Chicketecture? Chicken Chic? iCluck?

Chicketecture? Chicken Chic? iCluck? 04/14/2004 11:47 AM

You won't find any subservient chickens in these poultry housing units, which were thought by some to have been an elaborate April Fool's joke -- but were printed as the real deal in the Times of London, The Register, and elsewhere. Designed so that city-dwelling humans can add a little bokbok to their daily lives, the iMac-like eglu may just be "the world's most stylish and innovative chicken house and [a] perfect way to keep chickens as pets."
Link (Thanks, Giordano!)

UPDATE: Erin says, "A fresh-egg-lovin' pal of mine showed me the Eglu last week. It's no hoax, but it isn't designed for "city-dwellers" as such - most cities prohibit keeping poultry for health reasons, but there are a lot of little hamlets (omelettes?) in England where it would be perfect. Apparently their design was inspired by the iMac. Perhaps this heralds a new era in chicken coop fashions? :D"

Eglu and Urban Chicken Chic update

Eglu and Urban Chicken Chic update 04/15/2004 11:37 AM
Boingboing reader Shelly Rae Clift read yesterday's post on fashionable iMac-like poultry housing and says:
Not only is Chicken Keeping allowed in the fine city of Seattle but you can have up to three (as long as they are hens that is)! (And yes, hens lay eggs just fine without roosters). The City Chickens phenomenon has sparked some creative coop architecture and an annual tour of City Chicken Coops. Now I wonder how I can get an Eglu of my own...?

Wi ll RSS Readers Clog the Web?

" 'Sure, news aggregators are handy tools, making Web surfing a breeze. But the programs are greedy little buggers that swamp websites with unwanted traffic. Something has to change, and soon.' [Wired News]

This is a fascinating news article at Wired about how newsreader traffic is transforming the web and eating up bandwidth....

However, I don't think that this is a reason not to use RSS. According to the article one of the reasons that RSS newsreaders are swamping the web is the way in which they are designed. So the programs need to get better. In addition, we as web managers have to pay attention to our site traffic if we put on an RSS feed. We have to consider traffic that news aggregators place on a site if we are starting a site that uses RSS and looking for host." [Library Web Chic]

Two points in posting this: 1) I'm concerned about this issue, too, and yes I hope the smart programmers figure this one out - read the whole Wired article, and 2) how did I miss Karen Coombs starting a blog? Go check out Library Web Chic now. RSS feed here. ;-)

Dweeb is the new black, according to this LA Times article about the transformed social status of geeks from outcasts to arbiters of cool. Why the author points to exposed underwear as an example of geek-originated style, I don't know -- that's a gangbanger thing, not a code warrior thing. Now, if they'd suggested pocket protectors as future haute couture accessories, yeah -- but until there are gold-encrusted ones in the Dior fall collection, I'm not totally buying the story's premise. Fun read, though. Article Link , hidden behind a dumbass site registration system that you can bypass with bugmenot.com. (Thanks, Mara!)

B'gawk! It may sound a bit like a joke, but forget about merely watching webcams, or playing with subservient facsimilies. Join the urb an farming movement and do it for real. Martha Stewart does it, Hollywood producers make movies about it, and now even hipsters are doing it too: they're raising chickens in urban and subur ban backyards. Coops range from the eggs-spensive but low-maintenance "HenSpa" to tricked-out Home Depot sheds to faux-gingerbre ad cottages to the very cool iMac-style "eglu". Surprisingly, it's usually legal to keep chickens in most areas as long as you only keep hens and no rooster (too noisy), but even in anti-chicken cities like NYC, it goes on in secret and remains legal on public property. And you can always buy your neighbors' silence with fresh eggs. Poultry Power to the People!

Insanity Chic in Hollywood 02/10/2004 02:50 AM
Mark Ebner -- investigative journalist and contributor to the jaded, snarky, underground Hollywood rag LA Innuendo -- has a new book out on February 24. "Hollywood, Interrupted: Insanity Chic in Babylon -- The Case Against Celebrity," co-written with Andrew Breitbart (Matt Drudge's right-hand guy). Basically 416 pages of celebrities behaving badly. Read how Mike Ovitz's then six-year-old son once peed on a tree in the front yard, yelling "My mom said I could, and mom is in charge of you, I could have you fired!" to his nanny when she scolded him. There's supposed to be another section in here that chronicles some Powerful Hollywood People engaging in cybersexual harassment with a young AOL customer support agent. Link

symphony4u.jpg imageThe Symphony4U is another flash memory MP3 player (get it?), this time from Korean manufacturer Chic. In all, it's nothing terribly special, although it does have a decent battery life (25 hours on two AAAs) and sort of an interesting thumb-button right in the middle. I'm sure someone will eventually pick up the Symphony4U for Stateside distribution, but until then you can satiate yourself with one of the dozens of other flash drive options.

Ms. Jardin, Though you might be intereested in this tidbit. I got a phone call from International Communications Research (ICR) for a survey yesterday. Buried among the questions about credit counseling services, political affiliation, and consumption of coffee, tobacco, and fast food products, I got this series of questions.

"Do you have an Internet connection? Have you ever visited the website subservientchicken.com? Would you visit it again?"

These were followed up by questions about the BK Tendercrisp Sandwich and their low-carb menu. Looks like they're looking to evaluate the potency of their stealth marketing campaign.

Dixie Chicks Pulled from Air After Bashing Bush Dude, these Texas people didn't find criticism of the president unpatriotic when Bill Clinton was president. They thought it was a sacred duty...Apparently country stations in Texas and elsewhere are pulling Dixie Chicks albums because their lead singer, while on an overseas tour, criticized Bush, saying she was ashamed to be from the state as him. People who want to criticize the critics of the critical comments are supporting the Chicks by buying their albums and requesting their songs. I never thought I'd buy a Dixie Chicks album, but that's what I'm going to do tonight, and I'm paying full price!

O'Neil the Chicken

O'Neil the Chicken 01/16/2004 01:02 PM

Too bad O'Neil is backtracking on his accounts of the Bush administration.  His words matched my expectation of Bush perfectly.  When Bush got elected, I expected him to look for excuses to attack Iraq.  And I would have been surprised if he paid attention to anything other than the Bible and the picture of Saddam Hussein after he got to the White House.  Baloonfoot indeed.

I think O'Neil spoke the truth and now he is acting like a chicken.  The sad thing is that I am not surprised.  Only thing missing is Osama bin Laden announcing that he attacked America because he learned of a secret plot by Bush to invade and occupy Iraq.  Sheesh.  I'll bet Arnold the Terminator would make a much better President than Bush.

BTW, check out the 30 second ads at Bush in 30 Seconds site even if you are pro-Bush.  Ads oversimplify as usual but they are hillarious and very well done.  I am impressed.

Don't call him chicken

Don't call him chicken 07/10/2004 02:43 PM
Sunjit Kumar of Suva, Fiji, was raised by chickens. As a young boy, his grandfather locked him in a chicken coop where he lived for several years. After Kumar escaped, he was taken to an old age home where the baffled staff confined him for twenty years. Now though, Elizabeth Clayton, president of a Rotary Club in Fiji's capital city, has, er, taken Kumar under her wing.
"Sujit would mostly hop around like a chicken, peck at his food, perch like a chicken and make noises like a chicken," she said. "He would prefer to roost on the floor to go to sleep rather than sleep in a bed."
Kumar currently resides in a former factory while undergoing therapy. Video available here. More of the story here.
