10/30/2003 12:38 AMIn what has to be the last of the delays we've seen for the Mastercard
exclusive Gentle Giants Darth Vader mini-bust, it looks like the day
holders of the Galactic Rewards Mastercards have to wait at least a
couple more weeks before they can pony up 7,500 points for a Vader.
The often delayed "order date" has been moved again, this time to
"mid-November". If you have the card, you can check on the progress of
this yourself at

Portugal's Wi-Fi Initiatives
01/09/2004 09:52 PMIn response to our recent post about how many APs per student
universities hang, Joao Nuno Castro kindly sent along a chart listing
70 universities in Portugal and how many APs they use: The average is
100 users per AP, but the numbers range from as low as nine to as high
as 624, though most on the high end are closer to 150. That wide range
may be tied to coverage and overall student population, not
necessarily due to some ratio an IT manager has in mind. Castro works
for the Innovation and Knowledge Society Unit in the Portuguese
Government and offered up some information about Portugal's interest
in Wi-Fi. Portugal has an Electronic University (e-U) project that
aims to build networks on university campuses and link them together.
Portugal seems really aggressive in encouraging Wi-Fi network
development. Read more about the e-U initiative here. Portugal is also
part of the Trans European Research and Education Networking
Association which plans to enable roaming for students and researchers
between member universities. Portugal is helping to pioneer the
infrastructure that will enable roaming in 2005, Castro said....

06/22/2004 12:41 PMCredit card and payments company MasterCard International Inc. said on
Tuesday that it is partnering with NameProtect Inc., an online brand
protection service, to combat online identity theft and a black market
in stolen credit card numbers. The two companies will combine their
efforts against phishing scams and online identity thieves, taking "a
more aggressive approach" to cyberscams that affect consumers and
companies. MasterCard will have access to data from NameProtect's
technology, which can search and filter large volumes of Internet
content to find online scams. The companies will also work with law
enforcement to shut down Internet sites and tools used by identity
thieves, the companies said in a joint statement.

11/19/2003 04:33 PMI really can't remember the last time a promotion that I know is
supposed to help the
Star Wars brand has gone as wrong as the
one Lucasfilm is doing with MBNA right now. In what seems like a
string of problems, a quick check of the official
MBNA Galactic Rewards
website will show you, as it now has been for about three weeks,
that they are completely and hopeless offline. Never mind that
frequent calls to them have now turned to comical as they now are
gun-shy of telling callers the next promised date it will be online
again. And forget about finding out when they will make the cool
exclusive Gentle Giants Vader Mini-Bust available to us as each person
you talk to will give you a different date, or no date in some cases.
And on top of that, the last time I was able to see the promotion page
for this it said they had just 100 of them available, and sometime in
December they would go up from 7,500 points to 10,000 points each. I'm
taking odds it will be December before they ever get the darn site
back online. If you have missed the history on this, you can get up to
speed with a quick

A search.

New Broadband Wireless Initiatives
Around the Globe
09/14/2004 02:51 PMA few announcements have been made over the last couple of days about
new broadband wireless deployments. Two come from Alvarion, including
one where Telekom Serbia will build networks to support voice and data
in suburban and rural Serbia. Closer to home, Alvarion also announced
that its gear will supply a broadband wireless backbone network in
Maryland, connecting counties that are part of a project connecting
libraries and supplying mobile wireless for public safety workers. In
other broadband wireless news, Redline said that its equipment will
provide backhaul for a wireless network being built in a region of
Manitoba, Canada. Wi-LAN, a Calgary, Canada-based supplier, said that
its products are being used by various customers, including a large
ISP, in Malaysia. AirRover Wi-Fi, a company based in Baton Rouge, La.,
signed an agreement in principal to build city-wide mesh Wi-Fi
networks in a couple of cities in the Philippines. It must be
refreshing for vendors to be making these kinds of sales, even before
they are actually selling certified WiMax gear. There has been a fear
that customers would delay buying decisions as they wait for certified
WiMax gear. Perhaps the buzz around WiMax has generally helped to
legitimatize broadband wireless so that some customers decide it will
pay off for them to deploy now rather than wait for standard gear....

Self Assessment
Self Assessment
11/04/2003 01:57 AMYup, it's that time of year again. Ever since I've graduated from
college and worked full-time, the end of the year has meant that I
need to set aside some time to fill out forms as part of a formal
review process. The idea being that I assess myself, my manager
assesses me, and my peers provide feedback. This all gets stirred
together by my manager and then results in a rating of some sort and
possibly an annual raise....
