GKrellM: Geek eye-candy, monitors, and
more
10/30/2003 11:59 PM
Bill Wilson's little "single process stack of system monitors" known as GKrellM has become so popular some refer to it (or just use it) as geek eye-candy rather than as the very nice performance monitoring tool that it is. In fact, GKrellM is so popular it may have more plugins than other projects have users. Actually, I think it's not so much that GKrellM has morphed itself into eye-candy so much as that since the very beginning it's been designed as a Swiss Army knife kind of utility.

During the past 20 years, the Hardware Group at Microsoft has studied the changing needs of its customers and responded with new technologies and innovations that have improved people's PC experiences worldwide. Whether it's the ability to more easily navigate documents using a scroll wheel to longer battery life via optical technology or a more comfortable overall experience through applied ergonomics, the work done in the labs and design studios at Microsoft has transformed the way people interact with their computers in powerful new ways.

NewsGator Offering in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 Enables Users to Read Selected Content, or Watch On-Demand Video Content

DENVER, CO - June 4, 2004 - Today, NewsGator Technologies announced that the recently launched NewsGator Media Edition is featured in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004's "Online Spotlight," an online guide created specifically for Media Center Edition PC customers that offers a central location for them to find the latest third-party services and software, such as music, movie trailers, news updates and even Karaoke.

NewsGator provides a mechanism for Media Center PC users to easily find NewsGator software and services online, without having to separately download anything from the NewsGator web site. Both text and multimedia content is supported, and information that has not already been viewed on another device can be displayed by synchronizing user subscriptions with NewsGator Online Services.

"We're excited to be included in Online Spotlight - this will dramatically increase our visibility to the many thousands of Media Center PC users," said Greg Reinacker, President & Founder of NewsGator Technologies.

NewsGator Media Center Edition is included as part of NewsGator Online Services. NewsGator Online Services includes three other content reader editions, which allow users to read content they have subscribed to from any web browser (with Web Edition), any email client (with POP Edition), and from a mobile wireless device (with Mobile Edition), which is a powerful feature for road warriors who use mobile devices to access information while on the road. The service also provides exclusive, subscriber-only content to its subscribers, as well as the ability to search for content that matches a specific keyword or URL, and return that content in a feed. NewsGator Online Services pricing starts at $5.95/month per user.

"Media Center PCs allow consumers to have faster and more efficient access to all of their favorite digital content when, where, and how they want," said Brad Brooks, Director of Marketing at Microsoft Corp. "With the NewsGator Media Center Edition, NewsGator Technologies is delivering a complementary and innovative service that will let Media Center Edition PC users easily access their customized choice of news services."

More about NewsGator Media Center Edition

This is the latest step in the "any time, any place, any device" strategy that distinguishes the NewsGator product line. NewsGator Online Services allows users to read one set of content from any device, without duplication. The combined power of NewsGator Media Center Edition and Online Services offers customers a productive and fun way to access their personalized subscriptions and information from any device, whenever they need it.

Office 2003/XP Add-in: Remove Hidden
Data Patch

Office 2003/XP Add-in: Remove Hidden
Data Patch
01/05/2004 11:39 PM
When you distribute an Office document electronically, the document might contain information that you do not want to share publicly, such as information you’ve designated as “hidden” or information that allows you to collaborate on writing and editing the document with others. The Remove Hidden Data add-in is a tool that you can use to remove personal or hidden data that might not be immediately apparent when you view the document in your Microsoft Office application. You can run the Remove Hidden Data add-in on individual files from within your Office XP or Office 2003 application. Or, you can run Remove Hidden Data on multiple files at once from the command line. In either case, to run the tool you must have the application installed in which the document was created.

Unveiling The Wireless Networking
Starter Kit, 2nd Edition

Unveiling The Wireless Networking
Starter Kit, 2nd Edition
12/02/2003 12:33 AM
The second edition of my book, The Wireless Networking Starter Kit, is out!: My co-author Adam Engst and I spent three months on this revision, which was originally planned to be a small update to the original 360-page book, but blossomed into 560 pages for the same price: $30 (or about $21 through Amazon.com). The second edition's Web site will launch soon, but the book is shipping now, and features a revised table of contents which offers nearly three dozen chapters and three appendixes, up from 10 chapters in the first edition. We now offer a separate chapter for configuring with Windows XP, Centrino, and Mac OS, and cover using cellular data, Bluetooth, and setting up a software base station. The first book was focused on Wi-Fi; the second edition keeps 802.11a, b, and g at its core, but we spread out to all the wireless topics, such as WiMax, 802.15.3a, ultrawideband, Bluetooth, and others. We even have a chapter on configuring Wireless ISP software, such as that from Boingo, Sprint PCS, and iPass. The goal of this edition was to provide even more nitty-gritty information about getting from about 20 miles per hour up to 70 on the open highway. We'll have excerpts and a downloadable table of contents and index soon. (Note that Amazon.com has the old cover and the wrong page count; that'll be updated soon.)...
