I am told

I am told 06/27/2004 11:17 AM

I should write something on this site every once in awhile.

Okay, what’s been going on. I started a webhosting company, turned Textpattern formally open-source, incorporated on two continents, wrote business plans in two languages, talked to more bank managers than reasonably possible, tried and failed to buy the last remaining affordable dream house in the Languedoc, got very angry, was reminded fully and sharply why I’m no longer a graphic designer, got sternly talked-to by the far-more-patient and impossibly lovely Herself during some of the more flaily moments, found (we think) a pretty good alternative house, and turned 38.

Hell of a ride, this life.

Oh, somewhere in the middle of all that the thumbnail link to the Daily Oliver dropped off the front page, even though daily pictures were still being put up. You can go catch up if you like.

In other news, Joey Anuff finally got his Baffler #5.

Told you so

Told you so 12/29/2004 03:02 AM
I hate people who say I told you so... But.... Edgar Morales shot a little girl, does that make him a terrorist? Other gang members were prosecuted before this for terrorism, other groups who maybe should have haven't - so what's the new law for? Is this the first of many prosecutions under new laws wh ich some said would do one thing but are actually doing something else?

I hate to say I told you so - #324 07/20/2004 07:45 PM

Throughout the 90's I got a rep of a screaming maniac - insisting that HTML sucked, dial-up sucked and that what they were calling broadband - was in fact mid-band.

I knew that without at least 5Mbps to the home - we'd never achieve the oft sought after broadband always on revolution.

So now Verizon is offering 5Mbps for $35 - 15Mbps for $45 and well - we plan on offering 30Mbps - but we haven't priced it yet.

So my reaction is a) it won't work - it'll bottleneck at the head-end, b) what's to download? Nobody can feed them data fast enough - but I end with an optimistic c) 'bout fucking time!

I was starting to feel old - but maybe we WILL see true broadband before I hit 50.

Oh yah - god bless Verizon. Is it true that it's Cory Doctorow in those commercials? "Can you hear me now?"

They use MySQL? Yes. I told you so... 11/04/2003 03:40 PM
A few months ago, I found myself in a drawn out stupid argument about MySQL with a self-proclaimed database expert. Along the way, I mentioned that Sabre was using MySQL in a pretty serious way. Not only did he tell me how completely wrong I was (because he knew people there and must be right), he refused to entertain the possibility of a company with such mission-critical systems using little old MySQL. Well, Mr. Database Jackass, I've got news for...

Wanadoo told to tone down it's ads

Wanadoo told to tone down it's ads 08/13/2004 09:11 AM
Reuters is reporting that the UK Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) have asked Wanadoo, a UK ISP, to tone down its broadband adverts. The adverts made use of the phrase "full speed" in relation to their 512k broadband service. The implication being that the company was offering the fastest broadband service in the UK.

Clearly, the argument centered arround what exactly is high-speed, and what is not. The compaint, lodged by competitors BT and Telewest, raised the point that the Wanadoo service of 512k broadband was 1/2 and even a 1/6 speed of the service offered by the two respective companies.

The ASA upholding the compaint will hopefully lead to more responsible advertising from UK ISP's; boasts of high-speed services need to be justified by figures in adverts so as to not confuse consumers. 512k connections are nolonger the fastest offering on the market, and thus ISP's cannot boast to this effect.

Wanadoo have undertaken a massive advertising campaign in the UK after purchasing Freeserve from Dixons.

What if Your Product Didn't Work --- And
Nobody Told You?

What if Your Product Didn't Work --- And
Nobody Told You?

What if Your Product Didn't Work --- And Nobody Told You?

I've been a user of Windows related multimedia files (originally .AVI) since like 1992ish -- back in the CD-ROM days and I just don't get it.  Whenever I'm on the net and I encounter .MPEG or .MOV / .QTW / QuickTime video files they just plain work.  Period.  Rarely if ever does an MPEG file not play.  Same for QuickTime.  Why is it then that I rarely, if ever, can make a .AVI file just play?  I'll see a .AVI file on the net and then I download it and nothing.  I always see "Attempting Codec Download" and then "Error".  And then, utterly annoyingly, Windows makes the less than intelligent decision "I'll just play the audio track".  Sure that makes sense.  After all when you can't show the pictures, just give them the sounds.  Sigh.

Now I'll do what all good bloggers do whenever they enchounter a Windows issue and make the anguished cry of pain!  Scoble ....!!!!

Note 1: Bitching was done in the context of a Fresh Windows XP Pro install and a new installation of Windows Media 9.  I mean I did the damn update last night.  Don't get much fresher than that.  Piffle.  When my clients ask me about streaming media, I guess my answer is here.

Note 2: Oh and why did I say "What if no one ever told you?"  Well what kinds of video files are mostly on the net?  Think anyone would really complain?

Minnesota Told Again Not To Tax VoIP

Minnesota Told Again Not To Tax VoIP 12/29/2004 03:03 AM
How many times does the Minnesota PUC need to be told that they cannot tax VoIP providers? Over a year ago, they were told to leave VoIP providers alone, and last month the FCC set rules saying the same thing. Of course, that wasn't going to stop Minnesota from trying. They appealed the case, suggesting that somehow the FCC ruling contradicted the earlier court ruling. However, the Appeals Court found the same thing that's pretty obvious to just about anyone: the rulings say basically the same thing -- which means Minnesota cannot tax VoIP. Will they actually understand this time? Update: Apparently, the California PUC has decided that they're still going to fight this, and have filed an appeal to the FCC ruling themselves.

What Sprint told us last week

What Sprint told us last week 12/08/2003 05:57 PM
Almost forgot to mention that we met with Sprint last week and was able to glean the following nuggets of information: 1. They still haven't decided whether or not to carry Sony Ericsson's T608 cellphone. Basically, Sony Ericsson quit making CDMA phones (at least for North America) and they are trying to sort out who would support the phone if it broke, etc. Also, even if they do decide to offer the T608, they haven't settled on whether or not it would have Bluetooth enabled (though we'd love to see how long it took someone to hack that). 2. They're thinking about carrying Samsung's i600 Smartphone. 3. The PCS Vision network is due to get a bump up in speed early next year. Sprint is going to improve the compression, which should mean faster download speeds. 4. Sprint should finally support SMS (rather than the cumbersome web interface they have...
