Walmart sale of $30 DVD players causes
stampede
12/02/2003 01:24 AM
Ok, so $30 is a really good price for a DVD/VCR combination player, but is it worth nearly crushing another human being to death just to get one? Apparently so:A stampede of shoppers left a woman seriously hurt this morning. She was trampled by a crowd of bargain hunters at a Central Florida Walmart. 41-year-old Patricia Vanlester is at Halifax Medical Center tonight. Family members say she came to Walmart to buy an advertised DVD, but what she got was a trip to the hospital...When the store finally opened, shoppers grabbed for the item. People started fighting for the DVD player and pushed Vanlester to the ground. "I screamed and said stop don't step on her," Ellzey says. "My sister is on the ground but no one would listen." Walmart employees rushed to Vanlester. She was knocked unconscious. She was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center.Read...

Woman injured in Wal-Mart $30 DVD player
stampede might have faked it
12/05/2003 12:31 PM
You may recall our post on Monday about a Florida woman who was trampled in a mad stampede of people scrambling to buy a $30 DVD player at the local Wal-Mart. It was one of those stories that perfectly symbolized our nation's unhealthy obsession with shopping, right? Well, we might be unheathily obsessed with shopping, but there is growing evidence that the woman, who is a "frequent faller" who has managed to injure herself nine times before at various Wal-Marts around Florida, is faking it. Over the years she's also filed injury claims against six other businesses, as well. Read [Via LostRemote]...

Xeni Jardin: Hundreds of shoppers crammed into a brand-new Ikea store as it opened in Saudi Arabia, crushing three or more people to death.
A Saudi man and a Pakistani man were among those killed, officials in the port city of Jeddah said. The incident occurred after shoppers rushed into a branch of Ikea to claim a limited number of credit vouchers being offered to the public. More than 8,000 people had gathered near the store for the $150 vouchers, some of them having camped overnight. The nationality of the third person killed was not given. Sixteen people were injured.

The Emotional Costs of Fidelity
I recently came across Suburban Sex Blog, the blog of a 30-something, married with children, sexually deprived male suburban dweller who posts about the frustrations of having a wife who just doesn't want sex. After reading this entry where his wife tells him to just "get over it" after he confronts her about the complete lack of sexual contact between the two of them for months, I knew I'd found a blog that I'd be checking in on frequently. Guys blogging about their sex lives is nothing new you might think, but instead of filling their blogs with macho bragging about their conquests, there's a growing number of good blogs where married guys are opening their hearts about the insecurities, depressions and fear that goes with trying hard to make a marriage work instead of giving into the temptation of cheating.

After going through some of these issues myself while my wife was going through a period of depression I know first hand how an emotionally distant wife can wreak havoc with everything from one's self-esteem, concentration and general mental well being. These blogs put things into a perspective that many men refuse to share, and many women never even suspect.

Cisco Acquired DynamicSoft, Hoping To

Cisco Acquired DynamicSoft, Hoping To
Lead The VoIP Market
09/15/2004 01:02 PM
Cisco Systems has moved to beef up its portfolio of VoIP offerings by acquiring Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) developer dynamicsoft for about $55 million.

The acquisition, Cisco said in an announcement Monday, will strengthen its position in wireless/wireline convergence by improving its ability to offer service providers improvements in next generation VoIP applications and services. Dynamicsoft's software products will be integrated with existing Cisco products like its SIP-based BTS 10200 Softswitch, Cisco said.

"Dynamicsoft's portfolio of carrier-class infrastructure products, combined with Cisco's softswitch capabilities, will allow service providers to quickly develop and deploy highly scalable 'subscriber-aware' IP communications services using voice, video, messaging, presence, and other real-time capabilities," said Cisco's Charles Giancarlo, senior vice president and chief technology officer, in the statement.

Election Officials Hoping E-Voting
Machines With Paper Receipts Fail

Election Officials Hoping E-Voting
Machines With Paper Receipts Fail
05/27/2004 11:04 AM
You would think that the goal of an election official would be to help guarantee the most accurate election possible, promoting the benefits of democracy. However, it seems that that's not true at all. We've already talked about election officials who have decided to ignore rules requiring their electronic voting machines be more secure and others who are suing because they don't want to make their machines more secure. However, now that Nevada is going to use e-voting machines with a paper trail, many election officials are hoping the machines will fail just to say "I told you so!" Once again, they're missing the point. It is very likely that some of the machines will have bugs - and all of these election officials will start screaming about them. However, the problem with the current e-voting machines is that no one knows if there are bugs or not in how the votes are actually counted. Just because you've set up the system to not inform you if something goes wrong, it doesn't mean that everything has gone right. Shouldn't we trust a system that will at least let us double check if something has gone wrong more than one that doesn't let us check at all? Of course, the article notes that the paper trail in these Nevada elections will be useless, because it doesn't qualify as a legitimate ballot to be recounted. In other words, the only point of using e-voting with the paper trail in these elections is to see if the machines jam up, and then let election officials complain loudly about the problems with paper receipt e-voting machines.
