New Broadband Mechanics site

New Broadband Mechanics site 04/14/2004 03:51 PM

For over two years now I've taken a hiatus from my company Broadband Mechanics - as there was no work, funding, alliances or sponsorships to be had.

I've widely supported the notion of open standards, open source and have worked towards helping to establish new open standrads; like ThreadsML, OpenReviews, FOAF and now the FOAFnet.  Along the way I have accumlated some coolio clients and helped build some coolio projects.

Now it's all coming together.  As of early May - we'll all have an example of what a digital lifestyle aggregator is.  That'll hopefully inspire other people as to "what else is possible" and away we go.

I'm betting they'll be 100 more of these DLAs built over the next few years.

We intend on building many of them.

Introduction to regular expressions
(#1): General Mechanics
02/05/2003 11:54 PM

Anyone that has to do a large sum of unusual data manipulation will always choose to use regular expressions ('regex') over native functions because of one thing: power. In PHP the 'ereg_' functions are what utilize ERE POSIX, and the 'preg_' functions utilize PCRE. In this 'introduction to regular expressions' I will assume no prior knowledge of regex, and will try to give you the most thorough explanation of this powerful tool as I can.

The Not Really Free, Not Really
Broadband, Free Broadband Scam

The Not Really Free, Not Really
Broadband, Free Broadband Scam
08/06/2004 04:41 PM
Aaron writes in to point us to a story at Broadband Reports about a scam claiming to offer "free" broadband, when the truth is anything but that. The company in question is really just offering one of those silly web "accelerator" tools that speed up some dialup web surfing by caching images and using some compression. It's not really broadband at all, though if you're stuck on dialup, apparently it helps. It's also not free at all, since it's a typical pyramid scam, where you need to get others to sign up first. Since they know otherwise intelligent people will know it's a scam, the site doesn't make outrageous claims on their home page, but leaves those only for those who come via a referral code (which is all part of the scam) at which point they start making outlandish claims anyone with a bit of broadband knowledge would know were false.

Site

A Dating Site That Doesn't Need Its Own
Site
05/04/2004 06:25 PM
People are starting to realize that Google is more of a platform than just a search engine. With all the focus on social networks these days, Google still doesn't search in those networks. So, one company is trying to use the power of Google and public websites to build their own open social networking dating site. Basically, they get you to fill out a typical dating profile, which generates some metadata that you include on your own website. Then, they've apparently built out some sort of front-end that uses Google to search sites that include that metadata. What's unclear is how they make sure that Google will index the right sites that include the data. The business model for the company is to show Google's contextual ads along with the results. It's an interesting idea, but I wonder how comfortable some people are with putting that sort of info on the "publicly" available web. While it's really not all that different than on a dating site, a dating site at least is somewhat hidden behind a protective barrier, and lets the user hide some of their info.
