Bill Gates Claims Open Source Kills Jobs

Bill Gates Claims Open Source Kills Jobs 07/12/2004 07:35 PM
In another futile attempt to sway companies away from Open Source software, Gates proclaims that Open Source software costs jobs. Understand that this is a random statement with no facts or figures to back up his claim, Mr. Gates apparently figures that we will simply take his word for it. Well let’s also consider this, Mr. Gates. There are a number of companies that are not only growing, but also turning a profit utilizing their own branded version of Open Source software. Open does not mean free, it means it is open to be reviewed, revised, and then redistributed as the developer see fit within the constraints of the GPL. Competition is a scary thing, huh, Bill? ;o)

Database vendors are joining the open
source party
12/22/2004 01:44 AM
Whether companies sell or provide their databases with fully available source code, through a new open source project, or with their very own open source license, there is definitely open source fever in the database business these days. Older, established database makers such as IBM, Sybase, and CA are releasing the code for what were previously proprietary products. But these players are coming late to the party thrown by MySQL, PostgreSQL, BerkelyDB maker Sleepycat, and Firebird. How much open source beer are these newcomers bringing to the database bash, or are they simply coming in and asking where the cups are?

05/24/2004 11:37 PM
eWeek: CA Moves with New Open-Source Licensing for Content, Database Projects. This article has some dangerous flaws. Proprietary/open source dual-licensing can be done with the GPL; just look at MySQL. (I see the Plone Foundation themselves are fighting this bad reporting.) Also, Apache is not dual-licensed and IBM could have used it just as easily if it wasn't owned by the ASF, because the Apache License is so permissive. (Also, companies that create gratuitous new open source licenses are not on the Cluetrain, but at least it's not dangerous.)

IBM is positioning Linux as a viable competitor to Windows -- and Unix -- in business accounts. But, it has been loathe to offer a similarly public endorsement of Linux or open-source software that competes with its own DB2- and WebSphere-branded database and application server, observers said. HP can use its new allies to wrest enterprise and SMB deals away from IBM with two software offerings that have huge buzz in the market. Even solution providers offering Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2 and Oracle databases say MySQL is gaining credibility even in mission-critical applications. That, despite the fact, that the commercial database costs just $400 or so per server.

If you've never seen it before, think "Oracle RAC without shared storage" and you're 95% of the way there. The core NDB engine is a new storage engine inside MySQL. It provides transactions, replication, on-line backups, crash recovery, hash and tree indexes, on-line index builds, auto-detection of a failed node and re-sync when it comes back up....
