Intel Updates Intel Xeon Multiprocessor
Platform
03/30/2005 05:19 PMIntel Corp., as expected, introduced a breed of new platform
components for multiprocessor servers. Targeted at the mid-tier
enterprise market segment, the platform consists of five new Xeon MP
processors for servers that use four or more processors, and a new
chipset.
Intel’s E8500 Uncovered
The main building block of Intel’s new server platform is E8500
chipset designed to support up to 4-way machines. The E8500 consists
of three or more chips: the north bridge (NB), the external memory
bridge (EMB) and the ICH5 I/O controller. The north bridge supports
two processor system busses, which allows two chips to share one
667MHz bus with, 10.6GB/s bandwidth, which is likely to give new
Intel-based servers an advantage over previous generations of Xeon
MP-powered systems that had to share one 400MHz processor system bus
with 6.40GB/s bandwidth between four chips.

Dual core Glenwood, Lakeport chipsets
get Intel airing
09/21/2004 06:41 AMCHIP GIANT Intel has released some details of its dual core Glenwood
and Lakeport chipset to its customers, the original equipment
manufacturers (OEM). And it has also projected a series of its own
Intel motherboards to support the processors, which are slated to
start appearing in the middle of next year. Glenwood chipsts will be
available in lead free second layer interconnect SKUs, supporting
1066/800 system buses, and up to 8GB of dual channel DDR2 667/433.
Lakeport will come in two flavours, G and P. The G denotes next
generation Intel graphics. The Lakeport P will support 1066/800/533
system buses, dual channel DDR again at 667/533, PCI Express X16 and
PCI Express X1, high def audio and will include ICH7. Intel roadmaps
show a plethora of own motherboards based on Glenwood, Lakeport P and
Lakeport G. It's projecting a total of 12 boards with different
feature sets and exotic codenames.

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PMYesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were
whini
ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting
their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize
that going to the movies is a
social experience. It's not just
about the content (though, that is important), but the overall
experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go --
even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap
DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to
entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that
story pointed to an article in China noting that
this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done.
After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made
going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience,
putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved
the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made
some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away
from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in
Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.
