David Coursey is explaining why he's been spamming people in his addressbook as he tests out a variety of contact management solutions that spam everyone to make sure they update their info. He trashes Plaxo, and gives plenty of reasons to stay away from them - pointing out that they still haven't announced their business model, and he's not at all comfortable giving all his info to a company that hasn't indicated how they plan to make money. My problem with Plaxo is that there's no way out. I don't ever want to receive another Plaxo spam. I've received way too many - and almost all (no joke) are from people I don't know. Maybe I met them at a conference somewhere or I emailed with them once. I don't know. All I know is that these people are not people I know - and there's a good reason for that - and the last thing I want is to be receiving spam messages from them telling them they want my latest contact info. I understand the thought process in using this type of tool, but it's a short-sighted thought process. If someone wants to stay in touch with me, let them stay in touch with me - not some Outlook plugin they installed.

Yesterday I had a long talk about the search competition between Google and MSN. That competition is interesting, but so was the conversation, and what I can say about it. I was talking to a journo from a big-name mag that you see on every newsstand. He’d just been briefed by one of the search titans and wanted some insight from an independent search expert. The briefing was along the lines of “We’re gonna kill ’em dead because of X, Y, and Z” and he wanted my take on X, Y, and Z. Here’s the problem: X, Y, and Z are real interesting, and in particular it’s interesting that the vendor who’d briefed him thought they were important. But you know, I don’t think I can ethically say who the reporter was and who briefed him and what X, Y, and Z are, even though these are things that the vendor was trying to get published; because I didn’t think to ask the journo. Hmm, looks like I covered this ground once already, in August of 2003.

A rant about a ranter who gets a nother 15 minutes starting on CNBC tonight. He was fire d from Monday Night Football and his HBO show was finally canceled after the big-word, obscure reference shtick got tired. Much has been made of his post-9/11 ideological conversion, but there's a case to be made he's just showing true colors dating back to his SNL days. At least back then, this ranter says, he was willing to take on any authority figure, without fear or favor. But now he seems to be a lapdog of the power structure, a "Lenny Bruce in reverse." I still admit to a bit of warm feeling for the guy, maybe because it's still a little flattering to understand his references in this dumb-o-centric age. But he scares me a little, now.

At work today we stumbled across a situation where we needed to display a list of items in reverse order. The decision to show them in reverse is made in the presentation layer, so altering the code that generates the list in the application logic layer would add coupling between the layers that we would rather avoid. Python's reverse() function acts on a data structure in place, which we would rather avoid as well. Then we realised that Python's generators could be used to create a proxy around the sequence allowing us to cycle through it in reverse without altering the sequence itself. Here's the code:

I was going to explain how the above code works, but after several false starts I realised that explaining generators is best left to the experts.

Update: Unsurprisingly, this isn't exactly a new idea. PEP 322 covers reverse iteration, and the Python Tutorial uses it to illustrate both iterators and generators. Aah well.

AlterNet is carrying an interesting article by CMU's Richard Florida called the Creative Class War. The article details the decline of what the author terms the "creative class" in the US and how these people are now both not immigrating to the US and how US policies are resulting in a reverse brain drain of educated people fleeing the US. Among examples cited are how Peter Jackson's (LOTR) new movie facilities in New Zealand contributes to the decline of Hollywood, IT outsourcing trends, how MIT had to cancel a large AI project "because the university couldn't find enough graduate students who weren't foreigners and who could thus clear new security regulations," down to individual examples such as stem cell researcher Roger Pederson leaving California to do research in the UK because "they haven't made such a political football out of stem cells." Overall, a fascinating and thought-provoking article.
