Use Your AT&T Phone to Identify Music 04/15/2004 11:42 AM

JOEL JOHNSON -- AT&T Wireless has announced a new service that helps you identify songs with your cellphone. After dialing '#ID' and playing the phone close to the music source for 15 seconds, customers will receive a text message with the name and artist of the song. Using the Musicphone...

Music On The Mobile Phone

Music On The Mobile Phone 05/06/2004 12:55 PM
Understanding the mobile music market these days seems a bit challenging. While the industry is surprised, but thrilled, that kids who won't pay for downloadable music online are shelling out much more money on snippets of songs for downloadable ringtones, it's unclear if that market can last. While the going is good, however, wireless carriers are starting to more actively push for "ringback" tones, which are what people hear when they call you and are waiting for you to pick up the phone (instead of the standard computerized ringing you normally hear through the phone). While, in the past, some have found this confusing (you don't expect to hear music when you call someone, you expect to hear "ring ring"), ringback tones are apparently tremendously successful in places like South Korea. Still, if you want to be even more confused, a new study found that most people have no interest in paying to download music to their phone - no matter how much it costs. It's not that they're against paying, as many would pay for other content on their phone, it's just that they don't want to pay for music. So, the question is whether or not this is consistent with reality? Are these people who say they won't pay for music on their phones not buying ringtones? Or do they somehow consider ringtones (and potentially ringback tones) different than "music," and therefore worth shelling out? Also, a single snapshot may not be useful. People may not want to buy ringtones until they see that all of their friends have done so already. Still, the large number of people who seem very against the idea of paying for music for their mobile phone might be a warning sing that things like ringtones and ringback tones are something of a fad that may not last.

Motorola E725 Music Phone

Motorola E725 Music Phone 03/24/2005 11:22 AM

moto_e725.jpgSo it wasn't the iTunes phone, but the Motorola E725 still looks dandy, with an EV-DO connection, a MiniSD slot for up to 1GB of storage, a built-in FM transmitter for broadcasting your music to your car or home stereo, as well as a normally-sized 3.5mm miniJack connector for use with standard headphones. Presuming they got the interface right, it looks like a winner. Of course, you won't be able to get your hands on one for a while—likely the end of this year, on Verizon or Sprint.

If this is how Motorola makes a vanilla music phone, how are they going to impress with an iTunes model?

alcatel_ot2853.jpgHere's a little number I missed at CeBIT: the Alcatel OT-S853 music phone, an EDGE-capable Bluetooth candybar model that supports MP3 playback. The unique feature—besides the dedicated music playback control buttons, which all music phones should have—is the integrated speaker in the top. I don't know exactly how often you'll need to explain the subtle differences
between Private Eyes- and H2O-era Hall and Oates in public, but now you can dazzle your friends without making them double dip your headphones.

Price and release dates are unknown, as are supported music formats.

au_w31s.jpgSony Ericsson will be releasing the AU W31S music phone for Japanese mobile carrier KDDI. The phone shares a passing resemblance to the Motorola SLVR series, although the day-glo orange is certainly unique (it's also available in white). The AU W31S will launch in Japan on April 10th, supporting ATRAC3, MP3, and WMA, among other formats.

Don't expect this model to ever hit the states.

"At the very center of identity theft, for example, is the mistaken concept that it is about identity when in fact it is really about theft. While it doesn't feel good knowing someone has acquired the means to attempt to impersonate you, what REALLY feels bad is when they use that information to drain your bank account. It isn't the impersonation, itself, that does the damage, either; it is the bank teller giving all your money to the bad guy that really hurts. So forget about protecting identity. How do we hang onto our loot?"

$100,000 effort to identify foul stench
in Las Vegas
07/31/2004 08:29 PM
For the last ten years, a mysterious nasty smell has been coming out of storm drains on Fremont Street in Las Vegas. Officials there want to spend $100k to track down the source of the vile odor.
The stink emanating from the storm sewers has plagued the area around the Fremont Street pedestrian mall for a decade, and every time the city has thrown time, effort and deodorizer at the problem, the "sewer-type" aroma has just returned.

On Wednesday, City Council is to consider a $100,000 US consulting contract aimed at finding the source of the olfactory offence.

A tiny closed-circuit television system would be used to examine the downtown storm drains, smoke would be pumped into the system to identify outlets and dye would be used to follow water flows.
