Apple Hopes to Lower iPod Price
Apple Hopes to Lower iPod Price

So apparently during the summoning of Steve Jobs at
the "D: All Things Demonic" conference last week, gygaxian Wall Street
Journal incantor Walt Mossberg asked the fell creature about Apple's
positioning of a low-end Mac, to which Jobs, snorting fire, replied,
"We said we're going to invest in the iPod rather than a PDA and we
also said it looks a lot like a $400 computer. And for us the volume
is pretty good, so yes. But we want to make them cheaper still. I
mean, we're not happy with iPods costing $300 and $400 and we want to
keep driving the prices down on them so we're working very hard on
that."
So there you go -- all it takes is a salted pentagram and a few
natural 20s and we've summoned ourselves some cheaper iPods.

Also, someone told there's a country called 'Europe' somewhere on
an island in the Atlantic and that Apple will be launching iTunes
Music Store there tomorrow. I hear some people there don't even speak
English -- how will they know what Beyonce is singing?! What a
strange, wonderful world we live in.

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PMBack in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to
differe
ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were
focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted
to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this
was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed
of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed
- and many people want it more for the always on connection than the
speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study
shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US,
many
more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower
price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is
good enough for what most people want to do with their connections
now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get
that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can
currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people
would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is
cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many
subscribers as well.

08/31/2004 07:26 PMMacCentral - Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing,
Phil Schiller, took
a cue from his boss, CEO Steve Jobs, as he unveiled one more thing at
the
end of his keynote to kick off this week's Apple Expo in Paris: an
iMac G5 that includes the entire
system inside a 17- or 20-inch LCD screen. Continuing the all-in-one
theme
that started with the original CRT iMac, the G5 edition features a new
industrial design that does away with the hemispherical base of the
previous
generation all together. Schiller said that the new iMacs will be
available
in mid-September.
