07/08/2004 03:39 AMThe 13th IST Mobile & Wireless Communications Summit held in Lyon
27-30 June has proved to be a major forum to present results of
European mobile industry initiatives. IST has succeeded in drawing
attention to the launch of its « 6th framework » programme, which
defines the priorities of the Mobile Industry in terms of research and
development for the two years ahead. More specifically, it raises the
health and safety issues arising from the rapid development of new
technologies and their impact on society. On a more positive note, the
“6th framework” outlines emerging marketing opportunities in the IT
sector. Visions of the Mobile future and the technological challenges
were addressed by speakers from Hewlett Packard, Motorola, and

Making Content More Mobile
Making Content More Mobile
01/04/2005 04:11 AMAs we head into CES time, there are a ton of stories about the various
gadgets and technologies that are on display, and one that keeps
getting mentioned is
Orb's offering to let
you access multimedia content from your PC via any web-browser,
even on a mobile device. We had
mention
ed them before, noting that what they're doing isn't all that
different from what others have done -- but they're much more focused
on setting themselves up to confront the entertainment industry. Part
of this is that they're also working on a system to let a user watch
their television from anywhere. What's most interesting, however, is
that the concept behind Orb is about taking the same content that is
available elsewhere and making it reusable on different devices. This
is actually a different way of thinking about content than many in the
broadcast industry seem to have these days. They mostly look at
content and tie it specifically to a device. Other devices are viewed
as
separate revenue opportunities. Witness the bizarre idea of
building an entire broadcast TV network
just
for mobile phones. With something like Orb, this wouldn't be
necessary. Instead, you make the content, put it out there, and let
the users, applications and devices sort out what works best in what
places for what people on what devices. That seems like a much better
way to actually offer people what they want than simply deciding for
them how they must want their content.

Online Games Having Trouble With The
Whole Free Speech Concept
Online Games Having Trouble With The
Whole Free Speech Concept
12/12/2003 08:51 PMI'm beginning to wonder if the various creators of online community
games really thought through all of the issues they were raising in
setting up the games. They were, in some sense, creating a new space,
where they were acting as the government. In most cases, they have
terms of service - but that's not quite the same as a constitution.
So, now, when real-life problems move across the virtual/real boarder,
they're struggling. We've discussed this before, and looked at how
some
are trying to answer the question, but Salon has an interesting
article looking at the latest happenings in the Sims Online. One
member has been acting as a sort of National Enquirer of the online
world and posting articles to a blog. He focuses on the "bad" people
in the world - the scammers and other questionable characters. There
are some interesting legal issues raised by the people he talks to -
such as the underage boy who plays a female character in the game and
is engaged in virtual prostitution for in-game money, which can be
sold for real cash on eBay. Is that really prostitution? There's
also the
"Sims
Shadow Government" that we've discussed before to try to deal with
these situations in the game. It appears that they felt the real
government (that is, the company that puts the Sims Online) is absent
and so they're there to fill the void. In the meantime, the folks at
EA, who run the Sims Online, don't appear to have given this much
thought. Instead of dealing with these issues, they've
kicked the reporter out and closed down his
account, saying he violated their policies. In other words, they
seem to be going with something of a despot government that will exile
and censor whoever raises any threatening questions. That's their
choice, of course, as it is their world. However, it probably won't
get them the best reputation as a virtual place to live. How many
people do you know who are actively immigrating into countries run by
dictators?

Game: Nervous Breakdown
06/05/2005 11:48 PMJune 2, 2005 - Mac Games and More has published another free game
for Mac OS X. The game is called, “Nervous Breakdown,” a brick
wall game where a player uses a ball to break down a wall that is
progressively growing and moving downward. The ball begins slowly and
as the game continues, it increases in speed, and the wall increases
in size. Nervous Breakdown breaks away from others of its kind such
that during game play the gamer has only one life and has only one
chance to play the level without dropping the ball.
