AP - The San Jose Sharks' incredible regular season was no mistake. They're deep, fast and a little bit lucky — and they're moving ahead in the playoffs.

Annoying the sharks 07/03/2004 11:43 AM
Where I'm staying, the kids have had the Discovery Channel all morning. It's shark show after shark show. The underwater scientists wrestle them, tag them, measure them, and check their teeth for unsightly plaque. Fine, but I plan on swimming in the ocean this summer, so could we please stop annoying the sharks for a while? Thank you....

Dami en Hirst has a new show up in New York. (NYT link) The British artist (previously discussed here, here, and here) has turned away from sheep in boxes and towards photo-realist painting. His subject matter hasn't gotten any cheerier - "The Devastating Impact of Crack Cocaine" is downright frightening. Slightly more accessible is "Six Pills," which is reminiscent of his Pharmacy installation.

Snakes, Sharks and Unexpected

Snakes, Sharks and Unexpected
Associations
01/07/2004 04:29 PM

I love how the Web is full of unexpected associations that end up exposing me to new things.

After reading Don Box's post about Frank Zappa's "Baby Snakes" DVD, I immediately bought a copy on Amazon.com. I'd seen Baby Snakes years ago, and although I wasn't wild about most of the music on it (I usually love Zappa, but there's too much of his "gotta pay the bills with cheap laughs" lyrics here), I remember being completely blown away by Bruce Bickford's stunning animation.

A couple of days later the DVD arrived, and once again I was amazed by Bickford's mind-boggling work. I Googled for more about Bickford, and discovered that a documentary about him will premiere soon. Reading on, I noticed that the documentary's musical score was created by Shark Quest, a group I'd never heard of.

I figured any group that could write the score for a film about Bruce Bickford would be worth listening to, so back to Amazon.com I went. A minute later I ordered a Shark Quest CD, which I'm listening to right now - and I think it's great.

So, thanks Don, for introducing me to some new music :)

Pirates, Sharks and Moral Crusaders: Social Control in Peer–To–Peer Networks by Jörgen S. Svensson and Frank Bannister
http://firstmo nday.org/issues/issue9_6/svensson/

Abstract by Author:
File sharing in peer–to–peer (p2p) networks is a popular pastime for millions of Internet users and a source of concern for copyright holders and for many others who fear the worldwide spread of offensive and illegal content. As file sharing proliferates, the question is what can and should be done to regulate this practice. Can and should governments cooperate to develop stricter laws and regulations and invest in wide–scale international cooperation in order to arrest Internet villains? Can and should copyright holders in the music, film and software industries extend their tactics of inciting fear, by randomly threatening customers with lawsuits in which they claim millions of dollars in damages? This article explores a possible alternative, namely that of user self–regulation, and uses an empirical investigation of two different peer–to–peer networks to examine social norms in these networks and the informal social sanctions that are used to enforce these norms. The results of this investigation indicate that some self–regulation already exists and suggest that it may be possible to strengthen this self–regulation to reduce the occurrence of some types of offences. However, there is a limit to the effectiveness of peer control of illegal and antisocial activities on the Internet.

TurboTax Blues

TurboTax Blues 04/16/2004 02:16 AM

With only a few hours til the tax filing deadline, I was having problem with TurboTax.  It reported no errors so I proceeded to file it electronically, but it kept saying it couldn't do it because there were errors.  So I went back and found that some field in California tax return was not supposed to be a negative number and it should be greater than the number above.  Well, the number above came from the federal side and was negative.

After an hour of going back and forth which TurboTax really sucks at (why can't it be more like a browser and let me spawn new windows and navigate back and forth?), I finally started ripping out forms and wiping out deductions until the damn thing filed without complaining.  I am paying a bit more tax than I would have otherwise, but at least it's done and over with until next year.

Firefox Blues

Firefox Blues 07/15/2004 07:10 AM

For some reason, Firefox address bar stopped working today.  It simply stopped updating and also won't accept new URLs entered into it.  Only changes I made to the system today were latest set of Microsoft security patches and Sage, a Firefox extension which Tim Bray recently mentioned.

I uninstalled Sage but the problem persisted.  So I proceeded to uninstall all the extensions and restarted.  Still dead.  So I uninstalled Firefox 0.9.1 completely and went to the Mozilla website.  Woo.  Firefox 0.9.2 was out.  So I installed it only to find the problem still there.  Hmm.  Could it be that those five Microsoft security patches I installed today somehow disabled Firefox address bar?  I doubt it because Mozilla 1.6's address bar still works.  Has Sage got too clever and messed up some Firefox settings and failed to restore it during uninstall?

I don't have the answers yet because I don't have time to dick around just so I can point a finger at Microsoft.  I am sure there will be an uproar in no time if it is true so I am going to wait and listen.  Meanwhile, I am back on IE.

Update:

After posting, I realized that Mozilla application data was still in the Documents and Settings directory.  Wiping that out fixed the address bar.  So it looks like the problem was Sage.  That's the trouble with being extension happy.

Unlike the nasty little green dudes in that film, this Gremlin works to download music for you from Wi-Fi connections. The true name for this mobile device is the MusicGremlin, and the device’s manufacturer is in the process of offering their users access to 500,000 songs once the licensing goes through.
