Microsoft Throwing Its Weight Around
Microsoft Throwing Its Weight Around
12/19/2004 02:57 PMYeah, I know. What's new about that?
MS lawyers jumped all over the administrators of digital.forest demanding that they
immediately shut down the MacSlash site because someone
posted what appeared to be a valid Longhorn serial number in a comment
to a post there. (Story here.) From the logs, the MacSlash guys figured that that
comment was accessed exactly once in the eight months it was there. By
MSN's own search bot.
Chuck Goolsbee, head geek at digital.forest, responded to the
hounds:
A short lesson in human nature... Try asking nicely. I realize that
owners of intellectual property feel the need to enter into
discussions with lawyers blazing, but I know from long experience that
attack begets defence, whereas courtesy begets respect. If you look at
this situation objectively, I'm sure you will realize that the site
owners have not acted in any malicious way. The content in question
was posted to the bulletin board by some anonymous user. So, rather
than using terms like "Demand for Immediate Take-Down" why don't you
try something like "Please remove copyright infringing content".
You will likely be amazed at how much better it works.
(I've always liked that Chuck!)
Of course, Ben from MacSlash edited the serial number out of the
comment as soon as he realized it was there. The funny thing is that
now that it's gone from MacSlash, it can still be seen in Google's cach
e of the page. I wonder how many people have seen it now.

The difference between throwing a bullet
and shooting it out of a gun
05/18/2004 01:24 AMI've started trying to exercise more regularly for the past couple
weeks, going for a 12 mile, hilly bike ride 3 times a week. Today I
did my ride with a decent average speed and finished it in the
shortest time yet. The loop I ride has a couple 10% grades in it and I
do about 250ft of climbing through it. I was walking around the house
today feeling pretty cocky about my progress when I sat down to watch
one of my current favorite shows, The Lance
Chronicles.
On tonight's episode they followed Lance Armstrong through his
european training. One of his regular rides was a 4 1/2 hour, 30 mile
climb from the flats high into the mountains, going straight up. It
turns out he climbs over 13,000ft in that single ride. When I was in
marathon shape, I did a few hikes where I would gain about 6,000ft in
a single day from basecamp to summit, and Lance is doing more than
twice that. As a training ride.
I'm thinking he's a shoe-in for this year's Tour.

Man Angry At Mobile Phone Service,
Starts Throwing Phones
05/14/2004 03:14 PMThese days, with things like number portability around, if you don't
really like your mobile phone provider, you can simply change
providers. Apparently, that wasn't what a man in North Dakota wanted,
though. He went to the local Verizon Wireless store, pissed off about
something, and when yelling at employees (his original intention)
didn't satisfy him, he started to
fling mobile phones around the store causing $2,000
worth of damages and injuring (not badly) an employee. Of course, you
have to wonder about his claim that he only intended to yell at
employees. Before he started his fling fest he apparently took off
his shirt (?!?) and
put on safety goggles. Amusingly, this was
done at a Verizon Wireless store - and Verizon Wireless tends to get
some of the best marks for customer service.

MS to Thailand: Please don't go
MS to Thailand: Please don't go
02/10/2004 02:49 AMGood article on CNET on how Microsoft is under pressure
in the Asian market.
Microsoft has always maintained a 'one-price' policy, meaning
Windows costs the same no matter where you go, regardless of local
currency or economic conditions. This makes Microsoft products
very expensive in some nations. Now, with more governments
turning to open-source, Microsoft is striking a deal with the Thai
government, and looking to do the same with others:
The "entry-level" version of Windows was created to allow
Microsoft to participate in the Thailand ICT Ministry's program
without adjusting its policy of charging the same price for Windows
and Office no matter where in the world they are sold, Microsoft said
Monday. The software was provided at a cost of 1,500 baht, or about
$40, compared with the usual price of several hundred
dollars.
So basically they're creating a crippled version of Office and
Windows in order to stay competitive, so these governments are paying
less, but also getting less. One wonders how long this strategy will
work for them. Microsoft claims that Linux isn't a competitor, but
with the number of user-friendly Linux distributions on the rise, free will
become an increasingly tough price to beat, especially in countries
where XP and Office will set you back the local equivalent of $3,000.

Transgender in Thailand, online.
Transgender in Thailand, online.
04/19/2004 09:45 AMFollowing up on
last week's post on the subject, BoingBoing reader Rachel writes:
The Thai word translated as "transvestite" or "shemale" is khatoey,
also spelled katoey, kathoey and several other ways. The word doesn't
really have the negative ring of those two English words. And, trust
me, those English words do have a negative ring. Call any TS woman in
the US a "shemale" and she'll be deeply insulted 98% of the time. Very
few crossdressers in the US like the term "transvestite". If you're
looking for an English word to describe these women, "transsexual" is
probably closest; "pre-op transsexual" or "non-op transsexual"
is possibly more accurate, though contentious.
Probably the best site around to actually get to know the khatoey is
Andrew Matzner's Transgender
in Thailand site . I also recommend looking at
my site for a more general view of transgender life in Asia.
You might also read my
journal about getting SRS in Thailand.
I think that the site you linked to -- Alcazar's -- is primarily a
club in Pattaya. The contest is quite glamorous and highly-esteemed,
but that is because Alcazar's itself is the most famous kathoey
cabaret in Thailand. I think that the contest is primarily a promotion
for the club; it isn't so much about Hollywood dreams as it is about
helping secure Alcazar's place in the drag universe. Finally, a
plea: I hope that you are interested in the khatoey women as people,
not as sex objects; your entry on BoingBoing seems to indicate that
you are curious about their roles in society and how society views
them, not in prodding them with a virtual stick as so many others
have. If you are in fact approaching them with respect, then you have
my heartfelt thanks.
