Nextel Shuts Down Flarion Trial 02/05/2005 09:27 PM
Mike Masnick breaks the news that Nextel is pulling the plug (or lack of plug) on Flarion trial: Mike's eagle eye apparently spotted a blogger noting his Flarion service was being turned off at the end of June. Nextel was trying Flarion's high-speed wireless broadband technology as an option for data service. Nextel's iDEN voice technology doesn't have a data path like GSM and CDMA. Masnick puts the blame on the trial ending on the Sprint/Nextel merger. Sprint has its dollars behind EVDO, the same technology being rolled out quite successfully by Verizon Wireless right now....

Nextel Moving Forward With Wireless
Broadband Offering

Nextel Moving Forward With Wireless
Broadband Offering
04/14/2004 01:05 PM
Back in February, Nextel made quite a splash with their surprise announcement that they were offering wireless broadband trials in North Carolina based on Flarion's technology. While Nextel has apparently been looking at a variety of wireless broadband technologies, it appears that they've been happy with the North Carolina Flarion trials so far. They've expanded the coverage area and are now going to accept paying customers to the service, which offers DSL-like speeds. They say it will average 1.5 Mbps down stream and 375 kbps upstream - with burst rates at double that. The cost of the plans will vary between $35 and $75 depending on speeds and other features (such as email accounts and storage). Clearly, this is something of a vote for Flarion's technology, and it will be interesting to see if Nextel continues to expand this offering (which sounds like it would be quite competitive with Verizon Wireless's EV-DO offering) and whether or not they publicly trial other technologies as well. Of course, launching in one location and launching nationwide are two very different beasts, but Nextel has shown that they've got quite a lot of marketing muscle - and are especially good at segmenting and targeting specific markets.

FCC Gives Nextel Spectrum Shuffle
Approval, But Does Nextel Approve?

FCC Gives Nextel Spectrum Shuffle
Approval, But Does Nextel Approve?
07/08/2004 05:39 PM
Reuters reports that the FCC commissioners voted 5-0 in favor of what sounded like a Nextel plan to reorganize an ugly band: Nextel owns tiny slices of a very ugly chopped up range in the 700 and 800 MHz, and their proposal was to reorganize it so that the public-safety purposes to which other slices are put can be consolidated and provided with more reliability. For their part, Nextel would receive a contiguous range in the 1.9 GHz band, and be less likely to cause interference in public-safety bands--which many blame not on Nextel but on the equipment used for fire, police, and emergencies--and have an easier time in providing cellular coverage at those higher frequencies. The FCC values the deal at $4.8 billion, but will give Nextel credit for $1.6 billion in returning the lower-band frequencies. Nextel has to put up a line of credit for $2.5 billion to cover relocation costs, which are allowed to exceed that amount. If Nextel's final bill is less than $3.2 billion, they have to pay the government the difference. Nextel's response was muted; they had wanted to pay $1.36 billion. Other cellular operators were complaining that the deal gave Nextel too much; it looks like the FCC chose this approach to make it worthwhile to public safety without letting Nextel off the hook....

Google expands mobile search

Google expands mobile search 06/17/2005 03:46 PM

Google has rolled out a new search service that only links to pages that have been formatted for display in mobile devices' small screens.

To access this XHTML-based service, users need to have a mobile device with a Web browser and enter a query in the search box at http://www.google.com or http://www.google.com/xhtml.

Mobile users can already perform searches from these locations, but on Thursday, Google added a new "Mobile Web" option to the pages. When this button is selected, users will only receive links to pages that have been formatted for the smaller displays of mobile devices, according to Google.

Other options available to mobile users are "Web," to run a query against the full Google Web index, "Images," to search for pictures, and "Local," to hit Google's business directory for local merchants.

Google also offers a similar Web search service for phones that support WML (wireless markup language) instead of XHTML (extensible markup language.) However, WML doesn't support images, so searching for pictures isn't possible using this service, which is available on a mobile device's browser at http://www.google.com/wml. The Mobile Web option is not available on WML phones.

If a user is unsure which markup language his phone supports, Google suggests trying both google.com/xhtml and google.com/wml to see which one works.

Another mobile search option from the Mountain View, California company is Google SMS, which lets users retrieve text information from the search index using Short Message Service technology. To tap this service, users need to send a query as a text message to Google's SMS code, which is 46645, and they will receive text results typically after a minute's wait. Google SMS has been designed to provide factual information such as local business listings, driving directions, movie showtimes, weather conditions and product prices.

Google's mobile search services are free, although mobile carriers may apply charges related to data transmission or Web browsing.
