04/28/2004 09:31 PMThere is a joy to be derived from well-executed engineering. I've
spent some time on this and other OSDN sites reviewing gadgets -- in
particular mp3 players. All of them have suffered from some form of
what maybe should be called iPod envy. Not so the Squeezebox, made by
Slim Devices, Inc. I wanted to write up my experiences with it, but
more importantly shine a spotlight on the way the company approaches
software development and uses free software to advance its bottom-line
goals of producing what many consider to be the reference
implementation for an outboard mp3 player.

Apple and
Real Networks are feuding over
access to Apple's popular
iPod music player. Real released Harmony , an
application
which
allows users to play music downloaded from
Real's online music store in, among other players, the iPod. The
iPod is designed to play music downloaded from iTunes , its popular online music
store , and especially those encoded with Apple's Advanced Audio Codec ( AAC )
standard. Apple
attacked the move, and threatened a programming reaction:
"We are stunned that RealNetworks has adopted the tactics and ethics
of a hacker Latest News about hacker to break into the iPod, and we
are investigating the implications of their actions under the DMCA
[Digital Millenium Copyright Act] and other laws. We strongly caution
Real and their customers that when we update our iPod software from
time to time, it is highly likely that Real's Harmony technology will
cease to work with current and future iPods."
Real, whose CEO had asked Apple to open the iPod to other file
formats earlier
this year ,
reiterated its request.

Xeni Jardin:
Sony confirmed yesterday that it plans to add native MP3 support to
digital music players, in a move that will likely help the products
compete more effectively with more popular competitors like Apple's
iPod. Until now, the Sony devices were designed to only play files
encoded with Sony's proprietary Atrac music file format.
The shift from reliance on its proprietary format will begin with
flash memory-based players, the electronics giant said, but plans are
still being finalized on how and when products will add MP3 support.
CNET News.com affiliate ZDNet France first reported of the change in
Sony's strategy for the European market. U.S. representatives said the
company is making similar plans here.

08/16/2004 09:49 AM
Sprint has finally gotten
the Samsung SPH-A700 up for sale - 400 bucks free and clear, or $250
with a two-year indenture. The SPH-A700 is a nice enough clamshell, if
a little too round and oddly-colored for my taste, but its main claim
to fame is its ability to work with Sprint's MobiTV offering, the
streaming video service that works over Sprint's existing Vision
platform. What I've seen of MobiTV hasn't really impressed me, but as
a service that's available everywhere, it's pretty much the only game
in town right now (AT&T Wireless's EDGE-based offerings is
likely-superior (I haven't seen it), but it's only available in two
markets at the moment).

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PMBack in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to
differe
ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were
focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted
to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this
was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed
of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed
- and many people want it more for the always on connection than the
speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study
shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US,
many
more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower
price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is
good enough for what most people want to do with their connections
now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get
that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can
currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people
would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is
cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many
subscribers as well.
