice and easy set up, and the posting interface appears pretty clean. Automatic spell-checking is there as well, which is a nice feature too. If only it wasn't only available for this lousy Mac hardware. I've said it before and I'll say it again: If IBM and Apple teamed up and released OSX on a Thinkpad T40, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Anyway, that's not Ecto's fault. Kudos to Adriaan on a job well done.

ecto goes wysiawyg 08/27/2004 01:34 PM

ecto, the blogging client developed by Adriaan at my company Kula has just released the beta of the next version which has "What You See Is Almost What You Get" (wysiawyg). This means that you can now do things like drag, drop, resize images into posts. You can also create links, change font information and lots of other stuff without looking at or dealing with html. (More info on the ecto blog.) ecto 2.0 has a bunch of other cool features. Adriaan says it should be ready for general release of the OS X version in about two weeks. Until then... gloat.. gloat...

ecto Makes Me Happy Again

ecto Makes Me Happy Again 03/14/2005 05:09 PM

Adriaan changed ecto so that it works with Drupal's input filters better, and after finally getting around to downloading and testing it I must say, it works like a charm. The caveat being you have to name your input filter either "Textile" or "Markdown" and if you do something like chain the filters in Drupal so that both work in one filter then it obviously won't know, etc. But for sites like this where I've named the filter after what it is, it's golden.

So, thank you, Adriaan. Smiling

And for Mr. Walker's statements about the blogapi.module I'll happily start filing bug reports on it as I figure out what's wrong. It wouldn't take much effort at all to get this working properly and then, well, sheer bliss when it does. Smiling

Both ecto 1.0 RC4 and Fee dDemon 1.10 RC5a were released yesterday, which is good timing since the developers of ecto and I have been working to enable ecto as "Blog This" tool in FeedDemon (thanks, Alex!). This adds to the list of desktop blog publishing tools which FeedDemon already auto-detects:

If you'd prefer to post directly to your blog from FeedDemon, instructions are available for several blogging packages:BTW, if you're not sure how to blog from FeedDemon, all you need to do is right-click a news item in FeedDemon's news item list and select "Blog this News Item."

Ecto has upload video dialog

Ecto has upload video dialog 06/09/2004 05:54 AM
Blogging tool supports movie uploads.

A weblogging tool, Ecto, has a new feature: Movie upload. It offers users an option to indicate how an uploaded movie is used in the weblog (blog) entry. There are two options: Ecto creates a link to the movie inside your blog entry. The second option: the movie is then inserted right into your blog entry. [Roland Tanglao's Weblog]

Congrats to Adriaan - this seems hot!

Now we gotta get it available on a PC!

Thanks, Bloggies! BB wins best group
bl0g, and bl0g of the year!
03/14/2005 05:29 PM
Xeni Jardin: Boing Boing pal Scott Beale informs us that our blog just won Group Weblog of the Year at the Bloggies. OMG! What a huge honor! Thank you, Bloggies. We honestly didn't expect this, and we are deeply moved and grateful. There were many other deserving blogs up for awards, backed by talented folks who work very hard, and we raise our collective pirate-eye-patches in their honor: check 'em all out. On behalf of my blog-mates Cory Doctorow, Mark Frauenfelder, and David Pescovitz; our wise "band manager" John Battelle; our sysadmin par excellence Ken Snider; and the rest of the team and extended family that makes Boing Boing possible -- a humble thank you. But most of all, we are grateful to you, our readers, for wasting otherwise productive time on our collective scrapbook of "wonderful things," and for pointing us to even more of those wonderful and undiscovered things each day. We're really sorry that we couldn't make it to SXSW in person to accept the award, but we hope you'll join us in celebrating in person tomorrow at ETCON ( all five of us will be in the same place for the first time). Boing Boing sprouted online a little over five years ago, from paper zine roots planted by Mark Frauenfelder and Carla Sinclair. It is a privilege to blog for you. With you, we look forward to another adventurous year of link-discuss to come. Link

Update: Holy crap! Reader Nathaneal Heasley sez, "Not only did BB win best group ‘blog, it won “blog of the year/best weblog overall” – congratulations!" For those keeping track, this is the second year in a row Boing Boing has received these two awards: Link to 2004, Link to 2005. Man. We're speechless, and overwhelmed by your generosity.
