Sprint PCS Adds Wi-Fi to Salt Lake City
Airport
04/15/2004 02:14 PM

Sprint PCS will unwire Salt Lake City's airport by June: The 25th busiest airport gets Wi-Fi while many busier ones (like Chicago O'Hare) remain bereft outside of airline clubs. Sprint PCS has bilateral roaming agreements with a few providers, but doesn't resell access yet to aggregators, and has only a handful of locations in their own Wi-Fi network. They charge $10 per day with plans as high as $50 per month for month-to-month unlimited access....

Mayor of Salt Lake City is an idiot

Mayor of Salt Lake City is an idiot 04/20/2004 07:25 AM
The Mayor of Salt Lake City is opposed to municipal Internet projects, because the Internet is bad for your quality of life and deprives you of fresh air.
"I just don't see the social good in using taxpayer money to fund a network that provides more television and bandwidth for illegally downloading files," he said. "We should spend money on getting people fit, rather than deteriorating their quality of life with higher bandwidth to surf the Net."

Sprint PCS to pay for, roll out airport Wi-Fi in Kansas City: As with many other airport situations, the company with the largest deal wins the contract, even though I believe that's not in the airport's best interest as a general policy. Sprint PCS will pay for the equipment, but the airport will eventually own it. The cost per day: $9.95. Sprint PCS hasn't announced unlimited monthly usage plans yet; they have said they will resell access to their network to others. The expense to build out the airport's Wi-Fi wasn't released....

Detroit's salt mine

Detroit's salt mine 04/04/2005 01:18 PM
David Pescovitz: There's a 1,400 acre working salt mine a quarter-mile underneath the city of Detroit. (Some citizens are complaining that blasting in the mine is damaging their homes. Link< /a>) The mining began at the start of the 20th century. Public tours were available in the 1980s but the Detroit Salt Company current "Public Tour Policy" is simply that they don't offer them. From a Detroit News article:
History Salt Images 9 Mules, lowered by rope down the narrow shaft into the mine, were used in the early mining operations. Once down in the mines, they stayed there until they died.

Workers decended in a two-level elevator in which six men pressed face-to-face during the long ride down.

Getting equipment down into the massive cavern provided many problems. Pickup trucks, jeeps and large trucks had to be cut up or disassembled and lowered down the shaft piece by piece, to be reassembled in shop areas below. Large dump truck tires too big for the shaft had to be compressed and bound before they would fit down the opening.

In a 1925 Detroit News article, miner Joel Payton told about his salt mine job. "The only dirty part of this job is going down to work," Mr. Payton explained.

Wieliczka Salt Mine

Wieliczka Salt Mine 04/04/2005 06:25 PM
David Pescovitz: My earlier post about Detroit's salt mine reminded underground explorer Julia Solis of the magnificent and massive Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland. From the Salt Mine Tourist site:
17 Kaplica Sw Antoniego Hidden below the town, situated on 9 levels, reaching 327 m deep Wieliczka underground is nearly 300 km of galleries and 3000 chambers. 3,5 km route 64-135 m below ground level is available for tourists. Magnificent chapels, captivating underground lakes, original tools and equipment, traces of mining works give the comprehension about people's fight against the elements, their work, passion and beliefs. Wieliczka miners left lots of salt carvings and murals. After the sightseeing, tourists can rest in the chamber complex 125 m underground where they can find souvenir shops, restaurant and a post office.

Salt Spring Coffee Morning

Salt Spring Coffee Morning 04/25/2004 12:28 PM
A good morning to you; I’m having one. Genx is (finally) passing almost the whole XML test suite, a nice Bach cantata fills the air (Leonhardt’s take on BWV12, Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen), and I’m drinking a damn fine cup of coffee. The coffee’s from Salt Spring Coffee, which is substantially better than the beans from the local Starbucks. Salt Spring gets a tip o’ the hat because I was going to write about them sometime last year but their Web site was totally IE-centric and I couldn’t use it, so I sent them a note pointing this out, and just checked it out and now it’s fixed; quite decent in fact. We lean to the Fre nch Roast, but some might find this blend a little too exuberantly dark. If you like good coffee, there’s no substitute for buying beans, keeping them in the fridge, getting a good grinder and doing it right. I remain convinced that the classic Melitta pour-through system can’t be beat, and also convinced that a well-done Norteamericano filter coffee is the equal of any fancy espresso-based drink, and also has twice the caffeine, which is good. Not that you’d want to give up all those nice espresso drinks, there’s a time and place for everything. When I finish the coffee and knock down a couple more test cases, we’ll go do some gardening. Life is good.

04/15/2005 12:46 PM
New statistics released by analysts today indicate video game sales jumped 32 percent in the U.S. during March. With more than 532,000 units sold, Sony’s Gran Turismo 4 led the game sales for March. It was followed by MVP Baseball 2005 from Electronic Arts, which sold nearly 338,000 units. Most analysts expect U.S. software sales to grow about 5 percent in 2005, driven by growing sales for handheld devices and the increased availability of gaming consoles. Sony sold 620,000 PlayStation Portables and 1.1 million units of software after releasing the PSP on March 24. By comparison, Nintendo’s DS has sold 428,000 units this year, analysts said. The DS, which costs $100 less than the PSP, launched last year. The supply of Sony's PlayStation 2 console continued to improve, analysts said, with 495,000 sold in the month, compared with 227,000 units of Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox and 94,000 units of Nintendo's GameCube. Microsoft has acknowledged the Xbox is in short supply, which some retailers fear may continue through the year as the company prepares to launch its next-generation console later this year.
