Last fall I asked a question that I'll probably keep on asking in
various contexts:
Can
rich Internet apps be web-friendly?. In
response,
Macromedia chief software architect Kevin Lynch created an
example
showing how the state of a Flash app could be exposed on the
browser's URL-line, and thus made available for bookmarking, deep
linking, and scripted integration. There was also some
follow-up
discussion on integrating this technique with the browser's
navigation history.

A Rich Internet Application (or RIA) uses a
proprietary client instead of the web browser as the front end for a
Server Side software application program or
MiddleWar
e. The result is a desktop-quality
User
Interface and application functionality. An RIA allows the website
to provide services to visitors, but these should not be confused with
Web
Services or
Service Oriented Architectures, which provide services to
other application programs. The RIA depends on the new generation of
browser development tools like Macromedia Flash, with its
ScalableVectorGraphics?, or Microsoft's Avalon/XAML, or perhaps
Mozilla XUL (XML-based
User
Interface Language).

He's really a wonderful speaker and can explain RIAs for you.
I highly suggest everyone attend.
Ethan and Ian (of ODDport) will be there too.
And io you go - make SURE to ask the Macromedia
guy (slimeball) "hey, Flex seems a whole lot like laszlo......
where did you get the idea from."
Macromedia has to know that it's not OK to steal ideas from others
and just plain rip them off.

New standards speed up Internet
New standards speed up Internet
04/06/2005 12:33 PMThe speed with which data moves around the Internet could jump more
than 1,000 percent with the approval of a new cable standard.
According to USA Today, the industry's standard-settings unit,
CableLabs, plans to endorse this month technology that will let
operators boost speeds from 400 percent to 1,600 percent over existing
lines. Motorola and Cisco are among the companies offering alternative
methods to increase broadband speeds by linking together the bandwidth
used for four or more conventional TV channels.
The report says modems that can handle the new speeds are expected on
the market by 2008.

Are People Using Non-Browser Apps To

Are People Using Non-Browser Apps To
Access The Internet?
12/30/2003 04:06 PMNielsen/NetRatings is reporting that
more and
more people are accessing the internet via non-browser
applications. 76% of users connect via non-browser applications,
with the popular ones being instant messaging and the various media
players. I'm not sure why this is a big deal. Lots of people use
non-browser applications to reach the internet. This isn't a question
of replacing the browser, but other, non-browsing applications using
the internet as well, for other, (you guessed it) non-browsing
purposes. It really wasn't that long ago that
all internet
applications were non-browser applications. I'm actually surprised
that email applications aren't included at the top of this list. Are
that many people really using web-based email applications these days?
In the meantime, Jeremy Wagstaff is pointing out that
many of these applications are sneakily installed upon startup, so
that many users have them connecting to the internet when they don't
even know about it, making this study even less meaningful.
