Market Failure

Market Failure 09/19/2004 11:31 PM
Right now we are encountering an irritating failure of the free market. We had some ductwork done a couple of months ago, and have a chunk of missing drywall in our living room. There are some other bits and pieces of drywalling that need doing here and there around the house, too. No problem, call up an expert, right? Wrong. At this moment in Vancouver, no drywaller can be bothered to take on a job that’s only one or two days’ work; they’re all coasting along doing ten-thousand-dollar-and-up mansion renovations. Drywalling is tricky, irritating, messy work best left to professionals... but it looks like we’re going to be taking it on. At any Vancouver social gathering, the general unavailability of tradespeople is a reliable conversation-starter. Hey kids, consider staying away from that expensive and arduous college education and taking up a trade; for damn sure your job won’t get outsourced to another continent.

Google to IPO with market value of about

Google to IPO with market value of about
$12b
01/07/2004 06:11 PM
Bloomberg reports that Google has hired Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs to manage its initial public offering this year.
The sale by Google, the world's most used Internet search engine, would be the biggest IPO since CIT Group Inc.'s $4.87 billion deal in July 2002. It "will certainly be the deal of the year,'' said Sanford Robertson, who founded San Francisco-based investment bank Robertson, Stephens & Co. before starting private- equity firm Francisco Partners LP. About a third of Mountain View, California-based Google may be sold in the IPO, giving the company a market value of about $12 billion, the bankers said. The company will probably register the shares for sale with the Securities and Exchange Commission this month and sell them by April, they said.

Blogging the Market

Blogging the Market 01/11/2004 11:20 AM
George Dafermos has posted a paper titled "Blogging the Market: How Weblogs are turning corporate machines into real conversations." Given that nothing is truly comprehensive, this paper edges in that direction. It begins, in the Abstract, with these words and in this tone: Weblogs, in other words, envisage a hierarchy circumvention mechanism, which empowers knowledgeable employees to indulge in conversations with the market rather than communicating solely by means of marketing pitches and press releases and it ends like this: YOU CORPORATE BUREAUCRAT, STANDARDISED VOICE IN THE MARKET WILL BE ASSIMILATED OR ANNIHILATED. THE CHOICE IS YOURS: SPEAK WITH A...

IDC: MP3 market 'booming' 09/21/2004 09:02 AM
Market research firm IDC on Tuesday reported that broad consumer acceptance of MP3 players is expected to grow the market from 12.5 million units sold last year to more than 50 million units in 2008 -- a compound annual growth rate of 20 percent. IDC predicts the market will generate almost $58 billion in revenues by 2008, and expects that Apple, which it describes as "a portable jukebox market leader," will see increased competition from vendors offering devices based on 1.0-inch and smaller hard drives.
