Sharp to Produce Symbian OS Phones,
Release More Internationally
07/09/2004 11:51 AM

sharp_sh14.jpg imageSharp had some interesting things to say at its recent press event commemorating its 8th year in the cellular phone market, namely that they hope to increase worldwide sales of their handsets by adopting, at least for market of their product line, Symbian OS. Most of Sharp's current lineup use the venerable ITRON embedded OS (and will continue to). Also notable was Sharp Communication Systems' President Masafumi Matsumoto's detailing of Sharp's heavy investment back into its own product, estimating that 40 to 50 percent of Sharp's phones are constructed from components developed and produced by Sharp themselves. "If the cellular phone enterprise expands," said Matsumoto," we can also expand our other device enterprises."

All this is to say, Symbian is growing stronger each day, as a platform -- and more importantly, we might start seeing some of those hot Sharp phones released worldwide.

More Leaked Samsung Concept Phones

More Leaked Samsung Concept Phones 01/04/2005 09:01 AM

samsung_tiny.jpg imageLooks like those Samsung concepts weren't the only ones to leak out onto the web, as iDNES.cz displays what they presume to be the entire 2005 Samsung GSM phone road map. It's an attractive looking bunch of phones, with traditional clamshells complimenting rotating screens and all sorts of other interesting (if perhaps pointless) features. And as I'm always on the lookout for devices I could easily confuse with my horse tranquilizers, the Samsung "Tiny" concept caught my eye, with its seemingly tiny interface and no apparent dialing pad (a slider, maybe?).

samsung_bbop_jav.jpg imageThese two concept phones from Samsung are likely to be introduced sooner than the Thor concept, as both are slated to run Microsoft's Pocket PC 2003 SE operating system. The white slider model, code-named "B-Bop," is a tri-band GSM device with a 2-megapixel camera, music player, and built-in Wi-Fi. The clamshell concept, code-named "Javelin," is a more conventional device, with a 1-megapixel camera and fairly staid selection of features (although it has a speedy 500MHz processor). It's unknown when any of these leaked concepts will actually be released, if ever, but it should give us all a very good idea of where Samsung is going next.

AP - Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has announced the world's first mobile phone to sport a tiny hard drive. While the ability to peruse Excel files on the go is nice, and the built-in remote control function for appliances is even nicer, I think the most unique bit might be the anti-bacterial silver coating that covers both handsets. Could anti-bacterial cases be the wave of the future? I will continue to avoid bathing until we have an answer.

sgh-p777.jpg imageThere is just a teensy bit of information floating up about the Samsung SGH-P777, an EDGE-capable phone that should show up on Cingular sometime in Q1 of '05. MobileTracker has the basics, including this tiny picture we ripped off. sgh-p777.jpg imageCingular is now exclusively offering the new Samsung P777 (formerly the SGH-P777, I think) as the first in Samsung's new line of high-speed (EDGE) multimedia phones. The phone features an integrated MP3 player as well as a camcorder which allows the user to send up to 30 second video clips and to record up to one hour of video onto its 100MB of internal memory. It's a slider design with a 262k color display and includes an AIM client. The camera features a 4x digital zoom and an image brightness feature to correct bad shots. Available now through Cingular for $300 (with a two-year contract).

AAC... hmmm... it's almost as if someone out there really likes iTunes. Maybe they'll add CONNECT and WMA support eventually, but probably not.

As you can guess, this five-megapixel sidearm is not only a pocket-ready camera, but also will support MP3 playback from SD and MMC cards—sounds great to me. Details are scant at the moment, but LetsGoDigital has some inital info (and really, until someone gets a hands-on, there's not that much more you really need to know).

At first look, the two megapixel camera with expandable memory definitely looks nice, but the expandable memory is in the unusual Transflash format. This phone does have a large 320x240 LCD display and most of the standard dosh that comes along with with a nice cellie including flash, Bluetooth, not to mention a flip out keypad.
