Nokia Quietly Releases RFID Reading
Cellphone
04/14/2004 09:01 AM

JOEL JOHNSON -- Nokia has developed an optional RFID reader kit for their 5140 phone, pitching it as a tool to automate certain business functions. For instance, RFID tags could be attached to certain waypoints on a security guard's route, letting the guard 'check in' by touching the phone to...

09/09/2004 09:00 AM

NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

09/23/2004 07:13 AM

headset_gps_nkoi.jpg imageAnd last but not least (if you're reading from the bottom up; otherwise, welcome to the Nokia posts!) are these two new peripherals from Nokia, a new Nokia Wireless Headset HS-11W headset with a 6 hour talk time, and this Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W that also connects to your phone or PDA via Bluetooth (the GPS may not actually be new - it seems sort of familiar - but I don't exactly recall hearing about it before). The GPS unit uses the same battery and charge plug as most Nokia phones, so you can use your existing charge to go along with it.

The headset should be out later this year, while the GPS unit isn't scheduled until Q1 2005.

Creative Quietly Launches New Zen 03/22/2005 04:45 PM

creative_newzen.jpgCreative is apparently launching a new Zen, a full-size version of the Zen Micro, with a 20GB hard drive. Other than the size and capacity increase, it appears to be exactly the same. If you like the Zen Micro—and it's a pretty decent player, for sure—then you might be excited. The playback time is a little skimpy at 11 hours, but we'll manage.

There's no talk of price or color information, but I'd be surprised if Creative, after all the SKUs they've added to stores lately with the 4/5/6GB Zen Micros, would be reticent to add another dozen or so.

Google Quietly Introduces Book Searches

Google Quietly Introduces Book Searches 12/17/2003 08:22 PM
You just can't stop Google, it seems. Last week they were adding features like the ability to track your FedEx packages, and now they've launched the beta test of their book search capabilities. While, this is clearly something of a response to Amazon's famed search inside the book feature, the end result isn't quite there. While there had been rumors that Google was looking to impleme nt a similar service, what they just (very quietly) launched is much simpler. Basically, they've just stored book flap info, and mixed it in with the regular search results (though, as the article points out, it doesn't show up that high on most searches). However, if you find one, it links to a page within Google that includes the info from the inside flap of the book, a few simple facts about the book and links to buy the book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million (they haven't even added in pricing info yet). While they don't have affiliate codes to make money off of those links, I imagine it wouldn't be difficult to add. The page does have their typical contextual Adwords advertising, though - increasing their inventory.

nokia_hs-13w_narrow.jpg imageIn all the fuss over the new Nokia fashion phones yesterday, I missed this Nokia Bluetooth Picture Headset (the HS-13w); fortunately, our pal Josh Rubin's keen eye scoped it out. The cool thing about the HS-13w is that it's meant to be worn as a locket, where you can use the built-in color display to look up and dial contacts. That way you can keep Nokia's funky 7280 (or any other Bluetooth-handset compatible Nokia) in your pocket. Pretty slick.
