First thoughts about Panther: Address
Book...
10/29/2003 12:10 AM

Address Book under OSX has never been a particularly impressive application, but it's just about worked as a system wide piece of kit. Panther brings with it a number of changes and improvements and a couple of nasty unprovements too. There's some functionality here that I can't categorically say wasn't in Jaguar, so bear with me if I foul something up:

  • Every card in Address Book can have a picture associated with it. This is not new. However previously you were just able to pick up a picture and drop it whole onto the hole allocated for it, where it would sit greatly diminished in size and essentially unusable. The version in Panther introduces the lovely resize and crop functionality that's been in iChat AV since the beta. Very nice indeed;
  • The edit functionality now lasts when you change cards which is a good change. Previously editing an card meant entering it individually and clicking on the edit button. Now the edit button will remain depressed until you release it. It's not the UI approach I'd have taken, but it pretty much works;
  • The edit interface itself is a bit of a dog's dinner. The previously understated and probably not very clear grey + and - buttons have now become garishly red and green, the edit screen radically indents everything and moves stuff around to the extent that it's difficult to see what's going on and where your information has been moved to. An approach that highlighted the information rather than the labels might have been better;
  • Also noticed for the first time is the 'send updates' functionality - which I'm sure has been there for ages. It appears to be a way of informing everyone in your address book of any and all changes to your personal address card. I'm interested, but too scared, to see how this might work...

Useful Applescripts for coding PHP in

Useful Applescripts for coding PHP in
BBEdit
12/12/2003 07:48 PM
At work I spend a lot of time coding, which means I also spend a lot of time using BBEdit . Thankfully it's a fantastic program with excellent Applescript integration. As a PHP coder, I thought I'd share some of the great Applescripts that are out there to enhance your coding experience, and hopefully save you some time. VoidFil lPHP This is a PHP code completion script. Type the beginning of function name, hit F1 (or whatever key you've assigned it to), and it provides a list a potential matches (e.g. type html and you can choose from html_entity_decode, htmlentities or htmlspecialchars). Search php.net for selection It does what it says on the tin. Highlight a PHP function or keyword, hit the assigned key combination, and it fires up a browser window and searches through the manual on php.net for the function or keyword. Very useful if you've not got a PHP reference book handy. PHP Syntax Check Written by John Gruber (a former Bare Bones developer, so he obviously knows a thing or two), this flexible script can scan your document for PHP parsing errors (highlighting the problematic lines). The script can also replace the built-in HTML Document Syntax command, so it can check the syntax of your HTML also. Pretty nifty huh? What other Applescripts make your BBEdit life easier?

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
02/13/2004 05:52 AM
One of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out - and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site, it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's pissing off retailers, who don't want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.

Repeat After Me: A Book is a Book

Repeat After Me: A Book is a Book 07/13/2004 03:49 PM
This NY Times piece compares Amazon.com with Napster. Huh? The odd logic is that used books sold online are cutting into sales of new books, which may or may not be true. But the Napster comparison is ludicrous for some obvious reasons, including the fact that an actual book is not a digitized song, and that if I'm holding a specific book you are not holding the same copy. The Times piece is about the "doctrine of first sale," which basically says that once a work is sold, it's gone from the creator's control. The purchaser of the item can resell it, give it away or throw it in the garbage, if that's what he wants to do. Copyright holders have never liked this very much, and I can sympathize. Visual artists who see escalating prices for works they sold at bargain when they were starting out tend to really not like this situation. But the doctrine of first sale is vastly better than the alternative. The idea that the copyright owner should get a cut every time a book changes hands is a Pandora's box. It's also just what copyright industry would like to see happen, and that's what the entertainment industry is trying to create with its various digital restrictions technologies. The industry wants a pay-per-use world of arts and letters. Resist. And let's please not equate selling a used book with copyright infringement.
