RoamAD Partner Unwires Auckland

RoamAD Partner Unwires Auckland

RoamAD Partner Unwires Auckland 04/14/2004 03:46 PM

RoamAD's so-far unique implementation of zone coverage with standard Wi-Fi used by Reach Wireless to offer service in Auckland's central business district: RoamAD uses 802.11b/g for their service and 802.11a for backhaul between points. They blanket an area by using as many as all of the legal, overlapping 802.11b/g channels with one card devoted to each channel in a chassis. The VP of business development, Martin Levy, told me at 802.11 Planet last year that for their goals, of achieving a minimum of mid-300 Kbps throughout their zone, the interference across overlapping channels was unimportant compared to the additional, inexpensive coverage that their approach allowed. The partner, Reach Wireless, will roll out RoamAD technology in all of the major markets in New Zealand. RoamAD hopes to sell its technology to cell carriers looking for major metropolitan coverage that can be offered at higher speeds but a fractional cost (with no licensing fees) as cellular broadband....

RoamAD and Reach fire up city wi-fi

15.04.2004 By PETER GRIFFIN

RoamAD has resurrected plans for a wireless internet network in Auckland's inner city, but this time it will supply only the technology, leaving the service to be run by growing "wi-fi" operator Reach Wireless.

RoamAD has also received a US$100,000 ($155,000) loan from Silicon Valley-based chip maker Intel, a small amount given the multi-billion-dollar investment arsenal of Intel Capital, but an endorsement of RoamAD's technology nevertheless.

Reach Wireless, which is backed by telecoms entrepreneur Chris Jones, will offer wireless internet access in a 3km-square section of the inner city spanning apartment buildings, cafes and offices, using the network built by RoamAD.

Previously the plan had been for RoamAD to run the network itself and seek a partner in a large telco to market and service the network. But no deal eventuated and RoamAD has spent the last year focusing on developing its technology. "RoamAD is an equipment vendor and we need to sell our technology to customers like Reach," said RoamAD chairman Martin Levy.

Auckland University of Technology Takes
Wi-Fi Campus-wide Commercially

Auckland University of Technology Takes
Wi-Fi Campus-wide Commercially
07/29/2004 01:06 AM
AUT will rely on Reach Wireless to install a campus-wide, commercial hotzone: In the U.S., we're used to universities and other educational institutions installing Wi-Fi as part of their basic infrastructure, including the cost of operation out of their physical plant or IT budget, alum fund, students fees (partly hidden), or other endowments. Auckland, New Zealand's technology institute has turned to commercial operator Reach Wireless, which employs RoamAD's quasi-mesh/cell Wi-Fi architecture, to deploy a hotzone across campus and handle the finances. AUT will own the infrastructure and carry the hotzone's traffic over its own Internet feed. But Reach Wireless will operate the service, collect fees, and provided customer and billing support. Students and faculty will be charged NZ$16.95 (US$15.25) per month. Existing Reach customers and the general public will also be able to use the campus network. Current subscribers won't pay extra for access; vice-versa, AUT affiliated subscribers will have Reach within reach at a small additional cost off campus. Here's the kicker from a press release: The network was designed in one day and deployed in less than a week....

T-Mobile UK Unwires Texaco

T-Mobile UK Unwires Texaco 04/21/2004 02:17 PM
T-Mobile UK has service in dedicated bays in 100 Texaco stations near major UK roads: The deal could ultimately result is as many as 1,400 company-owned Texaco stations having T-Mobile UK service, but a limiting factor is dedicated parking space for motorists using the service. There's an undertone in The Register article and press releases about not just backing up the pump lines (a problem for a gas station), but causing explosions. The risk of an explosion with a cell phone in a gas station appears to be from the inadvertent seepage of fumes in some cases which can be ignited by electrical activity in a cell phone. The adjacency has to be pretty high. A laptop operating away from the pumps has no risk. Estonia pioneered gas station Wi-Fi, while a deal with Circle K in the U.S. (which have gas at some locations) appears to have evaporated after Circle K changed hands....

Mobilicom Unwires Austrian McDonald's

Mobilicom Unwires Austrian McDonald's 02/13/2004 05:23 PM
Austrian carrier Mobilkom will add Wi-Fi to all 161 McDonald's restaurants in the country (in German): Forty McDonald's in Vienna were already unwired in a test. Service will be free until the end of April. Mobilkom hopes to at least double the number of hotspots it operates on top of these new additions, although no time frame was mentioned in the article. Subscribers can charge their hotspot usage via a gateway page login or by using SIM card authentication. Mobilkom might also charge by the half hour, 2 hours, or 24 hour period. The article notes that exclusive of those time period plans, service (as with the company's GPRS and UMTS) will cost a euro a megabyte, which seems extraordinarily high....

Iowa Unwires Rest Stops

Iowa Unwires Rest Stops 02/05/2005 09:26 PM
Iowa joins a growing trend of states with large empty stretches: For traffic safety purposes, the more frequently people stop, stretch, and take their eyes off the road, the better. Adding Wi-Fi at rest stops is just one tool in that arsenal, but it's also a nice idea for tourists, truckers, and business travelers. Iowa will equip a total of 40 locations by July; 20 of them by mid-March. A trial set of eight locations had 111,000 access over seven months. Several stops are active on Interstates 35 and 80. Service will be free and operated by I-Spot....

Vivato's equipment will be used by ICOA to provide Wi-Fi service at the Spokane airport: The airport handles about 1.2 million passengers (counted once for enplanement/deplanement) per year. ICOA seems to be specializing in smaller but high-volume airports like Sacramento, Savannah/Hilton Head, and Fresno that require very little hardware but reach a million or more passengers a year. Extrapolating from Concourse's figures for usage at Minneapolis-St. Paul, these smaller airports should see 20 to 30 sessions per day....

SBC Is Wayport's Partner?

SBC Is Wayport's Partner? 06/07/2004 01:03 AM
NY Times slips that SBC is Wayport's first reseller partner for Wi-Fi World: In a by-the-numbers piece questioning whether free Wi-Fi hotspots were challenging for-fee hotspots, Matt Richtel doesn't mention Wayport by name, focusing instead on T-Mobile. We've heard quite a bit of this before, but usually involving more sweeping free service, such as that offered by hotel chains (wired and Wi-Fi), or the model promoted by Austin Wireless City or NewburyOpen.net. The writer says that Cometa went out of business because it was not providing a suitable return to investors. I disagree. Cometa stated, and several sources confirmed for me, that it was unable to raise additional funds from new investors. AT&T and IBM, cited as part of the financing, never invested serious money. Richtel gets to the heart of it when he quotes a Wi-Fi user at a free location saying, he would consider subscribing to a Wi-Fi plan if there were a provider that offered universal access to hot spots everywhere. Bingo. I'll reiterate my Yogi Berraism: in the future, unlimited national Wi-Fi will be free and it will cost $20 per month. Either you'll pay nothing and deal with any of the potential downsides of relying on service that's based on the returns in that model, or you (or more likely, your employer) will pay a flat $20 per month for unlimited access across all U.S. networks. But the key hidden fact in this story is in the last few paragraphs, when Richtel tips that SBC, which has hired Wayport to unwire its The UPS Store partner locations and manage them, will be Wayport's first Wi-Fi World customer, even though Wayport and Wi-Fi World aren't mentioned by name. In the Wi-Fi World model, Wayport is reselling access to McDonald's locations on a fixed rate per month. The article says SBC will offer unlimited service for $19.95 per month, but will ultimately discount it significantly to existing customers. It's unclear whether that rate includes both SBC-managed locations and McDonald's, but it's likely that it's both....
