Symantec Steps Up

Symantec Steps Up 05/27/2004 10:48 AM
Symantec Corp., in what can only be viewed as a welcome and generous act, has made their DeepSight Analyzer service available for free to the general public. This service has previously only been available to enterprise-level companies willing to shell out the money necessary. The DeepSight service does several important things- it gives you day-by-day sutomated reports of your system activity, access to the Analyzer Console online, and you can use it to generate summary reports of that activity. Now,why is that important? Because, in the even t of an attack and infection by an unknown virus or worm, that summary of activity can help you pinpoint in very short order the fact that your system?s strange behavior isn?t a figment of your imagination. That?s the first step in finding out what?s going on and how to stop it. It can isolate the strange actions so that you can figure out how to stop it.This would have been a huge plus to me during the recent attack on my system. I might have been able to isolate the problem days sooner. So get busy and get yourself set up with the DeepSight Analyzer as soon as possible! It?s one more piece of protection and you can seldom have too much protection.Keep in mind that this is NOT an anti-virus program. It simply provides a tool that can give you an edge if you should ever have to deal with an infection. As such, it doesn?t conflict with already installed anti-virus software. It certainly can be a life-saver, nonetheless.

Symantec Sheds Light

Symantec Sheds Light 05/26/2004 03:11 PM
I?ve reported on this before-Symantec Goes to SEA with On and PowerQuest Symantec Corp is looking to make use of the systems and storage management technologies it acquired with On Technology Corp and PowerQuest Corp in 2003 through its expanded Symantec Enterprise Administration business unit.Read more? But, this article defintely sheds more light on the rollout of Symantec?s acquired software. What is glaringly obvious, at least the way I read the article, is that we?d all better forget about PowerQuest?s former products and things that always have been Symantec?s. like Ghost, and start searching for a viable replacement. The name Acronis comes to mind.Symantec?s repurposing of the whole lineup to aim at enterprise markets makes it unlikely that any of us mere mortals will be able to #1) Afford the new software, and #2) Find somewhere to buy it retail. It?s a great shame, because PowerQuest?s tools, at the least, have become darn near indispensible over the years. Having run into some rough edges and problems with Acronis products in their earlier versions, I?m hoping that they now have solid and stable software to offer. We?re going to need it.

Mac OS X Will Become a Target, Symantec
Warns
03/22/2005 03:49 PM
It's only a matter of time before Apple's newly redesigned Mac operating system becomes a happy hunting ground for malicious hackers, according to a research report from security vendor Symantec. The Symantec Internet Security Threat Report, which tracked malicious hacker trends between July and December 2004, said increased sales of the low-priced Mac mini to less security-savvy computer users will lead to a bigger risk.

"Generally speaking, the Macintosh operating system has been relatively immune to malicious activity, particularly compared to other operating systems like Linux and Microsoft. With the introduction and popularity of Mac OS X, however, Apple has become a target for new attacks and vulnerabilities," the report stated. "Mac OS X has begun to not only capture the attention of users but of vulnerability researchers as well," the report added.

Every time Symantec AntiVirus 2003 (XP) encounters an incoming message with a virus, i.e. 10-20 times each time I download email, it puts up a dialogue box telling me what it's found. It's not asking me for advice or requiring me to make a decision. It's just patting itself on its back. And it interrupts the download until I press the button to dismiss it, presumably with a muttered "Attaboy, Norton, I mean, Symantec!" Which means I have to sit and watch my screen while I'm downloading email. With 1,200 incoming spams a day, this gets to be a bother....
