In sports, they call it a rebuilding year, a period when a team works on the fundamentals and prepares for the next season's championship run, doing all it can in the meantime to keep the stadium filled with fans. It might be tempting to think of Microsoft Corp.'s 2004 in those terms, sandwiched as it is between major releases of the company's biggest products. New versions of Microsoft Office and Windows Server debuted in 2003. And the next Windows for PCs, code-named Longhorn, isn't due until 2005 or 2006.

Proxim Beefs Up APs

Proxim Beefs Up APs 12/08/2003 04:46 PM
Proxim introduced today upgrades to its enterprise-grade Orinoco AP-2000 access point: Most of the new features are geared toward making it easier for network administrators to manage their wireless networks. Because the AP includes two slots for multiple radios, customers can now dedicate one radio for repeating traffic. For example, one slot can be used for an 802.11b radio that may serve customers on one end of a hotel floor. The second slot can contain an 802.11g radio, which offers a wired Ethernet link across the floor to another AP at the other end. "It's like a wired Ethernet link across the building, but you don't have to do an Ethernet drop," said Ben Gibson, director of marketing for Proxim. Because the repeating function uses a second radio, the traffic doesn't impact the bandwidth available to end users. Gibson expects the capability to appeal to managers of wharehouses or other large, open spaces where stringing Ethernet wires may prove difficult. "Essentially you're extending the cells to make a hot zone, rather than a hot spot," he said....

08/01/2004 03:30 AM
According to a recent study by Current Analysis, unit sales of notebooks equipped with a widescreen 15.4-inch display have steadily continued to climb throughout the first half of 2004. As of June 30, the widescreen market accounted for 48% of all notebooks sold, compared to only 15% in December 2003. The growth represents the highest share yet for the widescreen models since its introduction in the spring of 2003 and demonstrates widescreen systems are selling in greater numbers than its traditional square counterparts.
