09/15/2004 01:39 PMSome folks from Mobile Pipeline have been out and about in North
Carolina
testing Nextel's wireless broadband test system using
Flarion's FLASH-OFDM technology that
generated so
much attention earlier this year. The reviewers are quite
impressed. They found it an adequate replacement for fixed broadband,
but (more impressively) discovered it worked almost as well in motion,
while driving around. Mobility is where the real power of wireless
broadband will be - because it will let people do things that they
simply can't do now. It's worth noting, of course, for all the talk
about WiMax, the mobile WiMax standard is still a ways away, and all
the initial deployments will only be focused on fixed offerings.
Nextel, of course, still hasn't committed to Flarion, and is known to
be testing a few other wireless broadband solutions as well (though,
with less fanfare). However, no matter what technology (or
technologies) you're betting on, it looks like real mobile wireless
broadband is on the way.

Broadband wireless could disrupt 3G,
says Analysys
12/19/2004 03:09 PMBusiness case for broadband wireless access (BWA) technologies
requires mobility to get beyond low-margin fixed Internet access.
Broadband wireless technologies forced to compete in the same space as
3G to avoid being marginalised as niche fixed access solutions.
Systems available now from Flarion, IPWireless and ArrayComm all offer
mobility and will be joined by WiMAX (802.16) and MobileFi (802.20).
Vendors still face big challenges in selling to mobile operators as a
result of unsubstantiated performance and costs, lack of integration
with cellular base stations and limited availability of spectrum.
Early commercial business models are delivering only one percent of
the revenue per Mbyte of traditional cellular voice and messaging
services. WiMAX and MobileFi must learn from early propositions to
define winning service propositions and operator business models.
Report assesses the true capabilities of, and prospects for, a range
of alternative mobile wireless technologies. [PRWEB Dec 16, 2004]

Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure
Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure
06/03/2004 03:44 AMThe meat of the article is:
“…Wireless security recommendations: Change your system
defaults – everyone knows them.
Change the Admin and SNMP passwords. Change the IP network range. Also
change the Server Set ID (SSID). The SSID is a unique identifier for
your wireless hub/router. The default SSID is set in the factory is
definitely not unique.
Don’t broadcast the SSID. While you can change the default ID,
that does little if your hub or router broadcasts that SSID.
Enable Wireless Encryption. WEP or something similar can be
compromised, but it makes it significantly more difficult to
compromise your information. The larger the key length, the better.
Enable Shared Key Authentication. The default Open System setting lets
anyone connect to your network with very minimal effort.
Change your SNMP Community String. Create a Community String like it
is a strong password.
Enable MAC Address Codes. Again, this makes it more difficult for a
hacker to compromise your home network.
Set Wireless LAN cards to Infrastructure Mode. Most cards have the
default Ad Hoc mode, which is less secure.
Don’t rely only on the broadband firewall. A firewall at your
home’s Internet entry point is critical. However, you should
still have personal firewalls on all computers on your network, in
case something makes it through your home’s firewall or a hacker
does make it onto your network.”
