the death of lincoln

the death of lincoln 06/09/2004 06:58 PM
the death of lincoln. Originally from June 1865. "The murder of President Lincoln aroused a feeling of regret deeper than was ever before known in our history. Men and papers who had opposed his policy and vilified him personally, now vied with his adherents and friends in lauding the rare wisdom and goodness which marked his conduct and character." Hmmmm... sounds familiar.

Web site offers day-by-day look at Lincoln's life: You see, if you don't blog your life today, someone is going to do it for you 150 years from now.

Visitors can find out what he was doing on a particular date (he spent January 3, 1845, successfully arguing a case before the Illinois Supreme Court) or by searching on key words ("slave" produces 156 results). The site also lets you browse through the years randomly.

One of the sad things about aging is that one's fantasies shift from sex to real estate.  My personal suburban Boston fantasy has long been to move to Lincoln, Massachusetts and live in a house up against the conservation land where I can bike and cross-country ski with what seems to be a growing population of dogs.  People pay $2 million for the privilege of living in an environment free of Republicans, people of color (as the good liberals of Lincoln would call them), or generally anyone who can't afford a 1-5 acre chunk of property a 20-minute drive from Harvard Square (and conveniently just five minutes from Hanscom Field where one can keep an airplane or helicopter).  One of the side benefits of being in a 100% rich community is that all of the dogs running around the conservation land are friendly to people and mostly quite playful with other dogs.  Because there is no white trash there are no white trash dogs, unlike trying to bike through the Lynn Woods, for example, where the first few hundred yards can be a gauntlet of Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, etc.  The typical dog met in Lincoln, by contrast, is a Golden Retriever or Lab.

Paradise was lost during my trip to the South, however, and it seems that there are now signs around the Mt. Misery conservation land banning off-leash dogs.

Vivato Deploys at Lincoln University 11/03/2003 02:35 PM
Vivato's switches save years and dollars at university: This installation would have been challenging for conventional wireless LANs, the press release notes, because the university spans many buildings across 400 acres. Many of the 40 buildings are historic, which probably translates into "no wiring closets" and an aging electrical physical plant. The backstory of a press release like this is that Vivato finds it necessary to promote the installation of their equipment at institutions with unique characteristics rather than announcing the sale of their gear to Fortune 5000 companies or wireless ISPs....

I'm struggling to find the relevance of PlaNetwork's "e-names." The fact that it was apparently developed by a gaggle of white guys doesn't help. The next panel is all white guys too. At least I know we'll break out of it in the session since I'll be on the mic (among others)..

That's ONE of the reasons I'm not at Planetwork today.  But I'll be there tomorrow to challenge Reid Hoffman on his lock-in strategy with LinkedIn.  And to recruit for the FOAFnet.

Ping Tunnel 0.60 (Default branch)

Ping Tunnel 0.60 (Default branch) 04/15/2005 09:18 AM
Ping Tunnel is a tool for reliably tunneling TCP connections over ICMP echo request and reply packets (commonly known as ping requests and replies). It is useful for evading firewalls that, for whatever reason, prevent outgoing TCP connections, but allow in- and outgoing ICMP packets. The tunnel works by having a proxy run on a machine ping-able from the inside of the firewall, with the client running on the local machine from which TCP access is required.
Changes:
This release adds support for authentication, allowing users to protect access to the ptunnel proxy using a password. This release also fixes a number of small bugs, and adds a man page.

Spalding Gray Memorial at Lincoln Center
on April 13

Spalding Gray Memorial at Lincoln Center
on April 13
04/09/2004 04:01 PM
I was not surprised to learn last Sunday that the castaway husk of Spalding Gray had surfaced in the East River. We had been told by the NYPD that those who sink in New York Harbor during wintertime will rise again come spring. While I felt certain that Spalding had gone for his last swim on January 10, some others regarded my efforts to eulogize him as cruelly premature and tasteless. Their remonstrances, posted here and in personal messages to me, were often pretty cruel themselves. It's been hard. But it was also true that, in the absence of undeniable evidence, his widow Kathie couldn't guarantee his young sons Theo and Forrest that their dad would never, ever come moping back up the driveway. Indeed, given the dogged nature of hope, she couldn't utterly extinguish that vision from her own heart. As long as it flickered there, we had to await the opportunity to gather in our grief and celebrate him. Now we can. Of course, you've already begun that process virtually. Since Sunday, there has been an extraordinary stream of memorial comments posted to this blog. I have received as many more e-mails filled with the spreading contagion of his honesty and raconteur's genius for investing ordinary details with more universal magic. Having him watched him button-hole strangers for years, I'm not quite surprised by how many of you have turned up with vividly personal memories of Spalding. That he was able to weave his quirky voice and viewpoint so discernibly into your own during those encounters seems proof that the soul is not so easily contained by its original bottle of flesh. Though widely distributed, it almost feels as if there's more of Spalding in the world now than there was when he was still walking around muttering to himself. But funerals need bodies, the living as much as the dead. It's important to embrace those who share our loss with actual arms, to shed real tears on real shoulders, to praise the departed with audible voices. To that end, there will be a memorial celebration for Spalding at Lincoln Center on April 13. It will be open to the public and will feature performances and reminiscences by many of his friends, including Philip Glass and Lou Reed. I'll let you know more about this event as plans develop. Meanwhile, I am still collecting your postings and e-mails into a book I will give his family. It already provides beautiful evidence that Spalding was himself the source of many Perfect Moments and that, however grim the end of his life, he leaves a legacy of joyous truth to his sons. In one of the comments to my original post regarding his regarding his disappearance, one of you quoted some lines from the Dylan Thomas poem, "And Death Shall Have No Dominion." It felt so uncannily appropriate that I want to post it here in its entirety. Death doesn't have Spalding Gray. We do. And death shall have no dominion. Dead men naked they shall be one With the man in the wind and the west moon; When their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone, They shall have stars at elbow and foot; Though they go mad they shall be sane, Though they sink through the sea they shall rise again; Though lovers be lost love shall not; And death shall have no dominion. And death shall have no dominion. Under the windings of the sea They lying long shall not die windily; Twisting on racks when sinews give way, Strapped to a wheel, yet they shall not break; Faith in their hands shall snap in two, And the unicorn evils run them through; Split all ends up they shan't crack; And death shall have no dominion. And death shall have no dominion. No more may gulls cry at their ears Or waves break loud on the seashores; Where blew a flower may a flower no more Lift its head to the blows of the rain; Though they be mad and dead as nails, Heads of the characters hammer through daisies; Break in the sun till the sun breaks down, And death shall have no dominion....

Red Versus Blue is a series of comedy short films made by scripting avatars in the game Half Life Halo and recording screen-movies of the results, then adding voice-over and sound-effects, a process called "Machinema." The first two episodes of the next season will be screened at Lincoln Center on January 3. That's pretty cool -- it's almost as if Homestar Runner came to Carnegie Hall.
We are extremely pleased to announce that Red vs Blue Season 2 will debut on January 3, 2004 at the Lincoln Center in New York City. We're extremely honored to be invited back to this prestigious venue and we hope that any Red vs Blue fan in the area will make it to the 9:30 PM show. The plan is to show Season One in its entirety and then show Episodes One and Two of Season Two. Also, the entire cast and crew of Season One will be on hand for the event, which is a milestone in itself -- we have never been in the same place at the same time. So, if you want your RvB DVD signed by the cast, this may be your one and only shot.
