eBay initiative unites industry leaders

e-waste
01/06/2005 05:56 PM
eBay today launched its Rethink Initiative that helps consumers and businesses learn about the different e-waste alternatives, such as recycling and refurbishing, and makes it easy to put this knowledge into action. The new program acts to coordinate efforts by industry leaders Apple, Gateway, HP, IBM, Intel Corp. and Ingram Micro with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the non-profit Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service, among other participants, and millions of eBay users to confront the problem of e-waste - unused or obsolete computers that may pose environmental hazards when disposed of in landfills. The centerpiece of the program, which was launched at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, is the new website designed for education and communication, www.ebay.com/rethink. "eBay's millions of users can be a powerful force for good," said Meg Whitman, eBay president and CEO. "The Rethink Initiative will educate consumers on how to properly dispose of or recycle the millions of tons of e-waste they confront each year. We're extremely excited about the positive role eBay's user community will play in confronting this environmental dilemma." Industry analyst Gartner estimates that in the U.S. alone, about 133,000 PCs per day are currently being retired and replaced by their original owners. These systems may contain hazardous materials, such as plastic, lead, cadmium, chromium, and mercury that need to be handled in an environmentally responsible manner. Yet Americans' understanding of recycling and reuse options remains limited - only about 10 percent of unwanted PCs in the U.S. are recycled, according to the Grass Roots Recycling Network.

Intel regains lead in chip battle

Intel regains lead in chip battle 08/30/2004 01:21 AM
While Apple and IBM continue to struggle with G5 yields and production, Intel Corp. announced today that it has created a memory chip using transistors that are considerably smaller than those powering today's state-of-the-art chips, allowing for more memory and greater performance. As a result of their smaller size, more of the tiny switches can be packed into a single piece of silicon without having to increase the size of the chip. Products built with the new technology are on track for delivery in 2005, Intel said. The gate — or switching mechanism — of each transistor on the new chip is about 30 percent smaller than those in use today, Intel said. About 100 of them could fit inside a human red blood cell. Within each transistor are “sleep transistors” that physically turn off the electrical current to areas of a chip that aren't being used. As a result, power consumption drops, and subsequently, decreasing heat output and allowing batteries to hold longer charges. News of the new transistors contradicts fears that the semiconductor industry's pace of development has been slowing recently.

Notebook makers are currently preparing their lineups for the new AMD Turion 64-bit notebooks, sources in the Taiwan notebook industry observed. A February 5 article stated that Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer and Asustek Computer are increasing their respective orders for AMD-based notebooks this year

The Difference Between Online Content
And Broadcast Content

Major League Baseball made news last year for claim ing to own all in-progress game data - saying they were going to go after websites that reported what was happening at a game in real-time. It didn't matter that the law is pretty clear that you can't copyright facts - MLB believes that just presenting the data is a "rebroadcast" of the game. That said, I guess it's no surprise to hear that they now believe that web audio and video broadcasts of games should work the same way as television broadcasts with a content provider paying a huge upfront fee for the rights to the games, and then telling them they can make it back in ad revenue and subscription fees. Of course, the various internet sites they've approached with this plan have been laughing them out the door, and pointing out that they're not television stations, and they just want to provide something useful to their users - but aren't going to lose money to do so. While MLB has been at the forefront of offering streaming video and audio, it appears they still look on this as a broadcast medium, and not the interactive medium it actually is. They're doing their best to squeeze more money out of existing fans, rather than attract new fans, which is dangerous for the future of the sport. Not only do you anger your biggest fans, you also make it less likely that you're going to pick up new fans.

Bi-Partisan Environmental Improvement?

Bi-Partisan Environmental Improvement? 04/24/2004 01:55 AM
A new study (in a biggish PDF) from PRI states that most environmental indicators in the United States have improved dramatically since the 1970's regardless of the political party that controls the White House. Notably: "CO (Carbon monoxide) levels were the lowest recorded during the past 20 years" (EPA, 2002, pg 48), ambient lead levels have fallen 98% between 1976 and 2002 (pg 46), and sulfur dioxide has fallen 70% since 1976 (pg 44). Greenfleet is an Australian environmental organisation who aim to help citizens offset their own greenhouse gas emmissions. Their Tree Totaller (Australian-based, but I'm sure conversions are easy) works out how many trees you need to offset your annual emmissions, based on private car, home energy use and flights. It's a very neat little flash-app, and at the end it lets you chose to "subscribe" to Greenfleet so they'll plant the necessary number of trees for you. I owe 44 trees, for only AU$103 a year.

Environmental Education Exchange
http://www.eeexchange.org/

A Non-for-profit organization providing programs and services for the advancement of environmental literacy in the Unuted States and mexico. Since 1991, the Environmental Education Exchange has developed a diversity of environmental education programs and materials. The varied topics and themes have included water conservation, recycling and waste reduction, biodiversity, endangered species, land use issues, commercialism and the environment, air quality, Sonoran Desert ecology, solar energy, mining and minerals, science literacy, special multicultural/border programs, and more. The majority of resulting programs and materials are available free to educators or other intended audiences. Because the Exchange specializes in program design (and is not primarily a program provider), these products generally are distributed or presented by partner agencies and organizations for which they were developed. OCLC Environmental Scan Now Available

OCLC Environmental Scan Now Available 01/09/2004 10:11 PM

The 2003 OCLC Environmental Scan: Pattern Recognition

"From the document, 'The 2003 OCLC Environmental Scan: Pattern Recognition report was produced for OCLC’s worldwide membership to examine the significant issues and trends impacting OCLC, libraries, museums, archives and other allied organizations, both now and in the future. The scan provides a high-level view of the information landscape, intended both to inform and stimulate discussion about future strategic directions.'

Intro and Flash Graphic of Several Stats Contained in the Report ||| D irect to Full Text" [Resourceshelf]

I saw a piece of this report last month and even had the chance to provide some feedback and comments that made it into the final version. I have not yet had time to read the whole thing, but what I did see was pretty solid and does provide a good overview of current and future issues for libraries. Naturally, I agree with a lot of what's in the report, although I did have an interesting dialogue with the author, which is where some of my quotes come from (mostly in the Future Fr amework section).

Some of the quotes that are not from me but could be because of their "shifted-ness" include:

 • "Wi-Fi, short for wireless fidelity, is a technology that has captured the heart of the information consumer and is filling tables at coffee shops across the world.... Jupiter Research reports that 6 percent of U.S. consumers have used Wi-Fi services in a public place. Why not make the library the first public place for the next 50 percent?

 • The high school students interviewed for the scan told us that the technology tool they wanted most was a PDA device that 'contained all the information they needed to do their work.' Vendors are responding. Several vendors now offer PDAs under $100, making it possible for the information consumer to get a PDA for about the price of two video games. Personalization, alert technology and other PDA-friendly information services have brought a world of convenience to the business user. The information consumer is ready for libraries to bring 'all the information they need to do their work' to their PDAs." [Security, authentication, and Digital Rights Management (DRM), p. 5]

 • "What if libraries and OCLC and all the other players in the world of structured access to information erased the organizational charts, the artificial separations of content, the visible taxonomies, and the other edifices real or otherwise built to bring order and rationality to what we perceive as a chaotic universe? What if we built an infosphere rich in content and context that was easy to use, ubiquitous and integrated, designed to become woven into the fabric of people’s lives; people looking for answers, meaning and authoritative, trustable results? How do we take information, information sources and our expertise to the user, rather than making the user come to our spheres?" [Future Frameworks, p. 5]

It will be interesting to gauge the reaction to this document and to see if OCLC can successfully use it as a springboard to implementing the frameworks discussed (or helping their members to implement those frameworks). I hope they do a follow-up in a year to evaluate its impact on the organization and/or libraries. Personally, an API into WorldCat that could be used as an ISBN lookup service would be pretty high on my list in terms of integration into the web in the user's infosphere (hint, hint).

OCLC is soliciting feedback about the report, so feel free to contribute your thoughts to them.
