MCE and software

MCE and software

MCE and software 04/14/2004 05:04 PM

NewsGator comes to Windows Media Center... now it's time to really open up MCE to the masses.

I can talk about this now! This is a major development as it shows promise not only for RSS but for the notion of MCE as a platform. Unlike the rather lames MSNBC channel in the Media Center online services, NewsGator lets me view and work with RSS content while really taking advantage of the Media Center UI. One of the things that Microsoft needs to do to really spur development is to remove the restriction that vendors need to ship a TV tuner with MCE. While the TV is important and it's a good exprerience, there's a lot of folks that don't need it or want it but do want to view their pictures, listen to music and read newsfeeds with the benefits of the 10 foot UI. It's a bold move for Microsoft to make but will provide the impetus for more developers to get on board and create a positive feedback loop, sprak growth of Media Center Extender and Portable Media Center devices and create a consistent framework for developers and benefit to users.

This used to be what Microsoft was best at. I wonder if anyone over there still remembers the concept :)

Like I said, my Tivo is getting unplugged this year and I'm going to get a Windows Media Center PC. Why? Well, my favorite news aggregator, NewsGator, is now on the Media Center. Congrats Greg Reinacker for getting that done.

[Scobleizer: Microsoft Geek Blogger] [Michael Garetenberg]

I couldn't agree with Robert and Gartenberg more.  This is key.

Maybe now Microsoft will see that by supporting open stdnards the consumer/Interactive TV/PVR/Home Media/Home LAN world really has a lot to do with supporting 3rd party ISVs and driving an add-on marketplace.  Just 'cause it's not a Microsoft standard shouldn't mean it'll get ignored.

Without software the MCE is nothing.

With software - it's window into the future.

Mobilization of Software Developers: The Free Software Movement by Margret S. Elliott and Walter Scacchi
http://ope nsource.mit.edu/papers/elliottscacchi2.pdf

Abstract by Author:
Free/open source software (F/OSS) development projects are growing at a rapid rate. Globally dispersed virtual communities with large groups of software developers contribute time and effort often without pay. One force behind this phenomenon is the Free Software Movement (FSM), a 20 year-old social movement whose purpose is to promote the use of free software instead of proprietary software. We show how the ideology of the FSM influences software development work practices in F/OSS communities and how an occupational community of F/OSS developers has emerged from this movement. We present results from an empirical study of a F/OSS development community, GNUenterprise (GNUe) whose purpose is to build an Enterprise Resource Planning system. We show how the beliefs in freedom and freedom of choice, and the values of cooperative work and community building are manifested in the GNUe norms of informal self-management, immediate acceptance of fellow contributors, and open disclosure.

Big Flexible Software Or Focused
Situational Software?

Big Flexible Software Or Focused
Situational Software?
09/03/2004 05:04 AM
Earlier this year, we wrote about Clay Shirky's vision of situati onal software -- suggesting that a new (often, younger) generation of software developers wasn't focused on big, web-based applications that could scale, but small, quick-and-dirty applications to serve a specific purpose for a specific group of people. In fact, they were often designed by non-programmers, with the goal of just making one particular task for one, focused, group more efficient. This view of things has been supported by people like Charles Simonyi who is trying to work on tools to help people build such quick-and-dirty apps without any programming background. At the same time, efforts from Sun and Microsoft to offer up increas ingly simple tools for non-programmers to program all suggest a move in that direction. However, from Between the Lines, comes a pointer to an analysis that appears to be suggesting exactly the opposite. As the world moves towards service oriented architectures, it predicts "the end of craft software", which will be replaced by big, but flexible, web services components that can easily be modified to meet ever-changing needs. The suggestion is that, by designing to web services standards, developers will finally be able to wipe out some of the quality problems associated with existing software offerings. Both sides seem a little idealistic in their visions. For years we've had attempts at making programming tools for non-programmers and that hasn't gone very far. Meanwhile, the idea of componentized jigsaw puzzle software has been trotted out on a fairly regular basis -- and while there have been religious wars on various implementations, very little has actually changed in the way most companies develop software. So, which direction is the world really going in? In some sense, the answer may be both (and neither). The idea of more open "service oriented" systems is clearly the way where enterprise systems need to move. However, beneath that level, the idea of more niche, focused applications (perhaps designed by non-programmers) for specific needs still has a very large (and rapidly growing) place.

Linksys Offers Range Extender with
Limits
06/16/2004 09:54 AM
Linksys's WRE54G is a logical repeater, listening to network traffic and rebroadcasting it; but security options are lacking, advice is odd: The description of this device contains slim information. As far as I can tell, it's a Wi-Fi only logical repeater, meaning that it's using networking magic to relay data. It can't be using Wireless Distribution System (WDS) because Linksys notes it works with any 802.11b or g network. It must attach as a client to an existing network and redistribute access as an access point itself. This function is similar to Linksys's WET11 and WET54G, which bridge Ethernet networks to any access point by simulating a client and masquerading MAC addresses. The manual for this range extender mentions multiple times in the first few pages of configuration advice that the range extender is easier to use if you turn off WEP encryption--which is extremely odd advice coming from a Wi-Fi equipment maker at this point in time. The unit only supports WEP as an encryption option, meaning that more secured networks that use WPA can't take advantage of range extension. The unit will cost $99, but I'm not sure it's necessary except for legacy home networks. For about $80 you can purchase a WRT54G, but Linksys has only enabled wireless bridging as a fixed mode: that is, a WRT54G can't bridge and be an access point at the same time. A similar unit from Buffalo, the WLA2-54G, costs about $100 and like Apple's AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express Base Stations, can serve clients while bridging to other gateways. If were building a network from scratch that required bridging and I wanted WPA security now, I'd choose Buffalo's gateway as the fundamental element....

First learn computer science and all the theory. Next develop a programming style. Then forget all that and just hack. -- George Carrette

I posted this comment a few weeks ago, but i never clarified what i thought of this quotation - until now...

Let's say you learnt a subject really well, and were asked to teach others. You enjoy teaching and others admire your teaching style. Then one day, you throw away all your notes and teach off-the-cuff, from memory. You have to really know your stuff before you'd dare do that.

We'll that's what I think George Carrette meant by "Just Hack". If you don't know your stuff inside-out, upside-down and every-which-way, "Just Hack" is probably not for you.

Just Hack

First learn computer science and all the theory. Next develop a programming style. Then forget all that and just hack. -- George Carrette

Reminds me of the time the Malaysian government sent a software team to Canada to do technology transfer for a flight simulator system. After spending 2 years in Canada, they returned, and i asked one of the team members how the Canadian coders designed this powerful and complex system. I was expecting some detailed software methodology involving multiple phases. He told me, "they just hire a bunch of talented programmers, teach them the physics, and tell them to hack!"

Linksys Posts Beta Firmware to Correct
Remote Admin Problem
06/04/2004 02:13 PM
Linksys has posted beta firmware for its WRT54G that closes a potential remote access hole in its security: The initial report indicated that remote administration of the WRT54G was possible out of the box. The consultant who reported the problem checked other WRT54Gs: if firewall protection is turned on (Linksys says this is the default and users confirm), then the remote issue is non-existent. However, some of the units that the consultant purchased to test had firewall service turned off out of the box. A Linksys spokesperson said that this release is labeled beta because other functionality changes are in progress and not yet finalized. Linksys' official statement reads, "For those rare few that do disable the firewall and turn off remote admin on their WRT54G, Linksys advises those users to download the latest beta firmware which is posted on the Linksys website." I just purchased a WRT54G to test out its default configuration, and I can confirm that I received a unit with firmware v2.02.2 (which predates the 2.02.7 March 2004 release), and that its firewall service enabled....

Change Your Linksys WRT54G Admin
Password Right Now!
06/02/2004 01:16 PM
Tech consultant discovers that Linksys WRT54G allows remote, over-the-Internet administration login even when remote management is turned off: Because all broadband gateway vendors ship their equipment with default passwords like public or admin, this vulnerability is moderately critical according to the Secunia security consultants. An automated attack could scan millions of home broadband network addresses and feed them the WRT54G Web login sequence. With remote administrative access, the most that could happen is vandalism: the Linksys doesn't provide tools via its Web interface for packet sniffing, but someone could corrupt the setup and lock a user out by changing the password, requiring a hard reset. Also, Linksys' Web form appears to send the WEP or WPA password as hidden password text in a Web form, but that text is unencrypted in the HTML source, which can easily be viewed....

How to hack Blogger

How to hack Blogger 06/29/2004 05:48 AM
Blogger has published an article on how to hack the service to add greater customization by tweaking its template vocabulary:
For instance, most of our default templates display archive links in a list. But really, the archive tags simply provide the names and URLs of all the archive files, and we can do whatever we want with them. Do you know how to make a pull-down menu in HTML? Think that might be a more efficient format for your three years of daily archives? Great! Move the archive tags out of the list and into a menu.
