New Track for Public Librarians at
Internet Librarian!

New Track for Public Librarians at
Internet Librarian!
02/01/2005 10:09 PM

Michael Stephens is organizi ng a track just for public librarians at October's Internet Librarian conference. This is most welcome news because PLA books sessions at its conferences too far in advance to address "current" trends, while most public librarians I know feel LITA is beyond them. I think we can fill a real niche here, especially since Michael plans to focus on practical advice and tips, not theory. Even better, he's aiming the sessions at small- to medium-sized libraries, those that need this the most.

He's already got a few ideas that he wants to implement, but he's also asking for comments, suggestions, offers, and discussion from all public librarians. Got a topic that intrigues you? Heard about a "top tech trend" but you're not sure how to actually implement it? Have some ideas of your own? Share them all over on Michael's post. This is your chance to help build a track that addresses YOUR needs. Help us prove that if you build it [the public librarian track], they will come!

Then make sure you register for Internet Librarian (October 24-26, 2005). :-)

Pentagon Can't Even Keep Track Of The

Pentagon Can't Even Keep Track Of The
Systems That Keep Track Of Stuff
07/08/2004 12:33 PM
The Pentagon certainly isn't known for efficiency in their business processes, and no one ever said they needed to be run in the same manner as a profitable business, but the fact that they can't even track the thousands of different databases and logistics systems that are supposed to keep track of all of their purchases and assets is a bit worrisome. At the very least it's a huge recipe for fraud, with plenty of already greedy enough defense contractors clearly abusing the system for great profit to themselves -- at the expense of our own tax dollars.

One of the more fascinating moments of today's White House press conference with Bush and Allawi came when the president, who claims to pay scant attention to public opinion polling (that's something Clintons do), referred to "right track/wrong track" polling in Iraq like he was George Gallup himself:

Chicago's public sculpture can't be
photographed by the public

Chicago's public sculpture can't be
photographed by the public
02/07/2005 02:07 AM
Cory Doctorow: Chicago spent $270 million on its Millennium Park, placing a big public sculpture by Anish Kapoor in the middle of it, bought with public money. Woe betide any member of the public who tries to photograph this sculpture, though: it's a copyrighted sculpture and Chicago is spending even more money policing Chicagoans who try to photograph it and make a record of what their tax-dollars bought.

If I were them, I'd ask for my money back. What kind of jerk sculptor sells the city a piece of public art for a public park and then demands that no one take pictures of it? Christ, they should run this guy out of town on a rail and melt the goddamned sculpture down for scrap. Then they should fire the politician who signed a purchase contract that reserved the photographic rights and run him out of town on the same rail. Between the artist's greed and the procurement officer's malfeasance, this is about the vilest display of human venality I've heard of all day.

The copyrights for the enhancements in Millennium Park are owned by the artist who created them. As such, anyone reproducing the works, especially for commercial purposes, needs the permission of that artist.

While getting ready to release more information about our new service, TypePad, I realized that there are some basic questions that need to be answered first. We've been trying to think about what the likely TypePad audience would like to know and I figured it's probably better just to ask them**.

So, if you're considering using TypePad (See this release for more information) and you have some time (~15 minutes) today to chat via IM, please read this entire post and then contact me. I'd like to speak to between 10-15 people.

Update:Thanks all who contacted me!

** I picked dollarshort.org instead of Six Apart or Typepad.com because I think that my readership is a bit more varied.

Is It Spam If You Asked For It, But No
Longer Want It?
03/25/2005 07:27 PM
A new study from an email marketing firm is warning that ISPs are blocking a lot of "permission based" emails in their spam filters. The announcement is clearly implying that this is a bad thing and a problem that marketers and ISPs need to work on to solve (and, of course, this company wants to show off that they have some sort of solution). However, you have to wonder if this is really that big of a "problem." Most people don't define spam by the guidelines of things like CAN SPAM, but under FTC Commissioner Orson Swindle's spam definition as "anyt hing I don't like." Under that definition, plenty of things that people at one time opted into they might now consider spam. Of course, that might not be true in all cases, and ISPs that are block ing without giving users a chance to review/whitelist what was blocked are an issue, but if people aren't missing these emails... is it really a problem?

Booksellers asked to reconsider "Unfit" 08/20/2004 02:38 PM
Calling Unfit for Command, "the Hitler Diaries of the current political season -- a complete fraud," a media advocacy group is urging major book retailers to rethink their policy surrounding the anti-John Kerry title, which stands at the center of a controversial smear campaign. Noting that key allegations in the book have already been proven to be false, Media Matters for America CEO David Brock today wrote to Wal-Mart, Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble "to express my concern that by continuing to sell "Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry" as a work of nonfiction, prominent book retailers are complicit in a literary hoax."
