Panasonic X800 Gets FCC Nod
02/05/2005 10:17 PM
Panasonic's slick new X800 Series 60 GSM
clamshell has gotten FCC approval, meaning we should expect it fairly
soon from T-Mobile or Cingular. The handset has a pretty average
feature set, with Bluetooth and a VGA camera, but it happens to be
very attractive, pulling off sort of a V3 Razr look without completely
aping its features. No pricing or availability information quite
yet.

Panasonic VDR M70 with DVD-RAM Burner
08/20/2004 08:05 AM
Panasonic's new VDR M70 is another DVD-burner
on-board digital camcorder, although in addition to DVD-R it also
supports the DVD-RAM format (in 3-inch disc varieties, of course). In
addition, the VDR M70 has an anemic 1.2-megapixel still camera, 10x
optical zoom, and a 2.5-inch LCD monitor. Altogether sort of
pedestrian, really, although it does have image stabilization, which
should be standard on almost everything these days, but surprisingly
often isn't.

Panasonic R3 Review
Panasonic R3 Review
08/03/2004 10:50 AM
One of the great things working at Gizmodo has allowed me to
do is to get my hands on a whole range of gadgetry that I probably
wouldn't have been able to play around with otherwise. Since I work
from home, each ring of the doorbell means there's probably something
new coming, so it's a little like Christmas, except when I return the
gifts nobody gets pissy. But despite the joy of opening up all the
gadgets and trying them out, most of them -- especially the laptops --
end up being disappointing, and I'm rarely too upset to send them back
to the vendor and manufacturer.
Not so with the Panasonic R3, a machine so well put-together that I
actually considered buying one for my own personal use, and if it
didn't cost twice that of my budget (importers are selling it for
around $2800 for a fully-spec'd out unit), I probably would have. What
makes the R3 the hands-down best sub-notebook I've ever used? Well,
for starters, it actually usable.

Panasonic D-Snap SV-AS30, SV-AS3
09/21/2004 10:38 AM
Panasonic has two new cameras out in their D-Snap
line, the SV-AS30 [left] and the SV-AS3. Both are thin-profile
3.2-megapixel cameras that can not only record MPEG4 video, but can
also play it back from SD cards, as well as MP3s or WMAs (maybe only
the SV-AS3 can do the music playback, I'm not positive). In addition,
the cameras have a 16:9 image mode for shooting photos that will later
be viewed on HDTV screens (1920 x 1080).
The upright form factor is probably my least favorite camera design
there is, but they do look nice an pocketable, so there's that.

Panasonic Minicompos With SD Slot
Panasonic Minicompos With SD Slot
03/19/2005 02:45 AM
Also introduced by Panasonic yesterday were the
"SC-PM910DVD" and "SC-PM710SD" minicomponent systems, both supporting
a variety of audio formats on a variety of mediums. Each has a 5-CD
changer, MD deck, cassette deck, radio tuner, and for the first time
in the world, SD card slot. Panasonic has gone to extra lengths to
make sure you take advantage of this slot as well; you can play and
record audio files from (or to) the inserted card. The units are
capable of playing MP3 and WMA files from CDs, and can play those same
formats as well as AAC from SD cards. The PM910DVD adds DVD-Video
support too, but it's not as if you'll be using such a feature outside
of Japan.

verifying agency for any third-party who wishes to have their devices

joint format being backed by Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and Philips
that is designed to replace DVDs with discs that can hold up to 50GBs

03/31/2005 08:57 AMThe ability to make an emergency call has been given as the top reason
for taking a cell phone when traveling, according to a survey by
Mobal, the international phone company. Mobal conducted the survey of
its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell

citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are

Panasonic will be
releasing a new HD video camera they're calling the "DVCPRO HD P2
handheld." While actually pretty compact judging by the image alone,
the unit doesn't skimp on the specs. It obviously records in a range
of HDTV formats (up to 1080 60i/30p/24p), but another interesting
feature is its compatibility with "P2 card." If you missed it, P2 card
is memory format employing technology from SD cards with the size and
interface to be compatible with PCMCIA. We sort of already covered
this during its announcement at NAB, but this would be the "official"
announcement.

Projectors
03/23/2005 04:53 AM
Impress Watch reports on two nice looking new projectors
from Panasonic: the TH-LB30NT and TH-LB20NT. Varying only in Lumens,
where the 30NT has 3,000 and the 20NT has 2,000, both projectors
support IEEE 802.11g connections. Equipped with a 1024 x 768 LCD, the
30NT and 20NT feature two D-sub inputs, an S-video input and a
Composite input. Because of the 802.11gness (instead of bness), video
files can be played on them too. Finally, a function called "Daylight
View" to automatically adjust brightness and such for using the
projector in bright rooms. They're a tad expensive for my tastes at
hundreds of thousands of yen, but for that matter, all projectors
are.

InfoSync World
cleans up their CeBIT coverage with a piece on Panasonic's 65" Plasma
HDTV with an infrared frame that turns it into an enormous touch
screen. Referencing Minority Report far too many times, the
reviewer tells us that Panasonic had developed some very specific
weather tracking and aerial navigation software to take advantage of
the touch capabilities. The great part is that the infrared unit is an
independent frame around the television and Panasonic also makes a 42"
and 50" model, so retrofitting your existing Plasma shouldn't be too
difficult. It's USB-powered and accurate up to 2x2 millimeters. No
word on price or availability, but a quick Google search pulled up a
German Lycos catalog page with a price of about $5,150 for the 50"
model.

The X500, Panasonic's newest fashion phone, is a
diminutive little slider available in your choice of silver, red, or
white. Nothing impressive feature-wise, (a little VGA camera with LED
"photo light" pretty much sums it up), but we're talking about
fashion here, so form over function (over a bed of
midget-plucked truffles drizzled with a sherry and honey glaze). The
camera is situated in a way that facilitates turning the phone
sideways to take pics, much like a "real" camera—kind of neat if
not a deal sealer. If what you can do is less important than how chic
you look while you're doing it, the X500 is available for nights on
the town. Retailing around $300 in the US.
