04/23/2004 12:11 PMIn the
On
Search series, I wrote a piece called
Intelligence that explained why intelligent search is hard, but that it is so
eagerly desired that there are predictable flurries of excitement
every so often over the next, uh, pretender. This time,
Cringely
has been sucked in. Well, not entirely, he loads up with caveats
too, but it’s a little sad to see one of the really big-name writers
point to such tattered hype. Earth to Bob: the problem with AI
isn’t that the “A” part isn’t fast enough, it’s that we
don’t understand the “I” part. I wonder what it takes for some
obscure little company peddling a dream that has been around the
track so many times to get airtime with this guy? Cringely needs to
pull up his game a bit: in the last couple of weeks, he was the only
person on the planet to conclude that the Sun-Microsoft deal was
somehow bad for the Java Desktop System; not that he actually advanced
any arguments on the subject, just proclaimed it. The people in
Redmond are smarter than Bob and I’m pretty sure that the deal
isn’t making them worry less about
this.

Best Wi-Fi Signal Finder Yet
Best Wi-Fi Signal Finder Yet
04/22/2004 05:19 PM Chrysalis previews their WiFi Seeker, a keychain sized device for
instant Wi-Fi signal finding: Chrysalis sent me a demo unit of its
just-unveiled WiFi Seeker, which they designed to differentiate
80211b/g networks from other devices. Two previous Wi-Fi signal
finders fell short in ways the Seeker does not. The Kensington WiFi
Finder is relatively large (credit card sized) and scans before
displaying the results instant of a constant active scan--but it can
tell Wi-Fi from junk. WFS-1 from SMart ID is much cooler offering a
no-industrial-design-intended box with instant scanning--but which
"hears" all 2.4 GHz signals the same. object

width="232" align="left" hspace="4"> Push the button on the WiFi
Seeker and it scans briefly, often under a second, before displaying a
signal strength in zero to four LEDs. Keep the button held down and
it's a Wi-Fi dowser, allowing you to move around and see immediate
response to different signal strengths. It's more directionally
sensitive than the WFS-1. Chrysalis will sell the device starting in
June for $29.95. Earlier, PC Tel has said they would make the device
available to their customers, so one presumes that Chrysalis can sell
custom branded versions of the device....

Let My Spectrum Go
Let My Spectrum Go
08/13/2004 06:07 PMThe topic of open spectrum certainly isn't new. However, it's
suddenly getting a lot more attention. Yesterday, the Economist had a
nice backgrounder on the debate (though, they screwed up a few
facts), and today Clay Shirky has written up a
long
piece in defense of opening up more spectrum. Opening up more
spectrum, especially a lot of the valuable spectrum the broadcasters
are hoarding, would be a huge deal, and could be
very helpful
for a variety of industries and the overall economy. However, as I
pointed out yesterday,
it's not
quite that easy. While it's clear that those who benefit from a
world where spectrum is scarce are over-playing the fear of more
unlicensed spectrum,
interference still is a problem. Shirky
cites one test that showed where interference wasn't a problem, but to
use that one story to suggest there are no interference problems
denies what plenty of folks in the wireless industry see every day.
He also uses WiFi as an example that interference isn't a problem --
which is news to anyone who has ever discovered just how much a
problem interference can be on a WiFi system (I had to return a
cordless phone that disconnected my home WiFi every time I took a
call). I'm all for freeing up more spectrum, but the wireless
industry needs to do a better job showing how they will deal with the
interference issues, and proving that it really won't be a problem.
Let them come up with real solutions to the interference problems
people see every day, and then, absolutely, let's free up more
spectrum.

Traffic signal prankster
Traffic signal prankster
06/22/2005 01:49 AMDavid Pescovitz:
A prankster in Sunnyvale, California has been toying with traffic
lights across the city for three months. Police say he or she has
turned them to face the wrong way, altered the timing, and made them
flash red in all directions. From the San Francisco Chronicle:
"There is evidence that whoever is doing it knows what
they're doing," (city spokesman John) Pilger said. "The evidence
suggests they're an electrician or have that background. This isn't a
high school prank."
Further puzzling investigators is the fact the traffic trickster used
a cherry-picker truck to reach an overhead signal spanning a busy
intersection -- apparently without anyone being any the wiser, Pilger
said. What's more, the practical joker has effortlessly opened the
control boxes that contain the signals' electronic guts.
