Introduction to MySQL Cluster

Introduction to MySQL Cluster

Introduction to MySQL Cluster 04/14/2004 03:51 PM

Notes from the Introduction to MySQL Cluster talk at the 2004 MySQL User's Conference... First we're seeing an overview of the NDB architecture. If you've never seen it before, think "Oracle RAC without shared storage" and you're 95% of the way there. The core NDB engine is a new storage engine inside MySQL. It provides transactions, replication, on-line backups, crash recovery, hash and tree indexes, on-line index builds, auto-detection of a failed node and re-sync when it comes back up....

Notes from the MySQL Cluster High Availability Features talk at the 2004 MySQL User's Conference... Redundancy between nodes via heartbeat. Redundancy between clusters via replication. The architecture in general was designed to eliminate single points of failure. Lots of diagrams illustrating recovery in various failure scenarios that I can't ASCII copy too easily. Doh!...

Tuesday morning I stopped by a few minutes of Joe Celko's Advanced SQL Tutorial. Joe has an amazing knowledge of the SQL language, no doubt. Lots of arcane knowledge and references to "when we had the discussions in the SQL committee we did discuss that". But the tutorial was a bit too DBAish for me. By that I mean too much "this is how data should be neat" rather than "this is how you solve real business problems". While I...

MySQL Administrator Alpha Release

MySQL Administrator Alpha Release 02/12/2004 04:48 PM

MySQL Administrator Downloads: MySQL has an alpha release for the new MySQL Administrator. It's very polished for an alpha, and the entire app looks first-rate. However, it differs from MySQL Control Center in that it's for management of the server, not for development of the database. There doesn't seem to be any interface for running SQL or managing individual records.
