Networks of shared experience

Networks of shared experience 04/14/2004 11:49 AM

Jefferson Provost has written a thoughtful essay on music sharing as viral marketing. He writes, in part:

The big issue here is how serious music fans decide what music to buy. I'm talking about the people who maintain large CD collections and spend a lot of money on music -- the customers that the music industry should be holding close to their hearts. These people not only spend a lot of money themselves, but they influence their less musically-inclined friends. These people tend to have idiosynchratic tastes, and are picky to the point of snobbishness. They don't buy music based on music industry mass-marketing. They buy it based on hearing it and liking it, and the way they hear new music is by sharing it with friends. Radio used to play a part, too, but consolidation has turned music radio into a steaming pile of crap, so what's left? Networks of like-minded friends sharing music are what's left. [Jeff erson Provost]
Over the past weeks, I've been watching -- and participating in -- a fascinating experiment that aims to recreate the process of collaborative discovery that was Napster's greatest achievement. Ever heard of HeavyConfetti? Me neither, but I'm listening to Tito now on Webjay. The MP3 versions of these smooth Pat Metheny-inspired acoustic guitar tracks are licensed under Creative Commons. HeavyConfetti's e-commerce backend, somewhat puzzlingly, turns out to be: "email me and we can work something out." Maybe they should sign up with Magnatune, which has worked out a friendly but less casual purchasing model: ...

The Desktop Experience?

Should The Web Experience Be More Like
The Desktop Experience?
05/28/2004 12:41 PM
There have been many people who haven't been thrilled with the state of the user experience within the browser. After all, as simple as it is, it also has quite a few limitations - especially compared to the typical "windows" (lower case) interface that people are used to on the desktop. Still, this article at IT-Analysis seems positive ly stunned that some company has worked out a way to build a windows-like interface in the browser. They even point to a (somewhat buggy) demo shopping site, that basically shows how a company could create a shopping site that feels more like a traditional client-server application using windows and the ability to drag and drop products into a shopping cart. It's an interesting interface, but all it really does is move that traditional interface into the browser. Plenty of other companies, like Macromedia and Laszlo Systems, have been working on other interactive interfaces within the browser as well - so this specific offering doesn't seem all that new or different. Others have recreated traditional applications (such as office suites) within the browser as well - so the idea of "drag and drop" within the browser isn't really that new or exciting. Some web traditionalists have problems with many of these systems because they "break the web." There are benefits to having things like standard URLs that you can send to other people and a traditional hyperlink system. More advanced interfaces are sometimes nice, but, so far, many of them seem to cause more problems than they solve. For example, the sample shopping site above had some confusing buttons at the bottom, and once I clicked on one, the whole window closed and now the page refuses to reload. Not the most user-friendly shopping experience.

Homes and Offices, Says INSIGHT Research
12/22/2004 01:46 AM
Pervasive networks—a ubiquitous “fabric” of computing, information, entertainment, and telemetry capability tied together by high-speed wired and wireless networks—are emerging from a flurry of new communication technologies now being used in home and office networks. Though communications carriers do not offer this type of continuous communication as a service today, the piece parts are already in place. [PRWEB Dec 20, 2004]

The Boston Globe writes up the local band Jim's Big Ego because it encourages people to share the band's files. In September, they released an album under a Creative Commons license and it's been their biggest seller. In fact, Creative Commons and the band are holding a contest to find the most creative remix of their paean to mixing, "Mix Tape." One of the band members, Jim Infantino, talks about "community-based art patronage": "When you as a band act in good faith, you invite your fans to act in good faith." I love all this, but I so don't believe...

[foo] Designing shared ontologies 09/11/2004 08:25 PM
Jason Cole lead a session on how to design a tool he wants to build. He says most academic technology is aimed at teachers. How do we build tools that support learning? His wife just started grad school and wants a tool that will build a personal knowledge base. But it should work with her friends' bases. And you'd like to find others working on the same issues. That means merging disparate ontologies. What do you do about degree of belief? Ontologies are binary, but people don't think in that binary way. In search of shared-infrastructure SOA

In search of shared-infrastructure SOA 06/05/2005 11:36 PM
There's more than one kind of SOA, and the location of services vis-a-vis the firewall isn't necessarily a useful way to distinguish among them. Political taxonomy makes sharper distinctions. Motorola's central leadership was able to mandate shared infrastructure from the get-go. For the federated states of NEHEN, shared infrastructure will unfold much more slowly in a series of incremental steps.

In light of these different models, the progress of species of SOA along parallel evolutionary tracks looks like a feature rather than a bug. What matters is that both can thrive in their respective habitats. As we learned this month, both evidently can. [ InfoWorld.com]

Fans have been teased for months by LEGO, who refused to release details of set number 10131, though it was first hinted at on the back of the latest Falcon packaging. Wesley noted today it's been added to StarWarsShop.com. It's being called the TIE Collection and includes two TIE Fighters, Vader's TIE Advanced and their first shot at an expanded universe vehicle, the TIE/D fighter. It's being sold for $69.99. I'm guessing it's an exclusive shared with LEGO Direct, but have not yet confirmed this. With no new mini-figures in the set, and frankly not much new part-wise, this isn't much to get LEGO fans excited about.

Videobl0gs and the creation of shared

Videobl0gs and the creation of shared
understanding.
05/04/2004 03:13 PM

Why are videoblogs promising? So I had this idea:

Consider what happens when you are watching TV (say, the news), and you discuss this with your partner who is watching the same program.

As you discuss what you see, you are building Shared Understanding. Because we are social animals, building shared understandings is crucial to our functioning and understanding of the world. We don't just think about the world and then come up with an interpretation (although that happens as well), most of the time we discuss the world and build a shared understanding within our social circle. After all, most people don't really want to have opinions that their social circle strongly disagrees with.

TV has made building shared understanding less of an activity between equals. More of the understanding is built by the journalist/presentor/actors... When we watch people discuss something, we are also building shared understanding, but we are not participating. In this, we loose something.

Now that some of our communities are moving to the internet, building shared understanding is blossoming through the conversations held on weblogs.

However, there are few discussions about the news we see on TV. We can discuss facts (easy to list), or newspaper articles (easy to link to), but discussing what Bush said at a certain point in a video, or what happened in a video of Iraq is harder. It's hard to describe. It's very hard to link to. So it becomes hard to discuss, and little shared understanding is built by us. The big media are still in control.

When we can easily videoblog, and quote video, we may be able to create conversations about the TV we watch and thus take back some of the autonomy lost. This, for me, is a large part of the promise of videoblogging.

Junxion: Shared Internet Over Cellular

Junxion: Shared Internet Over Cellular 06/23/2004 09:11 AM

junxion.jpg imageAlthough they're still in the prototype stage, a Seattle company called Junxion is doing something potentially very useful. By plugging any number of cellular network PCMCIA cards into their 'Junxion' box, which then acts as a router over Ethernet or WiFi to any number of local machines, the company plans to capitalize on the ever-expanding data bandwidth available on modern cellular networks. So instead of scrambling to find a WiFi connection -- which is still a good option, of course, especially if it's a free node -- you can set up a mobile workplace with a decent internet connection anywhere you can get a cellular signal. You're limited to the speeds of the cellular network, of course, but between a Junxion box, which is pretty large now, but will surely get smaller, and built-in WiFi, you should be able to get wireless internet just about anywhere. And that, as they say, owns. (Thanks, Oliver!)
