419 Scams As A Way Of Keeping Up On
Current Events
04/14/2004 11:51 AM

I'm beginning to think that it could be an interesting subject to study what cultural/national situations are referenced by 419 "advance fee" scam emails. While the most common such email comes from Nigeria, they've adjusted over time to pick up on other countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, they're trying to pick up on events, like the Olympics. They all look pretty much the same, though - and if you're pattern matching ability is so weak that you can't realize this is the exact same scam you've got other problems. Still, some people continue to fall for such scams on a regular basis.

Identity Theft, Auction Scams Top The
List Of Scams Again

Identity Theft, Auction Scams Top The
List Of Scams Again
02/01/2005 09:43 PM
It's unlikely to surprise many people but identity theft and aucti on scams where the seller never ships the item topped the list of scam complaints to the FTC. Of course, what the FTC doesn't break down is how many of the identity theft complaints happened online vs. those caused by a lost wallet or checkbook. Just last week, a study suggested that online identity theft really isn't a very big problem. Also, as the original article notes, it's tough to tell whether the quantity of scams increased, or just that consumers are more aware of them and know to report them. Update: Meanwhile, over in the UK, it looks like d ifferent kinds of scams are popular, with typical confidence scams leading the way.

Top Five Scams

Top Five Scams 04/12/2005 06:10 AM
PC World has published a list of the top five online scams affecting Americans. Research firm Gartner believes nearly 10 million were hit online by fraudsters in the past year. There's nothing hugely surprising in the top five, with some old favourites in there. These are they:

1: Auction Fraud
Place a bid on eBay and win; but your goods never turn up; you get a fake version of what you ordered; or you simply get sent a web link to a site offering money off the product. Helpful...

2: Phishing
As Neowin reported earlier today, the number of people being caught out by phishing e-mails - messages pretending to be from their bank or another agency and asking for their details - has gone through the roof. The sites look real - but they're completely fake.

3: Nigerian 419
An old favourite at number three. A message arrives from a mysterious African, telling you he'd love to split millions of dollars with you, if only he could get it out of the country - and can you help? Shame the money doesn't exist, really...

4: Postal Forwarding/Reshipping
Give your address to some "offshore company". Let them get stuff sent to you and ship it on - and they'll pay you, too. Unfortunately, the goods are bought using stolen credit cards, making it likely the feds will pay you a visit - and those nice people will probably steal your money as well.

5: Congrulations, You've Won!
No, you haven't. That random e-mail telling you you got an iPod, Xbox, or plasma telly? Couldn't be more fake. They'll ask for your card number and PIN so they can cover shipping costs - then go on a spending spree. If you're lucky, they might steal your identity too.

TTY scams

TTY scams 04/13/2004 03:36 PM

This is an unfortunate story about TTY machines being used by scam artists, while at the same time they are protected by confidentiality laws. It's a tough situation...on the one hand the laws are good and just for people with disabilities trying to get through their life, but on the other these rules are being exploited to carry out crime. I don't know what solution there is to this, but it's a sad story.

Phishing Scams Amazingly Effective

Phishing Scams Amazingly Effective 07/28/2004 04:53 PM
An anti-spam company showed a bunch of emails to people to see if they could spot the phishing scam emails from the legitimate emails and discovered that an awful lot of people are easily fooled. 28% of the time, people thought scam emails were legit. No wonder they're so popular these days. The study also turned up that there are problems with false negatives as well. A large number of perfectly legitimate emails are now being dismissed as fraudulent by users who are too weary of phishing scams. This, obviously, can be quite troublesome for companies who need a legitimate way to contact their customers. The answer seems pretty simple: don't put URLs in emails any more. If you need someone to check their account, tell them to go to your webpage and login, and have a clear splash page that details the issue. Then, convince people not to click on emails in these messages.
