Review: Versatile Squeezebox an
impressive music server

There is a joy to be derived from well-executed engineering. I've spent some time on this and other OSDN sites reviewing gadgets -- in particular mp3 players. All of them have suffered from some form of what maybe should be called iPod envy. Not so the Squeezebox, made by Slim Devices, Inc. I wanted to write up my experiences with it, but more importantly shine a spotlight on the way the company approaches software development and uses free software to advance its bottom-line goals of producing what many consider to be the reference implementation for an outboard mp3 player.

New features include theming support, making it possible to style the context browser with your favorite designs, and a new graphical control script for the equalizer. There are bugfixes for the GStreamer backend, which can now play Vorbis radio streams with full metadata support. The LibVisual support has been fixed, and several other improvements have been made.

AmaroK is a step up for Linux audio
players

AmaroK is a step up for Linux audio
players
03/14/2005 04:05 PM
With the release of amaroK 1.2 last month, I finally found the Linux music player I've been wanting. When I moved to Linux full-time about two years ago, the only software that I missed from Windows was a quality audio player. Linux audio players lacked features like cover downloads, smart playlists, or easy burning to CD. Even worse, with a large collection of more than 10,000 tracks, the Linux players generally locked up when I tried to load them all, or at least slowed to an unbearable crawl. AmaroK has all of the basic features of modern Windows audio players, and some features that I haven't seen in any other player.

actiontec_net_cam_54.jpgHardware Pacers has an exceptionally detailed (albeit slightly fanboy-sounding) review of Actiontec's 54Mbps Wireless Network Camera, including a full rundown of the install process and loads of screenshots. Their overall impression was that the camera worked perfectly—it was simple access from a web browser and the video stream was great, at least at the 320x240 resolution. They noticed what they termed a dramatic slowdown when bumped up to 640x480, so it effectively becomes a question of exactly how much detail you want in your voyeuristic indulgences. Regardless, it's a small, easily mounted camera with a built-in microphone and email-capable motion detector for just about $200. Not too bad a deal.
