Giving up on email folders

Giving up on email folders 04/13/2004 05:09 PM

Rael Dornfest says he's going to stop filing his email messages into different folders. Instead, he's going to put all the messages he wants to keep into a single folder and use his email programs search and sort functions to retrieve messages he wants to re-read. I'll be interested to see how this works for him. Li nk

Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?

Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?
01/17/2004 10:47 PM
The big discussion that I've been having with a few different people over the last few weeks is whether or not Google would get into the email business - and, if so, how? To me, it seems like an obvious extension of their technology and business model - but not everyone agrees. However, the rumors are getting louder and louder that Google is developing an email product. The question is whether they'll be offering an entire "Google Email" system, or if they're just working on a version of their AdSense offering that would work within email (generating contextual ads based on the content of the email). Some people I've spoken to about it thought that people would freak out if they thought Google was reading their email to do its contextualization magic - which could be true. The question is how many people will freak out - and will plenty of others be more than willing to welcome the Google contextualization engine into their inbox, in exchange for the ability to actually "Google your email"? Many people always seem to want the ability to better search through their own email. I could see a certain willingness from many people to let Google place ads in their email in exchange for the ability to better search through all the email. If Google could figure out a good anti-spam solution, as well, it could be a real hit.

Mount Remote Folders in Windows

Mount Remote Folders in Windows 02/10/2004 02:49 AM

How to Create and Manipulate NTFS Junction Points: This is awfully handy. It allows you to map a drive, but map it to a local folder, instead of using a drive letter. So as you traverse your directory tree, you could drop into a remote folder that appears it be local. Very Linux-ish.

You can surpass the 26 drive letter limitation by using NTFS junction points. By using junction points, you can graft a target folder onto another NTFS folder or "mount" a volume onto an NTFS junction point. Junction points are transparent to programs.

For years, SMTP server software was used to send and receive e-mail communications. These older servers, usually freeware, have created many delivery challenges. Most of the time, marketers, CEO’s and even CMO’s are completely unaware of these issues. The owners of ActivSoftware, in central New York, introduced a worldwide challenge to prove their software system (http://www.activsoftware.com/xms) is one of a kind in the email industry. New Outlook 2003 Add-ins

New Outlook 2003 Add-ins 11/02/2003 06:31 AM
Microsoft has released a couple of new add-ins for Outlook 2003:

  • Outlook 2003 Add-in: Video Email: Use a Web camera to easily send and reply with a video email to your friends and family with just two clicks on the Video Email for Outlook 2003.
  • Outlook 2003 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup: New version updated October 31, 2003. This updated version fixes an issue with the browsing functionality on Windows 98 and Windows ME. Backing up your Microsoft Outlook information is quicker and easier with the Personal Folders Backup feature. Personal Folders Backup creates backup copies of your .PST files at regular intervals, in Outlook 2000 and later versions, making it easy to keep all of your Outlook folders safely backed up. With Personal Folders Backup, you can choose which of your .PST files you wish to back up, and how often you wish to back them up. Each .PST file contains all of your Outlook folders, including the Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts. You can have a single .PST file (usually called "Internet Folders" or "Personal Folders" in your Folder List), but you might also have an additional .PST file that you use for archiving ("Archiving Folders"). Personal Folders Backup lets you back up any or all of these .PST files

I can't stand it anymore; it's time to roll back to Outlook 2000 and pray to GOD IN THE HEAVENS ABOVE that someone keeps future versions of the PIM from going straight into the crapper for anybody not connecting to an Exchange server. If you rely on POP3 or IMAP, you'll be just as disappointed with the lame UI bugs and inconsistencies that plague Microsoft's latest client. Since I’m going to keep the rest of Office 2003 alive, it’s going to be quite a trick to downgrade midstream. I’ll have to figure out a way to export my PST so that I can make the leap backwards without causing too much of a fuss. Where the hell are you when the world needs a better program, Chandler?!...

Outlook 2003 Sucks Ass. Bigtime.

Outlook 2003 Sucks Ass. Bigtime. 10/28/2003 11:09 PM
I've had it running for about a week now, and find it very difficult to give it anything beyond a "D+" as a grade. It's noticably slower than Outlook 2000, and (beyond the high-color icons) brings with it ghastly UI changes. Maybe YOU appreciate being able to view the subject line of a message from across the room, but I don't. Maybe YOU think it's wonderful to toggle certain features (lest you care to suffer the unusable alternative), but I don't. IMHO, the only saving grace of Outlook 2003 as a non-Exchange PIM is Search Folders - but that's only because I'm a NewsGator junkie. I'm severely disappointed with this release, and will not recommend it without caveats (as you will discover in one of my future CPU articles). Piss poor job on this one, Microsoft. Someone needs to develop a TweakUI to clean up your mistakes and oversights immediately, and I'll be happy to offer dozens of suggestions....
