pDNS suggestions

pDNS suggestions 05/04/2004 10:57 AM

Here's some specific suggestions for the pDNS from Jay.

Thanks Jay!

Simple suggestion for pDNS and FOAF (based on CNS).

Regarding the PeoplesDNS project, Joel De Gan added some comments to my De Gan Filters, Bloom Filters, Peoples DNS, and CNS post, and also asked What's the problem with FOAF? on the PeoplesDNS blog (also posted with additional comments by Marc Canter). Danny Ayers responded to Joel in Responding to Joel on FOAF.

Based on my work developing CNS for the iCite net, I wanted to suggest a way to think about how a PeoplesDNS (pDNS) based on FOAF might function:

level 0. pDNS root servers list each other (e.g., Root0 links to Root1 and vice versa, etc.). If you want / need to have more than a handful of pDNS root servers, there can also be a hierarchy of roots.

level 1. pDNS root servers list web pages (possibly some specific XHTML / XML / RDF format) that link to FOAF files (e.g., Root0 links to page1, page2, page14). These web pages effectively act like second-level DNS.

level 2. each web page that links to FOAF files also has a single link indicating the pDNS root server that lists the page (i.e., page1 is authoritatively listed by Root0, page22 is authoritatively listed by Root10).

level 3. each FOAF file links (back) to the web page that authoritatively lists it.

So, this assumes that each person has a single FOAF file, or that, if they maintain multiple FOAF files under the same "identity", they link them together within the FOAF.

With CNS, the one other notable feature is that the iCite containers (which are the equivalent to the level 2 in the above equation) can cache references to each other, thereby bypassing the need to use the root CNS server for each reference of a peer. The CNS server (level 0 and 1) is there to help account for when the level 2 information moves to different locations.

(There are a few other things about CNS that are added to this in terms of automatically redirecting / reconnecting things when they move, that functions across all four levels.)

A Good Reader Feedback Form

"Amazon's 'Suggestion Box' that appears at the bottom of every product provides a potential model for news sites to capture audience feedback. We provide a mockup of a way to capture reader feedback." [Hypergene MediaBlog]

I'm highlighting this one because this is something libraries also need to consider. Too often, we don't provide easily found links for contacting us electronically, whether it be via IM or email (in addition to the requisite phone number and location information), and we're even worse at soliciting feedback.

<rant>
In fact, I'll use this opportunity to rant about one of my biggest pet peeves lately - library blogs that don't include a link back to the library's main site, let alone include contact information. If your library has a blog, please oh please oh please make sure it has a link back to the rest of your site (and therefore the rest of the resources you make available!)! This seems like a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised how many sites forget to add this essential information.

Suggestions for a trip to Portugal?

Suggestions for a trip to Portugal? 03/17/2005 03:24 AM

I'm considering a trip to Portugal on Friday March 25.  A friend is coming with me and she has to return on Sunday April 3.  I have more flexibility and could stay on.  Some questions for Portugal veterans...

  • Is the end of March a nice time of year to be in Portugal?
  • Can one stay the whole eight days in one hotel in Lisbon and make day trips or would it be better to stay in several different places (and, if so, what are one or two favorite places)?I don't want to spend too much time in transit.
  • If we are going to be moving around, is it best to rent a car?

Thanks for the help!

The single greatest question troubling mankind at this time is "What movie should I rent ?". We are here to answer that question! What to Rent is a website linked to a computer-cluster that will recommend a movie for you to watch based upon your personality and the type of film experience you are looking for.

It doesn't require any personal information to create a profile, not even an email address. And no new password to remember. Refreshing.

They make their escape when Beruthiel's good sister, Galadriel, frees them from their prison-cell and floats them down the river in barrels ... however, they face a terrifying setback when they are found by the evil wizard Radagast. Plus, new cell-phone features, like cameras and email, should hopefully increase the level of use and penetration relative to other developed countries, which would bode favorably for tower operators' businesses.
