Safire Takes A Shot At Us
Safire Takes A Shot At Us
01/07/2004 02:11 PMWilliam Safire has managed, by his current lexicographical persona, to
obscure the memory that he once sat on the right hand of Richard
Nixon. He reminded me of that earlier, less avuncular, Safire this
morning. He has an op-ed in today's New York Times that is
astonishingly smug and nasty, even for him. In it, he gloats over his
perception of a deepening division between the centrist, Clinton-esque
wing of Democratic party and what he describes as "The Dean-Internet
Party, its Bush-despising base so energized as to be frenetic, its
leader happy to be the apostle of anger, its bandwidth bandwagon
gaining momentum with each pulse of its cursing cursor." There's more
to be said about the political depths of this remark, but it's
Christmas eve, and I'm in a charitable mood. Besides, the television
vs. Internet, Industrial vs. Virtual, corporate vs. individual nature
of this election, is a subject that demands more thorough discussion
than I have time for this morning. The most grimly entertaining part
of his screed comes at its end. Safire proposes a scenario in which
Dean will falter, and, after the Democratic party has been recaptured
by the Republicrats, he will leave the party in a sulk, creating
conditions for a Bush landslide. Safire worries that a huge Bush
mandate, as opposed to his mere reelection, might be bad for the
country. Right. We can't afford to lose this one, folks. If we do,
we'll have to set our watches back 60 years. If they even let us have
watches in the camps, that is....

I'm sure when most of you buy a monitor you're thinking,
"Sure, it looks great, but can it withstand being pelted with tiny
metal plastic balls shot from a gun?" I usually just
check the "Gunfire Resistance" rating on the little placard they keep
on the shelf, but some people feel like they need to go hands on.
Those people also feel like they need to video tape the results, which
were, by the way, pretty much what you'd expect.

ViewSonic unveils world’s fastest LCDs
03/17/2005 02:47 AMFeaturing ultra-fast 4 millisecond (ms) average video response time
across the entire color scale, ViewSonic announced its Xtreme LCD
monitor lineup today.
With a response time performance up to 8 times faster, ViewSonic says
the new monitors are ideal for extreme gaming, viewing DVDs, watching
television, and even traditional computer usage—such as rapidly
scrolling content within a Web site or a document.
The 19-inch VX924 and 17-inch VX724 are the first desktop displays to
combine ViewSonic’s proprietary Dynamic Structure™ and Amplified
Impulse™ video response acceleration technologies to support rates of
up to 250 frames per second across the entire color scale.
“These Xtreme displays mark a major milestone in LCD technology,” said
Erik Willey, senior product manager, ViewSonic. “The 4ms response time
across all color scales has allowed us to create the ultimate gaming
monitors with motion video performance rivaling the best CRTs.”
The displays will be available in the second quarter of 2005 through
traditional ViewSonic resellers, distributors and mail order.

Acer's Three New Flat-Panel LCDs:
AL1732d, AL1932d, and AL2032wd
03/19/2005 02:45 AM
Acer
has announced three new monitors in their Prestige LCD flat-panel
line, the AL 1732d, the AL 1932d, and the AL 2032wd. The first two
models are fairly standard 17- and 19-inch models, with 1,280 by 1,024
pixel resolution, and a very decent 12 millisecond response time
(faster is better to prevent blurry moving images), but the 20-inch
AL2032wd could be pretty nice, with a 1,680 by 1,040 pixel widescreen
resolution and a pretty affordable price tag. All the panels have
built-in speakers, if that's your thing, too. The prices are $330,
$490, and $650, walking up the line.

The
waiting is over for the prosumer mini-DV world as Canon (finally)
releases the XL2, the follow-up to the wildly successful (some would
say ground-breaking) XL1S. With both 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios
(film-like and TV-like, respectively), variable frame rates (again, to
more closely emulate film or TV), interchangeable lens (the same as
the XL1S had, including a new 20x optical zoom lens), and more, all
wrapped around a 3 CCD system for maximum image, you know,
fantasticness.
More after the jump.
