04/15/2004 02:15 PMSince announcing Gmail two weeks ago, Google Inc. has been forced to
defend the planned Web-based e-mail service against accusations that
it may violate users' privacy. In the face of the attacks, especially
vociferous in Europe, which has strict privacy regulations, Google has
begun to express willingness to be flexible about how it offers the
service.

Privacy issues with Google library
search? Not!
06/22/2005 02:06 AMThis definitely goes under the category of Life on Other Planets.
Anyone who thinks that what Google is doing is inherently more evil
than what happens at any brick and mortar library must have been
watching ‘The Matrix’ a few too many times. The author,
Elinor Mills, seems to think that some horrific breach of privacy is
involved. No doubt she never visits real libraries, with their card
files full of personally identifiable customer lists…

07/28/2004 05:48 AMThe UK Big Brother Awards -- which present an Orwellian trophy of a
boot stepping on a human face forever to egregious governmental and
private-sector abusers of privacy -- are being held
tonight!
Free admission, no need to RSVP, loads of cheap drink, Mark Thomas
standup routines, DJs spinning -- your basic techno-activist festival.
I'll be there -- hope to see you too!
The event kicks off at the London School of Economics Student Union at
6:30PM, near the Aldwych and Holborn tube. The entrance to the Quad is
through the Claire Market Building
(Building C) on the right of Houghton Street (Directions, Map)
On July 28th 2004, Privacy International will stage the 6th annual UK
Big Brother Awards to recognise the people and organisations that have
done the most to devastate privacy & civil liberties in the UK.
Now an annual event in seventeen countries, Privacy International's
Big Brother Awards bring together a rich and unique mix of all
ideologies and backgrounds. This year, for the first time, the award
night will be open to the general public. A space for a thousand
people has been reserved at the London School of Economics, which is
hosting the event on the night.

EFF guide to Gmail privacy
EFF guide to Gmail privacy
04/15/2004 05:02 PMDonna sez: "EFF provides a quick and dirty technical work-around for
protecting your privacy if you want to use Google's beta Gmail service
- only a temporary fix, and there's the rub: Google needs to step up
and provide a solution that protects its customers' privacy (and the
same goes for other businesses than can link email to search data!)."
For current and prospective Gmail users, we suggest that you start by
deleting your existing Google cookies before you use Gmail (and before
you enter your real name or existing email address in any Google
form). This will help prevent your pre-existing search history from
becoming associated with your identity in the future. (Note that it
will also cause you to lose any Google preferences you have entered,
such as language or adult content preferences.)

07/09/2004 08:06 PMI have just read a review of Gmail that highlights some of the
concern people are having with the privacy of the service. We all know
that they are scanning incoming e-mail to be able to target
advertisements at you. But the writer is concerned with legal
ramifications of being on Gmail and the possibility of Gmail becoming
a one stop shopping center for law enforcement. [Technology Review]
