About the Emergent Democracy Worldwide session at the Digital Democracy Teach-In, the Head Lemur says,

This may be the single most important seminar of this conference. Participation in Emergent Democracy requires a computer and an internet connection. This is the bottom line. Where you can go from there is limited only by your desire and participation. While we have this group of folks in the building, let's lower the bar bills and increase the participation in emergent democracy.

Then he adds a suggestion: A computer roadshow. Interesting idea.

This is the text of an open letter that I intend to send to all nine of my MEPs. I've watched the progress of Europe's Software Patent Directive for months and years. This week, it's passed an important hurdle on its way to becoming law, and I've decided to do my bit to work against it.

Will A Bidding Process Be Applied To
Jobs?

Will A Bidding Process Be Applied To
Jobs?
09/17/2004 02:31 PM
Roland Piquepaille writes "Two U.S. hospitals, one in Ayer, Massachusetts, and another one in Chicago, have found an innovative way to deal with nursing shortage. They post shift openings and the highest hourly rate they're willing to pay. Then, the nurses bid online for these extra shifts. The lowest bidders get the shifts and are notified by e-mail. The software behind the process, named eShift and marketed by FlexEstaff, is raising eyebrows at nurses associations. Still, FlexEstaff is negotiating with 8 more hospitals. This bidding process is almost certainly a good thing for the hospitals, but is it good for the nurses? Will we soon other industries adopt auction systems? Imagine a company telling you, "Hey, you want to make some extra dollars by building this car or writing this piece of software? Name your price, and you'll make some more cash." What do you think of this bidding process? Read more before posting your comments. Techdirt carried a similar story back in Decemmber 2003, "Techdir t:Nurses Bidding On Their Work Schedule, Hourly Pay Rate. But it didn't answer my basic question: what will happen if this process is adopted by other industries?"

It's a dictionary-based approach with over 10,000 words and 180 categories. (GI has a blog.) E.g., it found a strong correlation between the optimism in the first speech given by presidential candidates and the outcome of the elections. Also, the pessimism in popular songs and newsmagazzins predicted decreased consumer optimism and economic recession. Henrik did a quick study feeding in blogs about the Eason Jordan case, using just six...
