Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?
01/17/2004 10:47 PMThe big discussion that I've been having with a few different people
over the last few weeks is whether or not Google would get into the
email business - and, if so, how? To me, it seems like an obvious
extension of their technology and business model - but not everyone
agrees. However, the rumors are getting louder and louder that
Google is developing an
email product. The question is whether they'll be offering an
entire "Google Email" system, or if they're just working on a version
of their AdSense offering that would work within email (generating
contextual ads based on the content of the email). Some people I've
spoken to about it thought that people would freak out if they thought
Google was reading their email to do its contextualization magic -
which could be true. The question is how many people will freak out -
and will plenty of others be more than willing to welcome the Google
contextualization engine into their inbox, in exchange for the ability
to actually "Google your email"? Many people always seem to want the
ability to better search through their own email. I could see a
certain willingness from many people to let Google place ads in their
email in exchange for the ability to better search through all the
email. If Google could figure out a good anti-spam solution, as well,
it could be a real hit.

Mount Remote Folders in Windows
Mount Remote Folders in Windows
02/10/2004 02:49 AMHow to Create and
Manipulate NTFS Junction Points: This is awfully handy. It allows
you to map a drive, but map it to a local folder, instead of using a
drive letter. So as you traverse your directory tree, you could drop
into a remote folder that appears it be local. Very Linux-ish.
You can surpass the 26 drive letter limitation by using
NTFS junction points. By using junction points, you can graft a target
folder onto another NTFS folder or "mount" a volume onto an NTFS
junction point. Junction points are transparent to
programs.

06/22/2005 01:51 AMFor years, SMTP server software was used to send and receive e-mail

many delivery challenges. Most of the time, marketers, CEO’s and even

Outlook 2003 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup:
New version updated October 31, 2003. This updated version
fixes an issue
with the browsing functionality on Windows 98 and Windows ME.
Backing up your
Microsoft Outlook information is quicker and easier with the
Personal Folders
Backup feature. Personal Folders Backup creates backup copies of
your .PST files
at regular intervals, in Outlook 2000 and later versions, making it
easy to keep
all of your Outlook folders safely backed up. With Personal Folders
Backup, you
can choose which of your .PST files you wish to back up, and how
often you wish
to back them up. Each .PST file contains all of your Outlook
folders, including
the Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts. You can have a single .PST file
(usually called
"Internet Folders" or "Personal Folders" in your
Folder List), but you might also
have an additional .PST file that you use for archiving
("Archiving Folders").
Personal Folders Backup lets you back up any or all of these .PST
files

Outlook 2003 Sucks Ass. Bigtime.
10/28/2003 11:09 PMI've had it running for about a week now, and find it very difficult
to give it anything beyond a "D+" as a grade. It's noticably slower
than Outlook 2000, and (beyond the high-color icons) brings with it
ghastly UI changes. Maybe YOU appreciate being able to view the
subject line of a message from across the room, but I don't. Maybe YOU
think it's wonderful to toggle certain features (lest you care to
suffer the unusable alternative), but I don't. IMHO, the only saving
grace of Outlook 2003 as a non-Exchange PIM is Search Folders - but
that's only because I'm a NewsGator junkie. I'm severely disappointed
with this release, and will not recommend it without caveats (as you
will discover in one of my future CPU articles). Piss poor job on this
one, Microsoft. Someone needs to develop a TweakUI to clean up your
mistakes and oversights immediately, and I'll be happy to offer dozens
of suggestions....
